Any reason he wasn't in Tuesday's squad v Hull?
Could he be one of those Wilder signings that never get's a look in?

In one of Wilder's recent interviews he says he's not yet up to speed as not had proper pre season.

I don't get this. He is a footballer who hasn't played much why wouldn't you be superfit and ready to go. I know players need games but surely you if you haven't played that much you wouldn't need a break at the end of the season. I'm thinking this is one of Wilders weird signings and he will be going out on loan to York City in the JTW.

Yeah just scrap the preseason games for all players in that respect then they should be fit enough....

Professional footballers have to have a certain standard of fitness,he will have had tests to see where he's at obviously not fit enough. You are quick to jump on Wilder back why ?
He maybe only young but levels of fitness are paramount if a player is not to break down with over us in early season.
Science is now big in sport managers have to listen to the medics (at least the good ones do ,don't you think Wilder is a good one ?)
He will join the squad when up to speed,Wilder not brought him in to throw on the scrap heap ,he is highly rated just needs that bit of extra fitness I would think he will be chasing a first team shirt from then on.

It's amazing how often the ones that quickly slate the manager or certain decisions are shown to have a massive lack of knowledge in how football really works.

I don't need to state what others have already said about match fitness, what I will say is that he came from a team who had no plans for him so he's not going to be a priority when it comes to making sure he's match fit.

But surely this is basics, just think about for a few minutes before having a pop.

What is this heresy?

No place on here for 'thinking about things'. The best approach is ALWAYS to wade in with the size 10s, then sheepishly ignore the threads you realise you've made a tit of yourself on.

Only in S2.....

I get all this, that he’s not up to speed but why couldn’t he have started getting up to speed in the league cup game on Tuesday, playing the first half or first hour? Or even coming on for the last half hour? He could’ve easily been on the bench instead of someone else on Tuesday at a minimum for one of those players with illness. Maybe that’s what Wilder wasn’t happy about?

Maybe he had the Monty Zoomers

Agree with that, though that being said plenty of footballers in preseason do come to arrangements of simply training with another team in preseason in order to maintain fitness. We’ve done that in the past for players we’ve had no intention of signing.

Still, if he’s not recovering from injury it shouldn’t take too long for him to get up to speed you’d hope.

As I was saying 1970firstmatch one comment that somebody doesn't like and we go around the table with insults.
Welcome to S24!

Or the ones who have a pop, get accused of having a lack of knowledge of football then a few months down the line end up being proved right.

Only on S24

Oh and the op was right. Any footballer signed by a club should be ready to play whether that be from the bench or in less important matches.
That is professional football!

As far as I am aware, he had basically a full season of L1 football last season with Oldham, he then returned to citeh to play with the u23’s. PG might not have had any 1st team plans for him this season, but it’s not as if he has been left to his own devices for three months, eating kebabs and drinking dark fruits. I don’t possess a massive amount of knowledge, but I seriously doubt, having seen the scale & cost of citeh’s training complex, that they run their u23’s like a Sunday imperial side.

I appreciate the importance of match fitness etc, but I do think Wilder and Knill put too much emphasis on the old 'full pre season'.

Surely he could have played 20 minutes against Hull, but he wasn't even on the bench - despite being on the bench at Boro.

I don't think it's the responsibility of his club, whatever plans they had for him, to make sure he's fit. It's down to him. And I do struggle to accept this notion that Sheffield United FC have some super-duper kind of pre-season fitness programme that is superior to other clubs, and therefore they aren't fit unless they've had our pre-season. I'm afraid this is being over-used by some and it comes over poorly as an excuse. It was used last season to explain the poor performances of other players - and I'm sorry - it just doesn't make sense. Yes, a player can come to us and not be quite at the fitness levels we'd like - but a "full pre season" is a period of about 6 weeks - so within 6 weeks, if the club feel a player needs extra focus on fitness - they could be put through the same regime and be ready.

I think what's more plausible is that the new player needs time to bed into the club, to learn the system he is going to play in and what is expected of him, and to develop an understanding with other players that he'll be playing alongside. I'm happy to trust the manager's judgement on that.

Yep, bloody know-nowts.

Surely he could have played 20 minutes against Preston,

Good point any injury would help toughen the lad up too.

Not sure the FL would have been happy about us loaning him to Morecambe though, for just 20 minutes.

Well done smart arse, but I edited it to Hull.

Can you tell me how he was on the bench against Boro then, if he wasn't capable of stepping foot on the pitch?

Good job he didn't come on that night by the sounds of it, it would've probably killed him, at least.

He was meant to sign for Rangers before us but it never went through,

The fans weren’t happy as they thought Gerrard hadn’t been backed financially but a good friend of mine that’s cousin players for Rangers said he failed his medical due to his knee.
Or he pretended to have a poorly knee as he heard the mighty blades came knocking !!

Either way, that’s what I’ve been told

Well this smart arse can rest easy knowing that some server in the Montana mountains will store the quoted 'wrong' version for ever and a day.

No idea why he was on the bench.
Perhaps to give him some 'big game atmosphere'?
