Not bad save , a little theatrical perhaps but kept us in it, that Jota is class.View attachment 51858
Great save but I thought the one in the first half was better( where he collided with the post). The shot/cross was deflected, Henderson was going one way, had to re-act to go the other way and managed to palm it away seemingly from behind him

First impressions at the game were that he was partly to blame for the equaliser( i've not seen it back to might be wrong on this one)

My post agrees with yours, I'm saying you get a better connection when jumping up compared to standing, that's obvious. Just that there's often no need for the theatrics that go with it.

What I'm saying is that whilst it may look "theatrical" it's quite often a case of having to spring up and jump backwards to tip the ball over, this means you can't land on your feet and if you tried to could possibly injure yourself, so the safest thing to do is bring your legs up towards you, it may look theatrical but in my experience is more natural.

There's a lot about Internet etiquette that I don't get, as I am not a 'digital native' as the phrase goes. I have posted twice in this thread already apologising for missing the irony, and openly admitting to not being good at picking up on-line irony. So what is the point of your post? Are there further rules of netiquette that I still have to learn? Do I have to be taken outside and flogged before I can post again? And as it happens, the discussion about which hand the keeper should go with has been interesting. That's probably ironical.;)
1st rule of netiquette is Read the Fucking Thread First.

;)

I can't understand what he was thinking on the goal.

Was a fairly innocuous header from the corner and I have no idea why he felt the need to push the ball away, ultimately sending it straight back into the most dangerous area possible, when it looked like there was no pace on the ball and he could have quite easily gathered it in.

That said, I'm watching on the tele and he has a split second to make a decision.

That looked a very poor decision to me but mistakes happen.

I'm not knocking the lad, I just didn't understand his thought process on that one.

However, we win as a team and we lose as a team.

I'm not one for knocking individual players so we pick ourselves up and we move on.

Having watched it again, it looks like he was being blocked by one of their players and two of our defenders stood looking at him rather than trying to get between him and the defender.

I appreciate that there was traffic, and that maybe why he decided to push it away rather than pull it in.

I still think it looks a poor decision but he saved more than he cost us last night so I'm not going to be getting my knickers in a twist over it.

It's a bit like all the Fleck and Norwood stuff flying about.

Some people seem to forget that there's two teams trying to win out there, and the opposition will have done their homework and prepared plans to nullify our most influential players, so it's hardly surprising that they sometimes look off the pace if the opposition do their jobs well.

It's a league of fine margins and overall we're doing very well.

They've got class players because they CHEATED by spending more and giving themselves an unfair edge at this level. It's called living beyond your means and cheating, it's certainly not CLASS

Fair enough, your explanation does make sense for shots a keeper may see late and so has to jump backwards. It's just always irked me how keepers flap about like fish to give the impression it's a good save in instances where they have enough time to simply jump upwards, tip it over and land back on their feet.

I think it's also fair to say that part of the fun of being a goalkeeper is being able to throw yourself about, a shot straight at you is easy to save but every keeper wants the curling shot that they tip round the post at full stretch! Let us have our fun, or "theatrics" as you call it ;)

I won't mention my other problem with keepers doing a series of rolls on the floor then after a fingertip save, to 'add effect' I presume...

It's not very often as a United fan we've had the best player in the league in his position playing for us. This is one of those times.

The cruel irony of the footballing gods! There we sat on top of the league on Novemer 16th, 1963, and then Hodgy broke his thumb. I am still convinced that cost us the league title.
In the week following Hodgy's broken thumb, our reserve keeper, Widdowson, broke his arm at training so we re-signed Des Thompson from Buxton!

And Des Thompson had not come up to standard in his first spell. It was the first time I began to be aware of a Board, and sensed that they were not keen to put their hands in their pockets when we were on the verge of success. A proper replacement for Hodgy would not have cost the earth. I was never quite the same after Hodgy's broken thumb - I had lost my innocence.

So glad to have learned the story behind your name !

Don't think so. Diving to the top left corner, the right shoulder and arm are nearest to the ball, and the angle of the right arm makes it easier to push the ball away.

For me it's the starting and finishing position you need to think about. You are obviously going left as you start, but the left hand is going to drop away naturally with the fall of the body (gravity and all that). You will never reach the extreme top corner with the left hand. However, if you do as he did and other good keepers do naturally, you twist in mid air giving you the momentum to throw the upper body and opposite arm and hand (right in this case) upwards and further towards the ball than you would ever reach with the left which is by then dropping away.

To illustrate try standing on your left leg with your left arm in the air at around 45 degrees and move your weight left and see what happens. Your left arm and hand will drop away as your right leg comes up to counter balance. Now twist and thrust with your right arm as though doing a swimming crawl motion and hopefully you will see the effect as the right reaches out above the left and the left drops into position to brace the fall.

Swiss Blade's first photo is merely illustrative of a keeper who is able to get to the ball without any extra body movement or that he hasn't had the time do it. You also have to factor in that if you are a right handed and right footed keeper you will be stronger and feel more comfortable pushing off to the right. For pens, I used to set up standing slightly to the left in the hope of encouraging a shot to the right and then moved right during the taker's run up. If he's taken the bait he's then got to change his mind, body and foot shape pretty rapidly if he wants to do anything about it.

Always makes me laugh (infuriates me) when pundits comment on keepers.

Having tried out your instructions in paragraph 2, I am on my way to A&E, but hope to make it to the match this afternoon...
I enjoyed your analysis, but unless you are younger than I assume, your movement as the penalty taker ran up was illegal. Not that ref's ever did anything about it.

Yep. Never got pulled up though. :D
