Drop it, BTL. 30 points out of our last 27 games tells it's own story (as does our longest winning sequence in that time. Two games):

It's incredible that - mathematically - we could still make the play-offs and then what? Inglorious failure to teams that deserve to be there.

Miracles do happen - just not to The Blades.
I agree we won't get there but deserve?? It's a 46 game season. August and September count just as much as March and April

Not for United they don't. In August and September we got 21 points. In March and April (with one game left), we've got eleven points. That's why teams like Millways (just ended a 17-game unbeaten run) and Fulham (a 22-game ongoing unbeaten run) deserve it far more than us.

What difference does being in the same division make? Surely it doesn't matter which league we're both in, if we're at home then they have to be away and vice versa. How many times in the last 20 seasons have we been home/away on the last day?

Twelve away (including Bristol City this season) and eight at home. However, the Bristol game is the first time we've been away in the last six seasons.

That's just the first point you made but with different words :)

There isn't a points weighting for when you won your games. Your final position is where you deserve to finish after 8 months of games.

If you want to talk about who the better team is right now then you can - but you're selecting an arbitrary time period to base your opinion that other teams deserve to finish above United

im only talking about us winning a home game against a team we beat 1-0 in the cup at home a couple of months back

It would be such a nice change to get the mirror image of the day we went down at Chelsea

footballis a cruel mistress and throws up strange endings

I too think its improbable

but stranger things have happened

and a last day at bristol whos had 2 3~3 draws and a 5-5 recently and lost to brentford at home

the championship is weird

Whilst I just can't see it at all, especially as we have had great opportunities over the last few weeks and not taken them, I do agree that you'd think sooner or later it will be us who do it the other way around for a change.

I can't ever remember coming from behind late in the season

It's always been comfortable or hanging on by our finger tips in my time.

I think I'm right in saying that it's never happened. We have never passed anyone in the last 2 or 3 games to get promoted or s playoff place.

In perpetuation of the positivity:
All you whinging fuckers will be able to buy a row of seats each at Brizzle - should enhance your loyalty points somewhat to allow a ticket at t'Sty next time we visit

The last time being the last time we were in the same division as the Pigs. Every time we are together they get the last home game.

You could be right, Rev. Going back 'just' 60 years (the 1958-59 season), we've been in the same division for 21 seasons. For the last fixture of those seasons, we've been at home just 5 times and away 16 times (and, of course Wednesday vice versa).

It could be argued that the 'die was cast' by the last game in a lot of seasons re. finishing positions (although I've seen United relegated four times on the last day - 3 home, one away). On Boxing Days (i.e. bumper crowds) we've been at home 12 times over that period and away 8 times (the 1962-63 season, Boxing Day, and several other fixtures were snowed off).

overdue then innit

to be honest when burnley went 2-0 needing 3 to deny us with 30 minutes to go tought it had gone
and when we lost 4-0 at leeds looked mighty bleak then too

Even when we've been comfortably in the play offs we've always finished the season poorly.

We've never won on the final day going into the play offs.

1997 (5th) - DWD
1998 (6th) - DLL
2003 (3rd) - DWL
2009 (3rd) - LWD
2012 (3rd) - LDD
2013 (5th) - LLD
2015 (5th) - DDD

That's 3 wins out of 21 matches. Appalling.

Over the years I've convinced myself that we'll never win the play offs until we finish in that elusive 4th place.

It's always the hope that kills you.

While I think we've no chance of making the top 6, there is still a small part of me praying for favourable combinations of results, and an unlikely 2 wins for us to see something of a miracle happen.

But suppose it does....then what? Would we be outclassed by (probably) Fulham over 2 legs, and end the season feeling dejected at another playoff defeat? Or would we do what others have done in the past...sneak in on the last day then achieve the unlikeliest of promotions?

Personally I reckon it'd be option A. That said, if the stars align in a once in a lifetime way, I will personally bankrupt myself and generations of my family to come to erect a 50 foot high statue of Chris Wilder at the Lane.

We’ve had umpteen chances to get back into the top six....... but fucked it up each time.
Unfortunately our players have already got their collective flip flops on.

Dirty Leeds fans would pretty much think this season was disaster for them. We seem to think we’ve had “alright” season and currently sit one place above them in 11th.
After such a great start....We’ve well and truly disappeared up our own arse and proved all those snivelling little pundits right.

Oooh you're so close.

No, the Millwall game ends in defeat, however, we do score. 94th Minute and what a cracker. Fleck slamming one home from 40 yards. Its a hell of a strike.

But the linesman spots an infringement, its spurious to say the least, but after a long discussion with the ref its disallowed.

Bristol City lump it forward, "Steven Gerrard" dive in the area, replays show that JOC didn't touch the player, Penalty given.

Blackman gets a hand to it to tip it onto the bar, the ball bounces down onto the goal line and then out again. Bristol City celebrate, but it wasn't in. It never went over the line.

The ref gives the goal and blows for full time

Missed the most important part:

Warnock runs onto the pitch and celebrates with the Bristol fans.

After the 0-0 draw at Wendy in April 12th 1971, we were a point behind Cardiff who had 6 games left to play and we had 5 left

Well couldn't believe how Cardiff folded in last 20 tonight at Derby which just about cuts us out. Were tight and mean against us Cardiff . Tonight looked shambolic and just gave it away

Given what I've observed from the first 90%+ of the season, the division is Wolves > Fulham >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> various levels of rubbish that can fuck it up on any given day > Sunderland, I'm not sure why Cardiff choking away automatic promotion would be a surprise
