Retained/Transfer List

Retained lists doesn't really mean anything, anyone except Donaldson and Hussey could stay, anyone not on it could leave.

I hope we bring in another left back and let Lafferty go, not because of Lafferty himself, but because Wilder refused to use him at wing back no matter how badly Stevens was playing.

I am not sure what has happened with Lafferty. He certainly made an impact when he came on against Preston (at Preston), and I think he is more of a goal threat than Stevens. Anyway, it's the manager's choice.

I do wonder what has happened with Carruthers. He showed some early promise, but his form just seemed to dip away. Shame.
He’s a very talented player, I really do think so. But he’s so inconsistent and he’s not got much of a footballing brain. He’ll do something really brilliant then follow it with something really careless or plain stupid. Very frustrating!

I’m with you on that. I’m still not convinced either are quite good enough for the Championship though.

At the Preston (away) game, their players were constantly taking the ball away from his feet. Ball gets passed to him, he sort of looks at it, Preston player runs up behind him and steals it away from his feet.

Never happens to Fleck or Coutts, they get the ball, and quickly start to move with it, while simultaneously looking around for the smart pass, or just running forward to gain ground.

Carruthers is talented, no doubt about it, but some of the simple stuff seemed to pass him by.

It goes against conventional wisdom I know, but I didn't think Carruthers pulled up any trees for us at League One level, never mind this season. Yes we all enjoyed his dive against Bolton but that was about all he contributed.

Good to see us/Tufty being decisive. Admitting players are not good enough at this level and moving them on.

Other managers with bigger egos would be trying to get a tune out of Carruthers & Lavery.

I wonder if he'll be as decisive with Holmes and Leonard if they fall short?!

Changing the subject slightly but I'm starting to think Adkins never stood a chance at United with the shit he had to work with who were still under contract. I don't think they really took to him either.
Welcome aboard KC
Some of us have been banging that drum for ages.
Thanks Adkins for getting Billy cos Clough had assembled a relegation squad on a wholly unsustainable wages to turnover ratio.
The accounts were eye watering awful under in his regime.
Another year of that cliuff huff and we would have in really serious shit.

I think lafferty and probably jake Wright will also leave if we get a lwb/lcb Robinson from qpr? And then another cb, Webster from Ipswich has been mentioned?

I think CW has done just about as much as he dare without a confirmed budget (assuming he's still around to spend it!).
No point releasing Lafferty at this stage, as he can cover LWB & LCB, and we'd have to bring in a replacement anyway. Priorities lie elsewhere. Don't think Heneghan can continue to be "one for the future" at 24. We have Semple if CW fancies throwing in a young CB for Cup games. Thomas has something, but just doesn't fit the way we play.
The one thing I don't get is why Ched isn't being made available for loan/transfer? I've not seen much this season to indicate he can still cut it at Championship level. Cue the conspiracy theories on why he's still around...

Agree about Ched. Its alright people slating Donaldson, by that least he's contributed. Ched has probably cost as much over the season and done absolutely nothing.

There's no upside to Holmes, Lafferty, Wright and Ched. Should have ditched these too as there's nothing these can offer what our U23's cannot.
Lafferty has 50 appearances at Championship/PL level. Not sure who else we have that could replace him right now? Wright may end up leaving if we sign another CB. All depends on £££

Clayton Donaldson should have been kept on. Remember him tearing Sunderland up.

Never understood the Holmes signing, he chose Charlton over us that should've been end of story, having said that he is a different type of striker to the others so he does still offer something.

Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day...

I prefer to remember his countless substitute appearances where he came on and looked like he'd already played 85 minutes whilst carrying an injury....

He was a last minute panic buy when Devante Cole fucked us off who Wilder deserves immense credit for getting anything out of!

Don't beleave Ched has cost us much at all he will not be on big money and the deal with Spirited will depend on appearance s.
In other words ! game time and goals.
Can't see Wilder paying big money for a player who had not played football for five years with fitness issues,he is too shrewd.to do that.
Hope Ched makes it we have some player if he does.

This all feels a bit non-committal really, doesn't it?

2 loanees gone leaves us about 33 players on the books.

Hussey and Donaldson, both out of contract are not renewed, taking us to 31.

The 5 players we had out on loan are unsurprisingly still not considered good enough to impact the first team.

The 2 players who didn't really get a kick all season, Carruthers and Heneghan are also made surplus.

Within that remaining 24 are Jake Bennett, Norrington-Davies and Regan Slater and Jake Eastwood.

It certainly doesn't hint at anything radical - upgrades on Lafferty and Wright for instance, question marks over Ched and Billy etc.

It feels like a 'wait and see' type list.
Nothing like putting a player on the transfer list to focus them on the future ,one or two of that seven could still come good.

Very few professional sportsman who have been out of their respective sports for 2/3 years have returned and reached the level they were previously at. There is no sign of Ched getting back to the level he was 6/7 years ago. Don't forget he only hit form for us for 6 months out of 3 years. As Wilder says himself, there is no room for sentiment.

Legs have gone.

Not a fan of our “second string” midfield. If I’ve got a criticism of a largely entertaining season it has to be the midfield quartet of Carruthers, Lundstram, Leonard and yes Evans.
Not one of them had the wit or intelligence to understand what Coutts did for the team........and try and replicate it.
Lundtram was about the closest but got “blown out of the water” by the JTW.
I think all of them give the ball away too often and too easily to be credible replacements for Coutts or Fleck.

For the price paid for both Evans and Lundstram we have 2 good signings. Believe me I am no fan of Evans as dan see on previous posts. But if CW can cut out his bad points and same with Lundstram we have 2 very good players.

These players weren’t brought in to replace Coutts and Fleck they are here to play second fiddle and develop. In time they may or may not be able to take the shirt of them.

For me I would still splash out a central midfielder such as a Colback etc but obviously finances dictate.

He was a last minute panic buy when Devante Cole fucked us off who Wilder deserves immense credit for getting anything out of!

He was intended as a signing in addition to the Cole deal – it was clear from the coverage of it that Donaldson was agreed early on and we were still pushing for the Cole deal. We wanted both – the fact the latter fell through had no bearing on the former, and it certainly wasn’t a “last minute panic buy”.

I stand corrected (said the man in the orthopaedic shoes)....

I personally think Holmes believes he's made it to the Championship now, can't really get to premier league and just isn't really pushing for that place anymore when he can just pick up a better wage by sitting on the bench

I personally think that this is bollocks. Very cynical.

Just about every team in the division would struggle to afford backup players as capable as their 1st teamers - that's why they're backup.

Do you honestly expect Coutts' and Fleck's deputies to be a the same level?
