Wilder, not so good with transfer market?’

obviously read so much due to the Madine story, one rule of thumb is trust wilder, he knows what he’s doing! I won’t have a bad word said against him, love everything about him and how we are playing football at the minute. However after thinking about some of his signings I thought I’d rank to see how often he’s not got it right.
I think I’ve been generous with a couple.

I know it’s impossible to get every signing right, but 43% failure is not great.

Fingers crossed for the last few pieces of the jigsaw.
 



Neither James Wilson [CB], Harry Chapman, Jay O'shea or Lee Evans were anything like failures, so you can take them from the 43% for a start.

Joe Riley was injured after a couple of appearances, so hardly Wilder's fault.

Kean Bryan hasn't kicked a ball for us yet due to illness and fitness issues.

Oh and how Jake Wright hasn't got a gold star next to him is beyond me quite frankly.

If you’re bottom fishing, you gather more shit.

And a good number of those signings were quickly moved on for a profit.

I’d rate Wilder’s transfer activity, given the budget, as truly remarkable.

I’m amazed that anyone would argue otherwise.
 
Whilst players may have 'failed' for us, and yes that is a high percentage... I'm not sure what else you would expect with a shoestring budget. He is doing incredibly well given our position in the league on the budget we have.

Well in two and half year nearly a complete side nine out of that little lot regulars we are on the verge and quids in so whos complaining?
 
Could even argue the Carruthers one wasnt great. Did well to get us over the line but imo I thought he would have been signed to carry on his form in the Championship. Maybe I'm wrong on that but he never really impressed at this level but seemed to be given more of a chance at it than some of the others which would suggest he was expected to play a big part.

Although I agree he has made some excellent signings in his time here. The above list is justification for questioning certain signings, which btw is different from slagging a player off before he's pulled on a shirt. I think transfers is where the 'in Wilder we trust' argument isn't really valid if we're being honest as he's brought in a fair number that havent worked out.

What I will say though is, unlike previous managers, if it doesnt work he doesnt persist with it because its his signing, he gets rid and moves on which is quite commendable compared to some of our previous managers.
 
We're third in the league with the smallest budget in the two 12 or so, we've had one promotion with 100 points and most of the team is Wilder's and then some fan decides to give a rating to his success at 43%?! I'd say its nearer 80% and we've had some of the best business I've ever witnessed in my time supporting United.

See your point CC, but I agree with the Op’s Sentiment
There are some on the Madine threads that are simply saying ‘trust Wilder’, but upon reflection it’s not that straightforward
At the price level we shop at your going to get some duds, even Fergies millions got it wrong with the likes of Kleberson and Eric (so bad they named him twice) Djemba Djemba.
But let’s not assume, or at least be allowed to question, the success of CW signings.
Especially when you reflect on the courting he did of Leonard, Evans and Holmes- fair play for realising and moving them on, but getting it right after you got it wrong doesn’t erase the original error!
I kinda accept the young loans, Wilson could have done for us but what Abraham has done for Villa, worth a punt, but the above 3 are established players with an established CV.
Which ever way you look at it a 40% failure rate is pretty shit, just be thankful he’s a football manager and not a heart surgeon......or pilot
 
So our manager comes in while we where storming the league in division 3 . Ha right
He had watched us play under the goose man ,
Realized ,along with most Blades on here , that a virtual team had to be fucked out .
So he brings in a few duds in the 3 seasons he’s been here , which manager , apart from B the Blade on radio Sheffield who’s infallible hasnt
he realizes it pretty sharpish and moves them on .
Let’s also not forget 99% of Blades ( myself included) wanted coots and freeman gone as well
Glad he knows his players not us

James Wilson was a success. You can't expect to bring in Championship quality CB's as cover when you are in your 6th Lg1 season. Same with Chapman, Lavery, Brown and Hanson. You don't bring in players out of contract on 6 month deals to start games, they are in as cover, we had no injuries.
 
Were Harry Chapman and Joe Riley really X's - because injury affected them both (didn't we fans want both to be bought because we thought they looked good??
Also Kean Bryan hasn't even had a chance yet - at least see him first!
If those 3 are given a ✅ instead of a ❌, then your figures become

35% ❌
40% ✅
24% ⭐️

That's a 64% getting it pretty much right rate.
I'd say you wont get much better than that, especially when you aren't talking about 'money is no object' managers :)

Also, we made a profit from Lee Evans and Ryan Leonard... so i'd call that a success in my eyes, even if they weren't the right players for us.
 
Signs players like Fleck, McGoldrick, Stevens and Duffy for free and players like Clarke, O'Connell and Norwood for peanuts and you are questioning his ability in the transfer market. Seriously?

The only time hes been given decent funds and weve got Egan who is looking better and better each game.

I think its ludicrous to suggest Wilder is poor at transfers.
