I have been watching the games which have been on the red button and as an exile, I approve.

But does anybody have any information on the practicalities of the broadcasts? I can’t find anything online.

Ok, one camera, no replays, no co-commentator, no refinements at all.

But who was the guy on Tuesday? I read somewhere that the commentators are local, but I didn’t recognise him and he didn’t know who Basham was until late in the game. Does he watch the same feed as us from a studio? He missed Madines red card and didn’t know until Madine walked off. So he has no back up.

Any info appreciated.

As far as I can tell the cameras on the Red button are operated by people who have been on Spice all day and the commentators are on day release from the blind school.

It was run by a bloke called Curtis, whom some of you may remember from his Bladesmad days. The coverage is provided from his armchair in Ipswich, where he usually resides and for that reason, he hacks into the Lane's stand CCTV cameras on that side, hence once angle only and no replays. There's no co-commentator as he had no friends.

As for Basham, he hasn't really heard of him yet, he's still stuck on slagging off Cresswell as his scapegoat.

I always mute alerts when I am watching on Sky, for that very reason.

I've got absolutely no idea the answer to your questions, but I just want to jump in and say what a joke it was that Madine's red was missed! I need to vent so can I please talk you through my situation at that time.

Sat in a room with my partner (recent Blade sign-up), my mum (lifelong Blade, doesn't always pay 100% attention, hates nervy games) and my mum's partner (Notts County fan, likes moaning a lot). Both my mum and her partner are into their late 60's, so not especially with it.

*Madine makes bad tackle*

Me: Oh no, stupid tackle … that’s not a red is it.. no, surely just a yellow

Everyone else: Not paying attention, I think my mum started asking me about what I was doing over the Easter weekend

*Ref brandishes relatively dark-looking card, Madine looks gutted*

Me: Is that a red…?!?!

Commentator: Oh and a yellow card for Madine there

Everyone else: Mum continues to ask about Easter weekend, girlfriend looking at me for my response, mum’s partner with headphones in listening to Brexit fallout, occasionally updating about Notts County score

*Madine continues to look gutted, head in hands, a few Blades remonstrate*

Me: Has he been sent off?! Can we just stop talking a second???!! I think he’s been sent off!!

Everyone else: No, it’s just a yellow … the commentator said so. Mum continues asking about Easter plans (point of contention anyway because I’m at a wedding which I don’t have a +1 to and need to trek a long way back to join my girlfriend’s family’s gathering….late)

Me: He’s walking off the pitch!! He’s been sent off!! Why is no one getting this!!!!

Everyone else: Silent now, looking at me as if I’ve gone a bit mad

The agreement with Sky and the EFL to broadcast the midweek games on red buttion was for one camera only with no replays. The midweek games that are broadcast on ifollow (and available in the UK as not in the Saturday blackout) have four cameras and replays - the idea been to try and encourage UK viewers to purchase the ifollow coverage rather than watch on Sky red button.

Sky still have the option of showing up to two midweek games with multi-camera/replay options on their main channels.

The red button games on SkyQ are delivered via broadband (hence the delay in coverage). If you watch on an old HD box then the red button games are delivered through the dish but are SD quality and are without the delay. You can actually get the SD versions on a SkyQ box but you need to manually tune to the feed.

I had a WhatsApp from Trig Jnr (TY) who was at the game saying Madine was an idiot, so I was prepared for it when it eventually happened on Sky.

The commentator I believe was Guy Havard - he's a regular on gillette soccer special.
I learnt the hard way about the delay in a previous game so knocked off all my notifications to enjoy the game.
Unfortunately my son sent me a text saying 'well that was ridiculous, what on earth was he doing' so for the next 60 seconds I was trying to guess whether we'd conceded or had a man sent off or a fan had run on the pitch and twatted someone

Latency on broadband internet connections is generally around 10-20 milliseconds, not 1 minute. That's certainly faster than satellite (around 550 milliseconds). I worked somewhere that had satellite internet (in the sticks, no broadband) and it was awful. It was fine for downloading big files, but latency loading webpages and what not was terrible.

I'm not an expert in this area, but my guess would be that they take the feed from the satellite and then apply some form of compression on the it so it's stream-able over the net (and that the compression at the start of the stream causes the delay)?

The BBC had the same issue with the 4K red button games during the world cup. We were sat watching a game (maybe when Germany got knocked out) and, being a warm day we had the windows and back door open, we suddenly heard next-door going mental and celebrating, then we caught up 2 minutes later and realised there was a serious delay in what we were watching (and just watched the other games on the broadcast channels after that).

Red button is just the iFollow stream so that's your 1-2 minute delay, and also why sometimes the picture quality drops sub HD even though you're watching it through satellite.

I have Sky Q and it still uses the dish, it's connected to my broadband for on demand downloading and whatnot, possibly red button too, but all the broadcast stuff works when my internet doesn't so I assume that's all dish based.

The dishes for Sky Q are fancy apparently, I was talking to the bloke who installed it and they can handle a lot of bandwidth, they're hoping to start having satellite broadband through them at some point soon if they haven't already, it's been a year and a bit since he told me about it.
