The club crest on their blazers resembles the present day one.

this old chestnut comes round once a year ...... Jimmy Hagan designed it (as his son will testify to) .... it was used on blazers (obviously) and I also think possibly for the SUSC (supporters club) brass enamel badges WAY before it ever made it on the shirts themselves which was what 1976?

(oh and about Micky Droy .... I did think I was wrong, and I'd like known that at least I got the colour of Chelsea's socks right and the colour of the stripe on their shorts (probably). Oh yes.

Hagan designed it for the players blazers for either post or pre season tour in the 1950s.

We first had it on our shirts from the start of 1977-78 season.

Awaiting date myself, hard unless there's written proof somewhere. One memory from the photo is the wall boards and the hangers. John St Stand dressing rooms. As a boy/teenager went on the Terrace. One maybe two turnstiles deposited into a wide and high area where as you made way to the terracing you passed between two doors either side and opposite each other. Left one was a dressing room, other hade a snooker table in it. If I was lucky one or both would be open and I'd get a glimpse of the players or if they were closed one maybe crossing from one door to the other. Most times there was no one but only yards and minutes to see them running out. On running out, have United always run out to the Kop or did they go to Bramall Lane 40's early 50's? Mental blind spot with me, but I believe training staff/sponge man(Earnest Jackson later Scodger) used to sit in Bramall Lane side dugout.

Ernest Jackson left our backroom staff in 1955 because he felt he couldnt get on with Joe Mercer.

Wow, so Jimmy Hagan basically predesigned our club badge? I really didn’t know that, what a guy, I’d loved to have seen him play.

Whose the guy in the middle? I thought it might be Gerry Summers but his hair looks too dark. Is it Billy Russell?
Yes I thought it looked like Summers but I thought he had blonde hair? He was still playing for us when I first started going in the 60’s. Surely they didn’t have highlights back then. :D

My Dad didn’t rate Summers and it sort of rubbed off on me as a kid, but Richerson was an absolute beast! As for Joe Shaw what can you say that’s not already been said. A genuinely great player for us.

Aye, I have this discussion from time to time, normally as a result of information out there that Jimmy Sirrel designed the current badge. He was manager at the time and had some input on the final design that was picked, but they were all based on the original blazer patch of Jimmy Hagan.

as something of a design historian, one thing crops up again and again - that designs are nearly always older than you thought they were.

with this in mind, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the crossed swords that Jimmy Hagan drew were actually derived from something earlier to do with SUFC. For instance wasn't there a little factory called the Cutlass Works just behind John Street near St. Mary's ... what was their logo? and I think there are crossed (straight) swords on the Cutler's Hall ... so, maybe the Master Cutler or the Guilds Coat of Arms then again, crossed swords is a very old heraldic motif.

I bet I did. By the way, are you the same Kent Blade that posts on Bladesreunted?
Hi Grayblade.

That's me and you may recall you were so helpful re computer problems, I still have all your email replies in my folder.
Have you now retired?
Still in Chesterfield?

Hope you are well

Heyup Kenty, great to here from you, I hope you and yours are keeping well mate.

Yes I’m still in Chesterfield. I’m officially retired now but I still keep my hand in helping out the elderly locals that I used to look after. I think most of them would stop using their computers if I wasn’t around for them, but I don’t do call outs. Just a bit of IT help online like I did with you or over the phone for free, it keeps the old brain active.

Because of the advanced age of the people that I stayed in contact with, for obvious reasons I’m gradually getting less and less calls for help, and so sadly I would envisage they’ll come a time it’ll stop altogether, but I suppose it’s been a good way to wind down my working career.

Anyway all the best mate and regards to your good lady.
