Would the tongue read Peattie?

Wednesday had a player called Jack Whitham in the late 60’s. Came through their ranks and scored a few goals for them.

I vaguely remember Jack Whitham playing for Wendy. He scored 31 goals in 63 games before being transferred to Liverpool in 1970. Wikipedia says the fee was £57,000 but I seem to remember it was £100,000 - we sold both Jones and Birchenall for £100,000 in late 1967, so £57k sounds a bit cheap (even by our standards...)

Back row: Caldwell, Matthews, Tibbott, Paterson, Richardson, Conroy, Jones, Verde, Renwick, Vowden.
Middle row: Brown, Butlin, Charles, Houston, McPhail, Trusson, Hatton, Kenworthy, Bergara.
Front row: Brazil, Garner, Casey, Smith, Haslam, Flood, Burke, Moore, Cutbush.

All correct but it is Coldwell not Caldwell.

Paterson was signed from Man U, got injured pre-season and had to retire due to injury.

Geoff Vowden coached us for one season. Ex-Birmingham and Villa player.

Mark Smith never played in the 1st team for us. Later played for Huddersfield

John Burke was signed from a non league team in Scotland but never played for our 1st team

Once saw Tony Moore take a throw-in, in front of the John Street stand at the Bramall Lane end and with no Blade within 10 yards of him, he just picked the ball up and threw it out for a goal kick. Still got lockjaw at the thought of it today!
The kit he has on was later sponsored by Cantors, a furniture store for the tune of £1,000 and when played in the FA Cup that season and wore the shirts, we got fined £1,000 for the privilege - somethings never change.

Paterson completely forgotten about. I think we signed Burke from Motherwell and sold him to Exeter. Don't recall Smith at all.

5918004D-B493-4366-B7A7-53A72A664081.jpeg I came across this earlier today. Mrs SW12 got a bee in her bonnet about cleaning the house and wanted me to file some recent cricket scorecards “as they were collecting dust!”
Anyway, seeing as the season is almost over and cricket has started I thought this might be of interest to some of our older contributors.

Ps, if anyone is in the least bit interested, I can post the front and back of the scorecard, I didn’t realise how much the bonus points system had changed in cricket.

I was there on the final day. Sad in many ways and the game ended in a draw. Farokh Engineer, though, great reminder.

IIRC their capacity was about 21k but they didn't release the attendance once the wall fell down. As if by magic, the 'official' attendance was declared a few hundred under their capacity. I think everyone on the Tivoli that day knows it was many thousands over capacity.

I was there too - and on the Tivoli. I think I remember the Rotherham United secretary being asked, on Radio Sheffield the morning of the match; what the ground capacity was at Millmoor - and he answered that he didn't know but they'd find out later that day. Bearing in mind many were climbing the floodlight pylons and that the wall collapsed, I'm not sure he ever found out the true, safe capacity. Next week was their home match against South Barnsley FC - pretty sure by then they had decided on a safe capacity and it was around 21 000 whereas I thought there were about 25 000 when we played. Wednesday added some class to the occasion by bashing the hastily repaired wall down with hammers didn't they?

Great picture. Who are the opposition here? West Ham?
Yes, the late Graham Paddon is the West Ham player in the photo. We lost 2-0 in September 1975. The big story in the papers in the next day was that TC got subbed despite not having an injury.

I was about to go to the match with my school friend (Norwich fan) after we wrote in the school exeat forms that we would be in Newbury all day. On arriving in Paddington by train we had second thoughts about going to Upton Park because we realised that we wouldnt see much of the match before returning to Paddington to catch the train early enough to be back to our school near Newbury before bedtime so we went to watch Arsenal v Everton instead

Brilliant, proper schoolboys' adventure that. I bet you would've been in big trouble if you got back to school late.
