Sheffield United's proposals to redevelop their Bramall Lane stadium have been given the green light by Sheffield City Council.

The go-ahead by the council's planning committee is a significant step forward for the Blades as the club continues to expand and improve their ground.

United's application for the first phase of the redevelopment will see an increase in the size of the club's Frasers Property Kop, taking the overall capacity of Bramall Lane to 37,000.

United chief executive, Jason Rockett, said: "This is positive progress in continuing our strategy to expand the facilities at Bramall Lane. It forms part of our extensive business plan which aims to increase income streams for reinvestment into the first-team.

"This is very much the first phase of our proposed redevelopment plans of the stadium and we intend to submit further proposals in the coming weeks. As a club we continue to recognise that success on the pitch is of paramount importance and goes hand in hand with the development of the off the field business."

United's redevelopment of the Kop will include removing the columns, a new concourse offering modern kiosks and toilet facilities, new executive boxes, community and educational facilities, as well as improved services for disabled supporters which will be built in the Evolution Corner Stand.

United are also looking to build a second business enterprise centre between the Kop and South Stand.

The existing Blades Enterprise Centre continues to be 95 per cent let and last year had a turnover of £1.1million. A second enterprise centre is seen as a continuation of that success and provides an opportunity for those companies who have outgrown the existing centre to expand and remain at Bramall Lane.

In a report to the council's planning committee, officers said the development "will not only contribute to the upgrading of an important community facility and the present and future viability of the club, but will also represent an improvement in the appearance of the ground when viewed from the public domain."

The report added that the development was of acceptable design quality, would enhance the general visual amenity of the locality and the physical presence of the proposed structures should not cause significant loss of residential amenity in terms of overshadowing or overbearing.

The Blades recently began consultations with local residents and supporters over phase two of its long-term redevelopment strategy.

Proposals include extending the size of the club's South Stand with a purpose built exhibition and conference centre, as well as additional commercial, corporate and banqueting facilities. A new ticket office and club shop will also be created.

This could eventually see Bramall Lane capacity extended to 44,000.
 



Good News. But we need to get to the promised land in order to fill it and make the revenue streams come in. Here's hoping this is it this year, leaving it late to improve the squad though

ruddy hell that's a great profit margin for something I thought was just a filler for the corner. Excellent project!
I think we have our heads screwed on right at this club, were increasingly growing and off the field looking better than most prem clubs. Just need to match it on the field!
 
Profit margin and turnover are two entirely different things, sadly. Despite that encouraging figure, we and the businesses inside may have made no profit, or even a loss...
 
A 44,000 seater stadium will look fantastic if we ever manage to sell it out. Under the current footballing circumstances that seems as likely as us signing a player from a club higher up the league system than Watford, i.e. bloody unlikely.

I would imagine that gross and net profit off this Enterprise centre to be very low, otherwise they would have mentioned this rather than the turnover figure.
 
Need to check the yearly accounts for proof of any profit, if turnover was just over a million, i would have thought that we'd have made a small profit.

I was told by a very good source in management that there was no way they would ever put seats in the new corner, office space had far money in it
