No one's suggesting that Wilder and his staff don't carry out due dilligance on the ability and character of a potential target. But it's not disrespectful to suggest that they may have underestimated the fan unrest that the signing of Madine will bring.
Good point....it’s a tricky one though because history shows that football fans tend to be very fickle.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Madine scores then he’ll be cheered and if he scores at Hillsboro in the Derby he’ll become a hero to many.
If he helps us win promotion then Madine and Wilder will receive all the accolades from the fans and it’ll all be forgotten.
Also the bottom line for football clubs is the financial aspect.
Cheds appointment affected sponsorship threatening withdrawal so we had no choice but to not re-sign him (the 1st time)
But regards Madine the financial effects will likely be positive.
There won’t be sponsorship withdrawal, no downturn attendances, won’t be any mass protest.
However due to his poor form at Cardiff we will be bringing in a player (on the relative cheap) who was in fantastic form at Bolton only 12 months ago meaning he earnt a transfer fee of 6 million.
It’s ironic that the club had to deal with plenty of unpleasantness regards Ched and we could be going down a similiar route.
Suspect it will blow over pretty quicky, At least there no national media campaign or Jean Hackett pushing an agenda.
