I was stood on the kop that day. Goal side of the second pillar in as you look at it! Usual place every week! 
I was on the pitch that day. It was actually great fun and very good humoured. The last 5 mins of the game were spent with fans ringing the touchline.

What a day that was. I think the crowd is recorded as being about 24 thousand. Surely there was more than that there. Look at the Kop, it's packed & as I remember the South Stand was full with a fair few in the John St too.

A fan lost his finger after climbing over the fence. I think his wedding ring got caught in the top pf the fence which tore his finger off as he jumped down to the perimeter of the pitch. Nasty!

It wasn't me but I also caught my finger (no ring) on the top of the fence and then proceeded to bleed profusely onto the pitch.
I seem to remember a policeman letting people onto the pitch through a gate, then by the time we got down from the back of the Kop, he refused to let anyone else through and just proceeded to watch everyone climb over the fence.
P.S. Well done for calming our friend down the other night - he was wrong about Little as well ;-)

I actually saw the guy rip his finger off. He was jumping over the top of the fence, which wasn't the best manufacturing in the world and was a bit ragged at the top. The police were trying to stop fans climbing and he saw a copper coming and did a quick leap over and straight down to the other side, as he moved his hands over the top his ring caught in the top and his momentum ripped his finger clean off, you could see it still stuck on the fence. He stood looking at his wound and back up to the fence for a few seconds then went very pale and just about collapsed. I seem to recall the finger was retrieved and I'm sure I read the finger was re-attached.

LOL, I too used to stand around there, or a few yards further up with what would be today's "Ultra's"..
In fact, I still sit around where I used to stand (other than a brief wannabe flirtation with the Hoolie's in the old John Street
Funnily enough I was on the South stand that night, behind a family of Peterborough fans who were in tears at having to stand up and applaud our goals.
I am right in thinking it was a night match, aren't I?

No. It was Saturday 8th May 1982 - 3pm ko. We had actually been promoted in the week before as Peterborough lost at Hereford. Peterborough had been in the promotion race all season but had collapsed after United won 4-0 at their place on 21st April - the ended up 5th.
On 8th May, it was 0-0 at HT, but we ran riot in the 2nd half, with Edwards 2, Kenworthy (bullet header from a corner) and Morris giving us another 4-0 win.

I seem to remember that in the lead up to the match at London Road, the Peterborough manager had made some disparaging remarks about us (can't remember exactly what they were) so it was very satisfying to come away with a 4-0 win.

The majority of them were at the other side of John St, the West Terrace, in the pen next to the away fans.

I'd seperate the Ultra's (back of kop) from the hoolies (John St west) . I think the aim of the Ultra's (spotty teenager types) is / was just to create a better atmosphere. The aim of the hoolies is / was to create an intimidating atmosphere for all the wrong reasons....
Either way I spent some time in both sections, thankfully more a sad wannabe than active participant....

The away game at Peterborough which we also won 4-0 was on a Wed night, so that may account for the confusion

:lol: I was surprised to see how upset he was over the substitution so I did a blood pressure check on him! I wouldnt start Little in any game but bringing him on for the last half hour or so is wise as his experience can turn the game round and it turned out to be an inspired substitution

That wasn't so much the good old days - that 3-0 win v West Ham (played on a Tuesday afternoon on 29/2/72 - all thanks to the wonderfull policies of Mr Heath's Tory government in confronting the miners), was our only win between 27/12/71 and 1/4/72.
Good old days part 2 ..
Top of the first division ..
Thats the programme for the game v Spurs on 11/9/71. We drew that 2-2 (Dearden, Scullion), with Spurs getting a last minute equaliser. We remained top of D1 until 9/10/71.
