John Flynn, £5000 from Barrow, played over 200 games. Think Jake Wright, but signed at a younger age.

That's a good one - I have him in my all time Blades Xl playing alongside Joe in a back four .

What a combination that would have been . At least 60 % of the goals we conceded last year simply would not have happened .

Moore 700K
Stevens Free
O'Connell 500k
Basham Free
Stearman 900k
Freeman Free
Fleck Free
Norwood 2m
Duffy Free
Sharp Free
McGoldrick Free

I thought we paid a fee for Sharp (about 500k) but couldn't find reference to it maybe we just took on his wages.
I've excluded Egan for now as he screws up the funniness of our 'penny team' whacking those who've paid a lot more. (Fans of local clubs feel free to get angry now.)

Billy was £500k but you can offset that by including Henderson in goal, free (for now at any rate).

Why has no one mentioned the legendary Alan Hodgkinson, not sure how we acquired him but one of the best and way better goalie than Alan Kelly

There are very few things on this forum that boil my piss more than the ' Hagan was much better than Currie ' and
'Hodgy was much better than Kelly ' fucking nonsense.

In my many years watching the Blades , it is sadly true that we have had very few truly outstanding players in any position but , when we have , some people can't be happy celebrating the fact but would rather spend their time denigrating one of them at the expense of the other .

For the record , I had the pleasure of watching these two great goalkeepers throughout their entire careers with us and , whilst one was marginally better at certain things than the other and vice versa , they were both truly wonderful goalkeepers and I'm happy with that .

I simply don't understand why anyone else would not be .

Steve Kabba for 250k was a stroke. Could’ve had a PL career, better player than Andre Gray. Probably not as good as Wilson at Bournemouth.

Yep, Gil Reece £10k. And don't forget his deputy Bill Punton for another £10k when he bust his leg.
Surely years between Punton and Reece?
Punt on was same time as Kettlebrough and Allchurch.
Probably retired before Reece arrived (or maybe that's my memory :(

I think you’re right. I remember watching Gil Reece in the 70’s but Bill Punton was before that surely? I never saw him but I’ve heard good things about his bald head.

My error!
According to wiki he was with us for 16 games in 1967 at same time as Reece :( who was with us from 65 - 73.
Neve really did anything as far as I could see but he was bald.
My dad used to call him 'Mary Ellen' but I don't think it was a compliment.

He may have been our first transgender footballer then?

Never really did anything! Only scored the winner against the unclean.

That's good enough! He was bought in as a temporary replacement until Reece recovered, that's all. This was in the days before squads, remember, and was the equivalent of an emergency loan these days. He was never bought in with any long-term intentions.

I don't know how much we paid for Ndlovu, but I reckon he's our best bargain buy - Because whatever we paid, it should have been more!

Mel Rees. £25,000.

Remember he played against Liverpool (might have been his debut?) and was excellent. We won 2-0 at home and Brian Deane scored by taking the ball off Bruce Grobellar who was dribbling it out, about 35 yards from goal and smashing it into an empty net. I met some Liverpool supporters after the game. They were really pissed off with Bruce and said what a great keeper we had. When I told them he cost £25k they thought I meant £250,000! Couldn't believe it. What a sad thing he played so few matches for us.

Cheers Snooty, that explains my inability to link Punton and Reece.
It must have been about then that I first started going down t'Lane with my dad.
Back then I probably wasn't too aware about who had injuries.

You should have nailed that one. They were both left wing......

;)

Yes, knew that - that's why I thought they were at different times in Blades history :(

But I owe further apologies to Bill Punton!

Had a flash of remembrance whilst drinking my cuppa 'Mary Ellen' was nothing to do with Bill, but instead was used for Ron Simpson who was with us from 1958 - 65
I963 - 65 fits better with my personal time-line

JoC for 400k ish has got to be up there when we’ll probably get 10 mil plus for him one day.
