I sat in the John Street stand to watch EJO bat for Worcestershire, along with about 100 other. would have thought about a thousand turned up for a day's cricket at BDTBL in those times.

Transfer Deadline Day was the worst. Our purchase of Cecil Shillingworth from Old Etonions fell through due to the Carrier Pigeon going missing.

I thought it fell through because we only offered a tanner for him when Old Etonions valued him worthy of a full shilling.

No ambition..then.

You could be right, my memory is a bit vague. I remember all the hulabaloo at the time was quite something. Later to be eclipsed by the controversy surrounding our potential first foreign signing, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Certain board members decided to take matters into their own hands, and poor old Franz was done for. Things went a bit sideways after that IIRC.

Though with hindsight it could be argued that we dodged a bullet in not signing him, whereas poor Franz ended up taking one for the team elsewhere.

I think I sat on the kop, the bit in the sunshine towards the cricket pavilion. I certainly went to that game mainly because Ted was playing.

Sunday football on Parson Cross with the proverbial audience.

That takes me back - three United greats, and one all-time great. It also highlights the fact that Hodgy would have played more for England but for Ron Springett, Graham Shaw was overlooked with England picking just about anyone from bigger clubs, and Joe Shaw was considered “too small” compared to a certain Peter Swan.
Greaves was rarely overlooked due to his unmatched scoring ability, apart from the 1966 World Cup final when Ramsey picked Geoff Hurst
