Our abysmal away record

Surely more or less every club in the world has a worse record of beating the best sides in their league away from home than they do against everyone else?

How bad ours is compared to everyone else's, I have no idea.

Since Wilder took over our away record against top half teams so far is as follows.

2016-17 - LLDDDWWDDWW
2017-18 - LLLLDDLLDDW
2018-19 - LLWLLD

Total - P28 W6 D10 L12

Doesn't bode well for Friday night when you consider Villa have scored in every home match since a 0-0 draw with Millwall on 9th December 2017.
Shocking news that Nuddy, I always suspected Warnock was better.

Wilder AHHHHHT!

Not just weak though, outstandingly, remarkably and concerningly weak.

We're fucking gash.

Last season Sunderland finished bottom of the league but won more points away from home against top half teams than we did.

I would imagine the vast majority of teams don't have a brilliant record away from home against the top teams, because they're the most difficult matches. I know this place isn't famous for expert insight, but this one is particularly dumb.

To misquote James Bond, 'some men are going to score goals against us, we're going to score more first'.

Do you get more points for beating top half teams, when was that new rule introduced?

As far as the thread title is concerned, it’s selective and deliberately misleading. Our away record is the fifth best in the league, in which case all those below us must be really, really bad.

Damn, I just took the bait....

No, but, playing devil's advocate for a moment, you stop them getting points by beating them. So assuming the top half teams are your rivals, points against them are worth more.

Probably because we go to win. Alot of team will defender more than they attack and get results.

Villa have only won won of their last five home games n'all, off the back of not being able to score against a dreadful Reading side. Nothing to fear in the slightest.

Swansea have only won 10 in 30....

2 happen to be against us :-D

Lies, damned lies and statistics!

We tore Villa a new one in September and Dean Smith has drawn as many as he's won since taking over. Keep Abraham quiet and we've every chance of a good result here.

Mings has said he feels terribly bad about the whole 'boot to the fucking face' thing so I expect there'll be no retrospective punishment and he'll line-up against us on Friday.

I would argue that the above coupled with our home results and away against the other teams since Wilder took over has seen us achieve promotion from league 1 with 100 points, a credible first season in the championship, and currently we are 3rd and only 3 points of top

Call me a happy clapper, but I’m happy

Irrelevant.

In fact I’m surprised the thread starter didn’t make an unfavourable comparison to the Pigs to drive the point home.

It's an excellent return over the two and two thirds seasons so far completed.
It's also reasonable to say that our difficulties away from home at higher placed teams are likely to mean no automatic promotion.
West Brom, Birmingham, Leeds, Villa, Stoke, Porkers etc isn't likely to yield a great deal.

Alright Len. Still making those little dolls of McCabe?

When did Stoke and the pigs become higher placed teams?

It's all relative. I think Blackburn are the highest placed team we've won at and we would have to win some big away games to have any chance of the top two.
History shows we've tended to shrink at most of the bigger challenges away from home.

If that's the case our away record against in the bottom half is outstanding so we should piss all over Stoke and the pigs.

Our record against the bottom 8 is outstanding.
Our record against the 15 above not so.

I am also worried about our away form, especially because the majority of our remaining away games are against the top sides. I do however think that we play better if you attack us like Norwich did.

If you look at the Swansea/ Forest games they sat back and we just ran out of ideas then we unfortunately got hit on the break.

I think this is why Madine/ Hogan have been brought in, gives us different options in tighter games. If we have to hit it long like we did to Hanson against P'boro it can be just as effective.

I would have thought that averaging a point a game playing away to the top half teams wasn't that bad. It's the overall away record that matters isn't it?

There's a standard response used on the poker forums I frequent that goes like this: lol sample size.

You could theoretically have an 80% likelihood of winning all of those individual games and still expect to see spikes like this just because of natural variance. Simply put, the record put in the OP is utterly meaningless. At best it would be a reason to look more closely at those games but in order to draw any insight you'd have to look into far more specific factors.

Which actually amounts to 1.03 points per game, away from home against top half opposition.

That's actually not too bad and certainly not "abysmal". Well done on spelling it correctly though. Last thing you'd have wanted was to embarrass yourself on your teams football forum.
I was thinking the same. What's our home record like against the top half. Oh and when we say top half do we mean when we played them or where they finished the season. Just asking.
