I think £5M should be enough. They only paid £250,000 for him from Rangers last
I'm now back to thinking we should go all in on Gallagher. If the likes of Waghorn are carrying these massive prices then surely a younger player who may appreciate in value is more attractive given you could argue it's a 50/50 as to who will contribute most this season.
I think we are going for both tbh.
Waghorn only cost Ipswich £250,000 last season from Rangers. I know they'd like £7.5M for him. Of course they would. But they're not bloody having it - simple as that. They shouldn't get confused by the price tag on other players who have moved on from the Championship for ridiculous fees. Like that Andy Gray bloke from Burnley, for example, who went for £9M didn't he? That was stand-out plain daft at the time. Re-wind 3 or 4 years before that and he was signed by Brentford for just £300,000 from Luton - and few people had heard of him!
How does a player go from being valued at £250,000 or £300,000 to £8m or £9m in 3 or 4 years? Easy! Play for a higher profile club and score some goals! But at the same time, it's ridiculous. And it should tell managers something...these players exist and are out there right now, playing for unfashionable lower league clubs in some cases. Spot them early, see the potential in them, get them signed and develop them, and you can save the club millions, and make the club millions later on.
In Waghorn's case he seems to have been around forever! His arrival on the pitch for Leicester usually brought a moan out of our fans, me being one of them. He always seemed to score against us. And if you look at his record, it's pretty impressive. He's scored just about everywhere he's been. He's had a few setbacks from injuries along the way, but his last two seasons suggest that shouldn't be a concern. And he scored 27 and 16 goals in the past two seasons as well. From what I remember about him, he's not the most devastatingly quick player, but he's an instinctive finisher. Probably more like Sharp than any other player in our current squad. I hope Billy is still playing for us in his 80's - but the reality is he won't be - so having an alternative like Waghorn would be good business imo.
Gallagher, I think, could be a master-stroke if we can pull it off. To be fair I haven't seen much of him, but from what I've researched he sounds like exactly the kind of player that could be plucked from someone's reserves and all of a sudden start to make headlines. Tall, good in the air, technically good and can finish. And would give us something different to what we've got.
