Not up there in terms of club legend status or anything but Donaldson has to be a good shout recently.

For roughly the price of nice car, he came in and got 5 league goals.

Some teams would pay 6 figures for 5 league goals, and when you look at the records of the "marquee" strikers we were looking at who wanted weekly not much more than than the fee we paid for the Don, makes him seem even more of a bargain.

I don't know how much we paid for Ndlovu, but I reckon he's our best bargain buy - Because whatever we paid, it should have been more!

Technically free mate as part of the Woodhouse deal to Brum.... However no doubt it would have been factored into the fee

That’s about 50million in today’s money though!! Haha
According to an RPI calculator, as a rough guide the £26,500 fee we paid for Currie in 1968 would be around £411,000 in 2015, so let's say about £500,000 today.

For the benefit of any financial experts, this is only based on RPI rates.

Jaysus!!... way to ruin the fun with your RPI calculator!

You could also say that a top notch player in those days costs about £100k. Now its about £100m. So therefore it's £26.5m for TC. Still a fucking bargain.

There are very few things on this forum that boil my piss more than the ' Hagan was much better than Currie ' and
'Hodgy was much better than Kelly ' fucking nonsense.

In my many years watching the Blades , it is sadly true that we have had very few truly outstanding players in any position but , when we have , some people can't be happy celebrating the fact but would rather spend their time denigrating one of them at the expense of the other .

For the record , I had the pleasure of watching these two great goalkeepers throughout their entire careers with us and , whilst one was marginally better at certain things than the other and vice versa , they were both truly wonderful goalkeepers and I'm happy with that .

I simply don't understand why anyone else would not be .
Quite right. But I still think Joe Shaw was better than Collins...

Aside from the obvious ones a big nod should go to Jock Bryson. A consistent scorer and maker of many goals during the promotion seasons and still managed to be integral to us staying in the top flight. Previous experience being a part time farmer and part time footballer.

I don’t think the stats were kept then but I’d love to know how many goals he was involved in. Certainly the first few games in the third division, when we really needed a good start, he was on fire.

John Flynn, £5000 from Barrow, played over 200 games. Think Jake Wright, but signed at a younger age.

Was before my time mr flynn, ended up playing cicket with him for woodsetts for a couple of seasons, only a few years after did i even find out he had played for the blades, shows the character of the man, that even though he knew i was a blade, not once in those 2 seasons did he feel the need to tell me he had played for us, really lovely down to earth fella

Cheers for that. Good to find out that someone turns out to be as nice in 'real life' as he seemed on the pitch. I don't remember a single tantrum or misdemeanour from him, and he was playing against some tough strikers. You will probably have seen that Silent Blade corrected my post - he signed from Workington.

Big spendy club, huh?

Didn't we get Carl Asaba for £92k, as well.

Yes, Asaba would have been much better if we'd paid £5m for him.

I'm a bit surprised the Desso hasn't popped up in this thread.

Well, £5m would have been our record signing. Good spot.

How much did the Desso cost again?
