Outgoing? Jack O'Connell

Contingency planning is absolutely key to football management. We have an impending problem with Clarke, Sharp and Duffy due to their ages and likely drop in output over the next few years.I believe this is something we are hoping to negotiate partly during this transfer window. It's the same with our most saleable assets and injured players; we need to have specific transfer targets or people waiting in the wings. The Coutts injury was more keenly felt because we didn't have a contingency, until we purchased one in January.
Our academy is set up in order that the players have the same style of play and tatics as the first team, in order to help with this planning when a good un breaks through. Again contingency planning.I like the way we operate now.You can see evidence of structure and planning which we haven't had for ages. We started from an astonishingly low base though, which is why we haven't covered every eventuality.

Absolutely correct and a testament to how far CW and his team have taken us in just two years. Chris will go down as an absolute legend for what he's achieved - and has yet to achieve - so far - not just the upturn in our on-field performances, but the way he's totally turned the club around. Part of that is that we'll end up selling players who Chris has rescued from the junk-heap but that's how life works. Wilder himself will have been noticed by bigger clubs. Enjoy it while we can.

Here are the facts:

The people that are saying they'd sell, have no replacement in mind. Poor planning.

Wilder won't sell, because he knows his value to this squad and he's in the top 3/4 for importance and the youngest of them all too.

Some people aren't half getting their knickers in a twist about JOC.

There's probably half a dozen clubs in the world that can realistically hang onto players.

JOC will go if Brighton meet our valuation - and for sure CW is a realist where agents and players are concerned.

Does ANYONE know if there is a buyout figure in JOC's contract? The situation might be out of CW's hands - no one actually knows.

At this late stage in the pre-season it will be a big disappointment if he goes, but what would make me more disappointed is if the club management hasn't planned for situations like this and have players lined up for all our most important positions.

It was quite obvious at the end of last season that we have 3 players that held significant value to teams in the Premier league - Brooks, JOC and Fleck.

Shit happens FFS - players move on............lets guess at wages of £5K at United, £30K at Brighton - it's a no brainer just like Brooks if the valuation is met.

I think what you are forgetting is the money. £8m is alot of money, double our transfer record price for a decent CB there are many about I'm sure
And what do we do with that £8mil? Try and find a replacement who might flop and ruin the balance in our team we've worked so hard to build. What's the point?

Whilst one was ever present and crucial to our style of play, the other (when fit), only started 1 in 4 and contributed positively in a couple of those.

No comparison, I wasn't bothered Brooks going, I would be bothered seeing JOC leave.

I think we all would - the point is, can we actually stop him if there is a figure in his contract that is met by Brighton.

I don't know if there is, but If I had an agent i'd want one inserting.

For all the bluster on here...........does anyone know if there is a buyout clause?

I'd guess nobody does.

Wasn't picking you apart on the clause mate, it happened with Jags. We'd have no choice, but if I were Wilder, I'd be wanting to (if demanded) insert market rates for clauses. It's gone mental.

My argument is on 8m, I don't think it's worthwhile accepting. Not at this stage of the window. Christ we've been after strikers for 2 months and still don't have one.

For a start, he's going nowhere and everyone is getting their knickers in a twist about something a groundsman (a groundsman ffs) has apparently said. People have assumed from that we're signing a centre half from Man City for £2.5mil due to that very vague description.

JO'C isn't easily replaceable and you definitely don't get the finished article for the £8mil.
Remember when we replaced Harry with Harrison McGahey?

Keep the money until it's crazy money. Play the market. Do not accept anything below 8 figures.

Didn't this story originate on HITC? Bastion of genuine transfer news, the day after Wilder let slip £5m was rejected. I have doubts any increased offer has been made.

Don't have a problem with your comments - it's a forum after all and there's nothing wrong with healthy debate in what is an emotive subject about decent players leaving.

Someone quoted earlier that Swansea sold Mawson for £15m, so by the transfer market as it is, JOC is worth less - realistically between 9 and 12 at a guess.

Was looking forward to Bash/Egan and JOC playing together - it just might have to be a kid from Man City ! Last one we got was pretty decent :)

but that's the problem - our fans are speculating and thinking the worst as no one actually knows.

Brighton along with 8 or 9 others will be in the mix all season for one of the 3 relegation spots - they need players like all teams. Chasing this kid from Reading may be their no:1 target and JOC is the backstop.

Reckon the market is going to go even more bonkers right up to the 8th August with some championship players.

We will just have to be patient ;)

UTB.

So Reading can hold of Moore even though he has handed in a transfer request and we will sell JOC even though hes happy and settled? I dont think so.

Give the lad a new contract putting him on par with highest earner at the club

BRIGHTON WANT O'CONNELL

Brighton are interested in Sheffield United defender Jack O’Connell, Sky Sports News has learned, and are prepared to pay £6m for him, as the Premier League club’s pursuit of Liam Moore has stalled.

We told you earlier this week that Moore had handed in a transfer request to try to force through his move to Brighton, but Reading are at this stage holding firm.

Chris Hughton wants a centre-back to add to his defensive options, and has now turned to O’Connell, who was a key player for Sheffield Utd last season, appearing in all 46 Championship matches.

FUCK SAKE - if we sell O'connell and sign that unproven defender from City I'll be a little worried

Never easy to gauge, he's had one season in the prem (and they were relegated).

You could also look at the likes of Fabian Scharr, the swiss full back who's just been bought for 3m. Shaquiri, 13m etc.

Wonder how much they were offering Reading for them to stick 15m on his head? I'd imagine more than 6m they're offering for Jack.

6m!

I guess it's a testament to how we've come on as a club, 12m Brooks, 6m Jack....Rumours of Fleck...

How many players have Wendies managed to sell? And they're apparently desperate.

The only crumb of comfort is that Reading and Brighton have been have been in talks already and recently over the other Baldock (Reading must have had a look at mcnulty and realised they needed better) so hopefully it's brinkmanship with Moore and they can leave oconnell alone. (they can take our Moore to play centre back if they leave oconnell lalone)

Was feesable at 10 to 12m 6m is a fucking insult
We should offer 2m for one of their strikers.
see how they respond
I'm happy to be insulted at 6 million, nothing is going to happen, the worry is when they come in with offers where we aren't feeling insulted
