Waghorn's a better player than the Beattie we had. Far more to his game. He even scored as many non penalties last season as Beattie did in his full season with us.

Paying Beattie 40k p/w started the slide for us. There were far wiser ways to spend such money but we weren't a very wise club were we.

Reservations about the fee aside, let me just say I've always liked Waghorn since first seeing him for Sunderland and Leicester.

He always seemed like one who could end up playing for us.

Strong, fairly quick, hardworking, versatile, good attitude, direct, good left foot. Proper northerner. He'll be a big favourite with our fans. Think along the lines of Matt Done but a shitload more ability and productivity.

He'll fit into our squad/team very well, and for that reason I'm sure he'll produce for us this season. This will be central behind Wilder's decision to spend this amount on him. He wants someone who's guaranteed to deliver for us this season and there aren't many safer bets to do that than Waghorn.

Playing for a big club after signing for a big fee isn't a problem for him either, which is another plus.

He hasn't been hugely consistent over his career, that along with his age is the basis for concern about the fee, but he's coming off the back of a good season (16 goals and 11 assists in case anyone doesn't know) for quite a dour team so he should be able to maintain and build on that form in a more attacking team with more creative players and a better attacking platform.

When looking at players we could go for, I always consider how different they could be under Wilder and in our team. That's quite an exciting prospect with Waghorn because he was good enough last season for Ipswich.

Now I've typed that we better fucking sign him.

Could be someone else but it's looking unlikely. I expect that the major media outlets will get a hold of this before the announcement so further indications are possible as the day progresses. If Sky reports it then it's usually 100% correct.
