Surprising in a way. Less surprising given that they've not sold Mepham, the other CB.

Wonder what the fee is? I'd guess £2.5m.

That’s good news! Does it mean O’Connell will be leaving though?

The Shakey Jakies are out in force hunting Stears down again. A lust for revenge is never attractive.

Happily, Tufty will decide and Stears will will keep his place until displaced on merit not petty spite.

Quality signing as promised,
hope thats cheered a few up and he's the first of a couple more to come.
I wasn't getting worried honest.

Egan will challenge for the RCB position, imo.

If we do sign him, that is.

Think it will be Stearman to make way. Our inability to dominate in the air at centre half was our undoing on a number of occasions in the second half of the season. Egan addresses this and is an improvement on RS.

Going forward the partnership of Basham and Baldock is vital to us and continued to function despite teams trying to stop it. Our left side was less effective.

Wilder wants to and needs to compliment the better players already at his disposal, not change like for like, or in theory we don't move forward

I am not a great fan of Enda but the stats show he is decent .Thought Bash was quality but stats show gets beat in air most of time ..Not great for a Cb. Some games many Joc moves lb Enda parks it on bench others Bash parks it on bench . He can always come on and fill 2-3 roles .Proper player old school passion & plays without fear . We need options and this signing can provide it ..UTB

All those thinking Basham will make way are a tad deluded, Basham gets past our wingback by making runs and suiting our system down to the ground, Egan isn’t or never will be this sort of player, I hope that quashes that silly suggestion.

Oh, and it has nothing to do with Jake Wright, who is out injured by the way. Egan is a dominant centre back and if we pay the reported fee then he won’t be sitting on the bench either, he’ll be straight in.

No. Egan's right footed and will play CB/RCB. But it doesn't mean O'Connell's not leaving either.
Honestly! These “professional” footballers eh? “Right-footed” indeed. Listen: if they’re any good they should be able to play with either foot. I did!

Me fatha used to make me practice kicking a tennis ball against the shit-house wall in the back yard as a kid. I had to kick it with my right and trap the rebound with my left, then kick it with my left and trap the rebound with my right. I did it several hours a day. Then at the end me fatha would thrash me with his belt if one were better than t’other. And if it were a draw he’d make me do a replay!

Last season we had the 10th worst defensive record 58 goals conceded. We finished 10th. Basham and Stearman had one of the lowest headers won ratio in the division. If Egan is coming he's coming to play. A captain, leader and excellent header of the ball. He's a proper defender. First two CB names on the team sheet will be JOC and Egan the others can fight it out for the third spot.

used to red and white stripes

its all about upping the overall quality of the squad if we get 10 per cent better the play offs are there for the taking

Competition is key my dears. Egan won't be an outright replacement for anyone as Wilder never gives any player any guarantee of a place.

He could replace Bash. He could replace Stearman. He could cause both to up their game and he ends up replacing nobody (unlikely imo). The point is if one goes injured or dips in form then there is an able replacement chomping at the bit to get games. That's what Wilder's ethos is all about.

Amazing signing if true.Probably my number one realistic target. We've already got my number one realistic goalkeeper in, so I'm very happy with the quality of our incomings so far. This gives us the flexabilty in the squad to play a back four.We didn't really have that before. This kid is not a ball carrier at Brentford, which means he's unlikely to play RCB - unless we've abandoned the overlapping fullback idea.Egan is excellent in the air and hard in the tackle. Also fairly quick, which is important when playing a high line. Lets hope he can read the game like ol' leadboots.

Bit harsh as we're never going to have a really good defensive records due to the way we play and set-up. If you;re expecting wing-back to provide width and CBs to overlap you;re going to leave yourself open.

Waiting for a last minute raid by another northern club.... Yhihf

It’s a fair point that. My bigger concern is that when you push defenders forward in attack they don’t have the skill and guile to deliver the killer ball in the box or take a pot at goal. A speedy winger could wreak havoc in that situation, a full back is slower and looking to lay it off sideways or backwards, or hit a hopeful one into the box.

I agree with Addison though. I think if Egan joins it will be him and O’Connell (if he remains) as the main centre backs.

As far as we know down in Brentford this deal will happen and the fee is at the higher end of those mentioned.

Egan is a good solid Championship defender. Great in the air, decent on the ground and reasonable with the ball at his feet. He has also proved to be a good team captain, leading by example.

He should score more goals but is dangerous at set pieces.

Why are we selling? Who knows but he is probably at peak value and at Brentford if someone meets a player's valuation then he goes without question, particularly as he has already been replaced.

We play out from the back almost every time and sometimes he struggles with this part of his game but he has become more confident on the ball.

He is not the quickest but reads the game well.

He fully deserves to be an international defender and you will be getting an excellent team player and a lovely guy too apparently.

We all wish him well. He did an excellent job for Brentford but maybe we will replace him with somebody slightly more in tune with how we play.

Interesting. I doubt we’ll be spending the amount of money talked about to not have him straight in the team, so perhaps it’ll be Stearman switched to the right? Stearman isn’t the quickest, but could probably offer as much if not more on the ball than Basham currently.

Just quoting facts. The teams with the best defensive records go up. CW recognises this and up to now has bought in a goalkeeper who kept 17 clean sheets last season and if Egan comes off a defensive rock whose team prevented the opposition scoring on 15 occasions.

Last season a number of goals conceded were due to our inability to stop shots coming in from distance and deal with the ball in the air in midfield and at the back. The only time our formation was shown up defensively was against Fulham both games, Wolves away and possibly Cardiff away. You can play 3-4-1-2 and keep clean sheets.

Thanks for your brief insight

We need to improve to make it the next level. Hopefully Egan is one piece in the jigsaw to get us there

Luxury!
We had to do 12 hours at t'mill, then lick t'wall clean before we could even think about playing football. Then we had to make do with wi' a rolled up sock.

But seriously... does make me laugh when I see professional footballers that can only use one foot. Ever heard of practice?
