Portugal pre-season

We did a nice tour of the Cyclades last year - Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios, Folegandros and Santorini

Of that lot the only one we wouldn't go back to is Santorini, behind the stunning facade its a shithole, expensive one at that. Mykonos is mega expensive but had an amazing time there.

But I'd say the best of them was Folegandros and Paros.

My Advice is get a flight to Athens and then pick up the ferries from Pireaus.

You can island hop in the true sense if you don't go in high season, but if you're in high season book your hotels with Booking.com or similar and work your way around the islands.

Better to pick a group of islands like the cyclades and just explore - a few days on each island.

Only issue is that you have to plan the logistics around ferries, but its dead easy to do and ferries are cheap
Glad I've read this, Mrs has been harping on about visiting Santorini, purely because of the pictures she's looked at. Does look beautiful mind.

Don't get me wrong, its stunning. We arrived by ferry and the view of the island as you come in is fantastic, around Oia/ Finikia area, houses perched on the cliff, where all of the fantastic photos tend to come from is breathtaking.

We stayed down at the other side of the island down by Akrotiri end and had views over the cliff and up towards Oia. The place was stayed at was an amazing little boutique hotel.

However, behind all that the island is not really that attractive, the rest of the island slopes down towards the beaches on the other side and there isn't that much else going on, a few wineries (some really good whites from Santorini). We walked about 12km from Akrotiri to Ancient Thira which was fairly interesting and then down to Kamari Beach on the other side.

Oia/ Finikia area is just like something you'd find in tenerife or Lanza etc, not bad, but its row after row of over priced crap restaurants and pubs, with a few quad bike hire shops in between. Get stuck there at tourist rush hour and you'll be stuck in traffic for an hour or so.

The airport is shocking, like going back in time 20 years to some of the airports that you used to see on the Greek islands.

All in all its ok and probably better if you're starting your holiday there and heading to other islands from there, but in terms of expectations, it was really a big let down.

If you do end up going there, drop me a PM as there's some really nice restaurants and places to stay, but i'd say you'd get much better on some of the quieter islands.

This one seems to have sprung up again tonight on Facebook (yeah yeah I know). Some fella saying he spoke to Wilder sunday night at the awards and says he confirmed it. Didn’t get any dates.

Does this mean Wilder is staying?

And who fancies a jolly to Portugal?

I may be a grumpy old bas**rd but ......

After the performances at Barnsley, Birmingham and at home to Preston ........ I would be making the fuckers do pre-season in the Brecon Beacons ....... coached by the SAS !!:rolleyes::mad:

I have to agree about santorini. All fur coat and no knickers. Euboia is a great island. Very underdeveloped for tourism, naturally Greek.

I’m using the opportunity of a wedding in Santorini to do some island hopping. 10 days after Santorini then a flight back from Athens. Any recommendations of ‘must do’s’ would be much appreciated!!
