What with Norwood looking like an absolute steal, who else has been an absolute bargain for us? Free transfers have a bit of a different dynamic about them so I'll not include them here. I'm not sure we'll ever spend a better £30k than Brian Deane, one of a fair number from the wand of Dave Bassett, but who else springs to mind for a fee paying transfer? Answers on a postcard and lets see if we can land on a 1st XI.

Marcus Bent - the first time
Nathan Blake
Doug Hodgson
Chris Morgan
Sean Murphy

Incredible as it seems, Fleck, Duffy and Bash were all free!

Don't know what the fees for Coutts and Freeman were but obviously quite small so great signings........ eventually!

Billy Dearden £10,000 from Chester
Eddie Colquhoun about £20,000 from Shrewsbury (and Hemsley).
Gil Reece £10,000?
Keith Edwards circa £100,000 from Hull.
Glenn Cockerill £100,000 Lincoln

Yep, Gil Reece £10k. And don't forget his deputy Bill Punton for another £10k when he bust his leg.

Not so fast! Brian Deane cost us around £40k (although Wikipedia says £25k) from Donny. 83 goals in 198 apps. (including the first-ever PL goal) later, we sold him to Leeds for £2.9m. After just 32 goals in 138 apps. at the Dirties, we bought him back for £1.5m. Eleven goals in 24 apps. later, we sold him to Graham Souness' Benfica for £1m (I think on the fateful day we also sold Jan Åge Fjørtoft?). Brian was capped 3 times for England, while the worst-ever player to don an England shirt - Carlton Palmer - got 18 caps - one more than the majestic Tony Currie.
