Before I joined the Carrier Bag Firm full time, a small part of my job meant that I was sometimes called to advise on Work Permits for foreign football players. Because of freedom of labour movement within the EU, that meant non-EU players. Essentially, it's a mathematical formula. The basic approach is - we don't give work permits to rubbish players from countries who aren't very good.
So, to automatically qualify for a Work Permit a player had to have played a high proportion of recent internationals for a highly ranked nation.
Under Brexit, there is an argument that new signings from EU countries may have to pass this test. Rather than "has an EU passport'
And I think there is still a quota for non EU players, isn't there?
