Good evening all,

It’s that time of the year again, where the Inter Blades head to the fields of Bodington Hall Leeds, to do battle against 63 other Supporters teams for the Worldnet Cup or Plate. As you’ll see from the Press Release below, this tournament is being billed as “The Biggest Ever Football Supporters Tournament”.

For those that are fairly new to the Blades message boards that don’t know about us, the Inter Blades compete in the Internet Football Association league, against other similar supporter’s teams throughout England and Scotland.

To explain a bit about the IFA, the league is comprised of Supporters teams which communicate through message boards, e-mail groups etc. Matches usually take place in the morning before the real teams’ fixtures in the afternoon. Games are expected to be played in a friendly spirit as the ethos of the IFA is to “build bridges between rival sets of supporters”. This isn’t to say that the games aren’t competitive, but they are expected to be played in a sportsmanlike manner. For further details about the IFA, please see the website http://www.internetfootball.org.uk

Worldnet 09 - The Biggest Ever Football Supporters Tournament

Worldnet 2009, the annual supporter’s football tournament kicks off in Leeds on Friday 24th July at the University of Leeds.

80 teams will vie for the Internet Football Association Cup, Plate and Veteran's Bowl. This year sees two teams from Nigeria and Worldnet regulars RC Lens from France chasing successes in previous tournaments.

Matches take place over the weekend with finals for the three trophies taking place on the Sunday afternoon. All the matches take place at the Bodington Hall playing fields on Otley Road in North Leeds.

Tournament Organiser, John Boocock says:

“This is tournament 13 and will see our greatest ever number of participants. We are really pleased to have the involvement of the FSF in real grass roots football played by real football fans.

“As ever it will be a big day for supporters pulling on their favoured team's shirt and playing football.

“Internet Football is not just about winning, it's about building bridges between rival groups of supporters and this tournament is the epitome of that sentiment.”

The tournament is organised by the Internet Football Association which was founded in 1996 at the time of the first Worldnet tournament during Euro96. Full details of the weekend are available at www.worldnet.org.uk

The Internet Football Association is made up of football supporters who belong to internet mailing lists, websites and message boards.

The tournament starts on Friday Evening with a Scotland England international and the Final of the IFA Challenge Cup between West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End. Over the weekend the tournament organisers will be collecting donations for the WaterAid charity and The Homeless World Cup.

This year the tournament has been assisted by the Football Supporters Federation who have prepared a free programme for participants and spectators. Many Worldnet players are members of the FSF as well as members of Supporters Trusts and Supporters clubs across the UK.

Inter Blades Manager, Danny Brown says:

“This will be our third appearance at Worldnet; we’re hoping to follow up the relative successes in the previous two tournaments with even greater success at this one. In 2007 we won the IFA “Bowl”, and then last season we were knocked out at the Plate semi-final stage on penalties, by an Arsenal Nigeria side containing a few former Nigerian Internationals.

This season we’ll be taking our strongest ever squad to Leeds, containing 22 Blades fans (the majority of which are season ticket holders). We kick off the group stage with fixtures against Dumbarton and Dundee United, but our final group game is the one that catches the eye, a match against West Ham. We also have friendly fixtures arranged with Peterborough and Brentford throughout the day.”
