Blimey where do these idiots keep poppping up from. From wilder not playing sharpe because he he wants to be the fans favourite to this nonsense!

I wonder if these people would be starting this shit if we hadn’t signed Madine?

You know what deal with he’s here and he’s here to stay. Some of you don’t deserve this manager!

Player recruitment strategies based on foreign nationals are clearly problematic at the moment. Players from EU countries are likely to need work permits post March 2019.

If thats going to be a hassle we might as well settle for some Brazilians.

We've signed who! Fucking hell!

#SHEFFIELDUNITEDARERACISTS

I am expecting this to be trending on twitter by the end of the week.

Points deduction for xenophobia incoming...

“They’ve got a racist in the woman’s team and their own fans say the manager and chairman don’t like foreigners. They didn’t even give Justin Haber one game”

This topic does raise a lot of questions and is a reasonable topic for discussion. Wilder is not the subject under scrutiny and why the urge to shut it down?

In today's political climate, racist and xenophobe are often conflated so that's why many people are assuming OP means both.

I don't believe Wilder is either. He wants to give homegrown players a chance and he doesn't know the foreign market that well. If he really was racist/xenophobic, would he object to the presence of the Prince? Probably. Maybe not openly, but probably. Would we have signed Clarke, McGoldrick, Blackman, Carruthers, EEL, CCV etc.? Well Leon wouldn't be getting half the starts he is, that's for sure.

Racism- genuine racism- is on the rise in football. We can't keep getting sidetracked from the issue by whether or not Wilder is such because he won't sign foreign players even though he's already stated his reasonings for such.

Kendall also sold Nathan Blake soon after taking over as manager which added to the racist rumour and I remember I first heard the rumour soon after the Blake sale.

Probably just 2+2=5 and being angry at the Blake sale.
He subbed Nathan Blake at HT in his first game and he never played for us again. Kendall denied being a racist. He said that in that 45 minutes at Ipswich, Kendall had seen Blake do things that "should never be seen on a football pitch" and he said the reason he'd resigned from Everton was because they had not sanctioned the signing of Dion Dublin.

So you think club xenophobe is an appropriate title and would the same things be said if we hadn’t signed Madine?

I'm really looking forward to seeing this Sharpe character. Anyone know what his best position is?

My memory isn't great but I'm trying to think of the last United manager who had any desire whatsoever to sign foreign players. We've had the odd one here and there but mostly either from a British club and/or English-speaking as a first language.

I think Warnock is probably the last manager we had who actively tried to bring foreign players in.

As a club we put ourselves at a major disadvantage to our competitors and we become reliant on whoever is in charge performing miracles with British players no one else wants.

It would seem to me, given several managers have all shared the same reluctance to touch European players, that this might be something that comes down from a certain chairman. Which is odd given he's not shy of pimping the club around the world.

We're never going to ever be a sustainable club at a high level unless we broaden our horizons. We also end up signing players that we'd probably rather not.

Axel Smeets, Bruno Riberio, Dries Bousatta, Wilko De Vogt, Jostein Flo, Davy Gysbrechts, Luton Shelton, Mamado Seck, Ahmed Fathi. All brilliant foreign signings that knock the skin off anything we have these days. Go back to the drawing board and find something else to be the centre of attention over. Nothing to see here.

“They’ve got a racist in the woman’s team and their own fans say the manager and chairman don’t like foreigners. They didn’t even give Justin Haber one game”

Not one fan joined in my “Heyyyyyyy Justin Haber...” chant, despite DJ Otzi topping the charts at the time. Now I know the reason.

Not the best choice of word admittedly but the text in the OP alluded to parochialism which is whole different kettle of fish and nothing to get excited about.

Madine isn’t from Yorkshire is he? Surely he’s foreign with those jeans?

Wasn't that from the whole Everton thing when they had no black players? Weren't Katchuro and Fjortoft here under Kendall?

On the other hand Ron Atkinson always had loads.

So that argument looks like a load of bollocks.

Quite like being Brexit Blades.
Though it will 'pale' after a while if we continue to fall short.
More disappointing than the lack of foreigners is the lack of local talent coming through into the first team which has been non-existent under Wilder.

“Pale”

Not like you to be funny” Len.

But Bernard Manning though....

Bloody Johnny foreigner, coming over here taking our...
Free kicks.
Corners.
Throw ins.
When will it stop?
It'll be penalties next.
Tssk!

United's approach to signing foreign players smacks of parochialism and that's putting it mildly. To suggest that we are correct in this and just about every other club around the world is wrong is absurd when you are able to target a global pool of players rather than a limited one. Especially in United's case as they are forever pleading poverty.

Had you have thought about it for longer than a minute, you would know that our lack of foreign players has nothing to do parochialism or xenophobia.

Like most of our constraints, the budget is the issue. Good foreign scouting is costly and time consuming to set up - people are already unhappy that the playing budget isn't enough, imagine how they'd feel if even more money was spent away from the team.

That's before the issue of players adapting: a new language, culture or style of football are just some of the pitfalls for potential foreign recruits to avoid. We can't afford to carry any passengers, as evidenced by the swift departures of last January's recruits.

Really. You've just explained what parochialism is.
