The first ever blades pub I went in or should I say got taken in was the Truro tavern when I was about 7 or 8 got sat in the corner with pop and crisps while my dad supped with his steelworker mates ,hooked on the blades and boozers from that day .

No one has mentioned this one yet. Used to have a couple in here before games...

When I was 17 I was doing a course at Sheffield Tech and met a guy who lived on the Manor . We got on like a house on fire right from the off , mainly because we both had the same passions - the Blades and Rock 'n Roll .

A few weeks after getting to know him , he invited me to his cousins 21st birthday party at the Manor . I got there at 7:30 and everyone was nice and friendly but around 8:15 two family members started having an argument. Within minutes the place was like a fucking Wild West saloon , with bottles and chairs flying everywhere as other family members joined in and took sides . It went on for about 20 mins. until the landlord managed to get everyone out and shut the place down.

My local pubs weren't exactly salubrious but I'd never seen anything like that - and still haven't till this day .
My sister-in-law is a singer and a Manor/Wybourn lass , so she was asked to sing on New Years Eve about 20 years ago at The Manor Hotel. It was big money and the whole of our lasses family who are well known on the Manor went so she felt safe. It was a good night until her last turn when 2 blokes started arguing at the bar ,next thing like you said it was like the Wild west ,cops came but wouldn't come in and the landlord managed to get them outside where the coppers nicked the main players who were easy to spot in ragged clothes covered in blood and snot. Turns out they were from 2 related families and it was a weekly occurrence ,they were all drinking back in the boozer the next day when she went for her money. She got a good tip and it wasn't money

Yes, the Caribbean room. Skippy, Vardy, king. Big fight New Year’s Eve, David Night came in with a huge rolled up snowball, and through it on the Poole table. Fukin lot went up outside, the end door was generally always locked. King was kicking the shit out of Dave’s brother in-law, I jumped on his back to pull him off, he shook me of like rag doll. So I crawled to the main door on abbeydale rd side, which was now locked, begging Pete, the landlord to let me in. He barred me and told me to fuck off. The police arrived, that saved me getting more punishment, whereas David proceeded to rip a road sign post out of the ground, and throw it through the windscreen of the police car. Happy days. Got to have been late 70s early 80s.
Dave Knight of Lol Knight fame ? Both were hard men.

CJs Colin Walters used to run it sadly passed away too young.
Was that Vintin's brother. If so one of them lost an eye in Brian London's club in Blackpool. Handy boxers, both Pig fans. remember them knocking about with Ted Bear, who had a few walk on parts in " L O the Summer Wine " as Tubby Johnson. Another gone far too young.

My Uncle Mick turned the Turf around ,as well the Nottingham House at Broomhill and the Mailcoach on West St ,he also had the Railway at Brightside and The Junction at Woodhouse.

Notty House! Was that when they served that legendary bowl of chile with 2 or3 slices of garlic (French) bread for about a quid?
Served by the woman (landlords wife?) wearing the “soup dragon” apron?
Used to be a regular Friday lunchtime haunt from work.

Yes, Colin was Vinnies brother. Not a bully like his brother could be. Vinnie was the one who lost an eye.

One Christmas Eve dinner time we'd all been out drinking and everywhere shut at three. Coffee in the Egyptian Room until fivish. We all arranged to meet up later and then go to the Top Rank. Colin didn't show. Turns out he had nipped into Walsh's "to use the toilet " but did so via the roof after they'd closed. Police found him asleep in the bed section.

He was a good lad. Played football as well as boxing at Croft House. Died too young.

David was murdered in the Norwich area.
Vague memories of that Lowestoft wasn't it. I can remember him and Lol and Mick Critch who also got murdered ,always keep your distance and your gob shut. Always remember the Albion one night when they were all in ,it was packed but the nervous tension was unreal.

Lol night would come in ‘the mucky duck ‘ , black swan, growling at people at the bar for drinks. Popular back then for a lot of the hard men.

Story was Beechy tried to stop him from getting in a private function in the Locarno for not wearing a tie ,so he cut Beechys tie off in the foyer . The Locarno had some reet bouncers (Kilby ,Joe, Dixey ) but they didnt get involved,Must admit he had an air of menace about him ,knowing his reputation was good enough to keep a distance.

Our footy team was based in the Devonshire when Mick and Greeta ( also from the Pheasant) had it. Got to the Sunday league cup final where we lost to penguin ,it was a great pub ,The Earl Grey used to be across the road years ago and the original Pomona just up ,then came the Jolly Buffer. Our Sunday night crawl.

Bert was out one night on Christmas Eve on a drinking session with the Sheffield CID. Ran into Lol Knight in the Indian restaurant that was in Fitzalan Square. On spotting the CID Lol whipped his jacket off ready to take them all on. Luckily he realised that he was outnumbered 10 to 1 and put it back on..... eventually.

West Street, including the Limit, was a pig stronghold throughout the mid to late 80's . I remember a crawl me and a couple of mates used to do on Saturdays after the match which consisted of Berlin's, The Dove and Rainbow, Wig and Pen, Golden Ball and then onto West Street . It could get very lively on there late on !

Anyone remember Barrow Boys ?
Don't remember West St or Limits being Pig strongholds. Used to go with lads on there most Fridays and Saturdays and only had any problems with them on a few occasions when they came mob handed, but ended up with their curlies between their legs. Loved the Barrow Boys and then The Norfolk and then off to The Big Gun and end up at The Gower.

Which pub was up from the Leadmill- on the corner? Was it the Cambridge?
It was between the Railway Station & The Lane & we use to give it some hammer. It was good boozer on match days....
Think you're talking about The Norfolk, better known as The Dodgers.

Late sra Very early BBC meeting pub Saturday 11 bells ,black Wednesday lad worked the bar

In the early-mid 80's there used to be a few pig's went in there drinking when we were at home and they were very friendly with some of the Blades . Unthinkable now .

Meanwhile a massive new student flat complex is being constructed right next door, which would probably have been enough to support the Vine on its own.

That didn't save the Sportsman!

You’ve fallen into the same trap as many in overestimating the demand for alcohol from the current student intake.

Alcohol sales amongst home students has fallen, mostly because booze and drugs don’t mix and they think they get more bang for their cash with the latter. And the bulk of international students tend to come from countries where for cultural or religious reasons, there’s no big drinking culture. Think Malaysia, Iraq, Iran, Saudi. Hence the dessert bars popping up. Even the Chinese would rather spend their cash in casinos.

You're certainly right that demand for alcohol has gone down, but I think for home students it's more down to them living more 'cleanly' in general, and also the fact that they socialise less (offline at least). In terms of international students there has been an increase in students from non-drinking countries but the majority of international students are still East Asian and they do drink out there - it just seems that people aren't that keen on the British pub culture.

West Street was most definitely pig territory in the mid 80's mate . For the remainder of the 80's though Blades used to go up there virtually every weekend pig hunting . By the turn of the decade being a pig up there was hazardous to their health. Throughout the 90's the Blades basically took the piss up there even though our oinking friends still claimed West Street was ' theirs ' .

The Knight family lived at top of Thornborough Road, just below Brian (the Blade) Thackeray. I lived just round corner on Myrtle.
Lol was very much part of my growing up and many a time he'd come past our house with his mam's poodle calling for his morning paper. Hungover, black eye, cuts and bruises, growling, with a poodle....
morning lol! "Urgggh" came the reply usually....
One of his favourite ploys was going in Midhill Club on East Bank Rd, scutching the cockleseller, nicking his basket and distributing shellfish to all us kids hanging about on Myrtle Rd.
Coppers then arrived asking us if we'd seen lol.....No officer, not seen him. Would you like a cockle constable?
Lots of Lol Knight stories, a character.

I have never met Mick. He got on well with Richard Stacey who was the bouncer at Locarno, Josephines and other nightclubs. On the day after Mick's death, Richard came round my house to tell me what had happened. Mick came home with a friend of his after having been to an all night party. He got into an argument with his girlfriend who then picked up a Bowie knife that belonged to Mick and stabbed him in the chest which was enough to kill him. Some months later I was in Richard's car in the city centre, he parked his car in Commercial Street as he wanted to have a word with someone in the cafe. To his surprise, Mick's girlfriend was working in the cafe and she did her best to ignore him. I could see them from Richard's car and it was an awkward moment.

I have known Alan Kilby for a long time and I get on well with his two daughters (all three are in my FB friends list). I have met Joe quite a few times.

The Indus. Next to the Classic cinema.

My favourite pre and post match pub was the sportsman on denby street. I traveled to a few away games on their coach.
It was a lovely boozer with quality ale.

Was Richard Stacey the big set guy with blonde curly hair and a red face. If its the guy Im thinking of he was a great bloke ,actually got on with all the bouncers there Kilby ,Dixey ex Belfast bad boy ,big Joe who followed Beechy everywhere ,had some real experiences and glad they were on our side. Also knew and worked with quite a few from the Limit , Gary green ,Channer ,the Macleans ,Alex was a good friend ,lived on Park Hill flats and drove a yellow Rolls Royce that never got touched even parked at the flats. Trinny was a piece of work when he got heated. the only one I never liked was Cliff Andrews ,pig though. As for West St and Limit being pig territory ,not sure about that ,maybe down to the Beehive but as soon as they got to the Mailcoach that was it.

The scaredest I've ever been in my life is when I had a night out and my boss from work. He was with his pal Lol who at first seemed good fun. We went to some nightclub in Chesterfield. About midnight my boss gave me his car keys and got a taxis home, telling me to make sure Lol got back home. When Lol discovered Bruce missing he went apeshit saying Bruce had pulled and fucked off with some woman. The journey back to Lols house off Myrtle Rd was scarey, with him threatening me for lying, but not half as scary as him not let me leave the house to supposedly pick up Bruce. He finallyfell asleep about 4am. As Lol had taken the car keys off me, I ran almost all the way home to Lowedges. When I saw Bruce on Monday morning I was expecting to get a bollocking for leaving his car,he just laughed saying Lol Kinght can be a bit difficult at times. Fucking difficult????? I'm seventy and I still have nightmares about it
