No they wouldn't.

Nothing for 50 years suggests they are capable of managing that.

In 2016/17 they finished 6th with cheaper prices than United and averaged 22,641. That with the big away followings at Hillsborough throughout the season. All posts comparing crowds should be underscored with the fact Wednesday regularly have had, - and on occassion still have, - away followings of 5,000 plus. Blades are capped at 2000 ish. http://european-football-statistics.co.uk/attnclub/league/shew.htm
We should also use the huge ambition they've shown over the last three years to put both clubs crowds in perspctive."We're on our way"...

There is no recent evidence to suggest Wednesday have bigger support than us, quite the contrary.
There is no evidence that Wednesday have a better Stadium than us, quite the contrary.
In terms of recent trophies: they won the league cup at a time when it had the same value as the JPT.
Historical trophies. United won the FA Cup 4 times when it was by far the biggest thing to win in English club football. Wednesday won it thee times. This is counteracted by them winning more league championships. Since Wednesday's relegation United have more titles, promotions and more time spent at the top of the second tier. The cap doffing on this thread is ludicrous.
Until Brentford were tied up in the cup, I actually thought they'd changed their name to 'Sheffield Wednesday in 16th'!

They've won 1 poxy rumblelows cup in 85 years. They got bigger gates after WW2 as the population of sheffield moved to the new estates at parson crosars shiregreen fox hill wadsley to re house those bombed out more centrally.
The overall league record we blind them as we have been more consistent. When the owls are poor they are very poor.
In 100 years theyve won 1 derby double
It's 1958 since they last finished above us in this division. They have been relegated 3 more times than us . No owls fan under 70 has seen them be top of any division after 10 games for 70 years.
They hold the record for being out of the top league longest for a sheffield club with 19 years and counting

This century they've won nearly a third less points than we have. We are the only sheffield team to average over 30k gates since that post war boom due to population movement
Wednesday 4 title wins like ours were in 28 games seasons pre 1930. Not really relevant to the modern game

These aren't "false truths" or conveniently selected stats - just facts, plain and simple. I cannot state with any certainty that had justice been properly served at Cardiff Crown Court then we would have been promoted back to the Championship instead of the Wendies but we all know (including their fans) that it would have been the most likely outcome that season. They held on to their Championship status by the skin of their teeth, before their mega-bankrolled failed attempts to gain Prem status. The years they've been above us whilst we remained in League 1 can be ignored as far as I'm concerned.

In looking at stature in terms of a football club I would have thought that a major factor is "Asset Value" - and the stadium is obviously a very significant factor. Player valuations are not included as assets on the Balance Sheet, but nevertheless are seen as another very significant factor in any club's valuation. On both counts the Blades are way ahead.
Their fans always used to have a laugh at our expense when cricket was played at the Lane; they called it a 3-sided ground, and with some justification. However - I've always referred to the sty as a 2-sided ground (and a dangerous one at that) because access is from Leppings Lane and Penistone Road only. The ground is bound on one side by the river, and by houses on the other.
After many nightmarish exits from the Leppings Lane end, I came to the conclusion as a kid that the ground was dangerous.

Since the 1989 disaster it's been re-jigged, but it's still got problems in terms of access, and it's a decrepit structure desperately in need of renovation. It's still on a flood plain - let's not forget that either.

How anyone can consider them bigger than us is beyond me. The sheffield version of Monopoly pissed them off too didn't it?

We’re roughly the same size. It’s not a Nottingham or Bristol scenario, we’re about the same and the fluctuations tend to be less than 10% either way. It barely warrants comment, never mind 10 pages of heated argument and insults.

I’d just like to correct you,

In over 100 years they’ve done one league double

This. Exactly this.

A few stats swing their way, a few hours.

But come on, really, it's all the unquantifiable stuff that makes it great to be a Blade. The atmosphere of BDTBL, the spirit, humour and character of our supporters. The way that people with no connection to the club become life long servants.

Not sure about the maths on that website.

I don't understand why it bothers people so much.
As long as we're above them and better in (quite literally) every single fucking way, who gives a shit?
It’s not really people are bothered on your viewpoint.
They’re just giving their own more realistic view.

You’re clearly obsessed with the pigs as your posts in the past have proved.

I’m not, I don’t give a fuck.

For a city the size of ours, the fan bases, the fact football was born here our collective post war achievements are lacking.

We are better though!

Does it matter if we’re below them ?

No, doesn’t sound like it. Like a dog with a bone you can’t let it go. People have given a counter view to yours and you try to belittle them instead of backing up your viewpoint.

How old are you? Not having a go or trying your trick of belittling you, but you comebacross as a bit immature, ie. someone who throws a strop when others disagree with something they’ve said.

Got to take a little bit of an issue with that because football wasn't born in Sheffield.

Apart from the fact that, historically speaking, the gap between the clubs' achievements is minimal, some of their number make a lot of the fact that they were formed earlier, as if that makes a club "bigger".

Think Everton-Liverpool, County- Forest, Bristol Rovers-Bristol City. Who's the bigger club in each of those cases?

In fact, the reason for our formation is very similar to that of Liverpool's. Like Everton, Wednesday have become equally bitter.

I’m in my early 50’s and when I was a kid in the 70’s, my grandad often said to me it’s crazy to imagine United in the 2nd division because at that point we’d spent almost our entire history in the top flight. He said United were always seen as a natural top flight club,

Another weird but interesting fact is United have now spent 42 years in the 2nd division/ championship
And in this division we’ve had a top 10 finish on 80% of the time. No wonder, our fans expect us to have a good season, historically we’re nearly always involved in a promotion challenge in this division. (4 out of every 5 seasons).

Top ten of division two is the most exciting place to play football in England.

And no thirty seven year old Owl has had a legal pint before a premier league game.

Fuck me Grandads on t'Cross have never had a legal sup before a prem game.

Someone needs to pull up the threads of them talking up the champ as La Liga and how we'd be straight back down with Billy Sharp bagging just 4 or 5 goals a season.

If I was banned I'd do it myself.

It's funny the whole cup final thing with Rotherham. Aside from the fact they celebrated as if they'd won one, our game is their Cup final.

They might not say it outright but hoping to derail our promotion is all they have left to salvage a season. So it all comes down to one game being the one that can salvage their season. If that's not a cup final, I don't know what is.

What I find quite pathetic about them is that at least when we were the poorer neighbours, we we're plucky and had a good. Their non-football approach the last two games has been unbelievable. Like a non-league team player a higher level team and just parking the bus.
Do you know I think this sums up my thoughts quite nicely. I'm interested in the bigger/better debate. But what strikes me most is that I felt the need to try and justify our style of play under Bassett and Warnock when talking to a Wednesday fan. I know I didn't have to, but still, that was invariably what they'd comment on..
They've lost that self appropriated moral higher ground. And it's hurting big style..Theyve now only got a "bigger" argument to try and cling to.
My memories of how much I enjoyed the good times under Bassett and Warnock remain and always will... But I've never felt a more special time to be a Blade, as I do now :) UTB

True, but football only really divorced itself from rugby thanks to the Sheffield rules. It was more like rugby before we had our imput. You could argue that football wasn't football before then. There is a long list of pioneering achievements that Sheffield brought to the game on top of that. United were the first professional club in Sheffield; in many ways Wednesday followed in our footsteps more than we followed in Wednesday's. We also won the league first, and have always resided in Sheffield - unlike Wednesday

A taxi driver abroad once asked me why they called them “Wednesday” - he said it was an unusual name for a football club. I explained that it was due to them being a team of butchers who played on Wednesday’s because it was traditionally half-day closing.

At first he didn’t believe me then he saw them play us this season at Bramall Lane and realised that they are still a team of butchers who shut up shop when they play.
