He's seemed annoyed ever since the January Transfer Window. Maybe not surprising...

Disagree.

We had one of our best EVER transfer windows.
Kept all our best players and signed up all our targets.

Would guess that Wilder has a relation with McCabe
And McCabe isn’t sure where the club is heading in the long term regards ownership, so Wilder is also uncertain where the club is heading.

I see some people are already sharpening their knives with Wilder firmly in their sights.

No doubt, Sir Chris will end up being slagged off to high heaven and will forever be criticised for one thing or another despite all the good he has has done (think Bassett and Warnock). A certain section of fans seem to get off on this kind of thing.

I fucking hate football sometimes.

95% of what Chris says is bob on IMO.

The only thing that he’s said a few times that sometimes made me question his judgement is when he’s said ‘Financially this is a bottom six squad, we’re punching way above our weight’, or words to that effect.

Yes it’s a fact and I suppose it would make sense saying it right now the way things have panned out, bit of reverse psychology maybe to make them grit their teeth and kick on, but he said it more than once when we were top or very near the top and playing well. I thought at the time that all it would achieve was to make some players who were on top of their game question if they were really good enough to carry it off for the season, whilst Chris was by saying it enhancing his own reputation.

Nobody’s perfect. It’s a minor point in the scheme of things, we all make mistakes and maybe wish we’d said something differently, but I just thought I’d share my unbiased view.

I agree that 95% of what Wilder says is spot on.
I can't believe that nobody else thinks he's bang out of order for slagging the players or bigging himself up above the players to pricks from the media. Slag them off in private if you have to but not on the radio. That's not what the head of the team does, it's snidey and it will upset some players.

Psychology is a non-exact science, other than that people tend to decide and react based on their own experience rather than on objective rationality.

If a team/employee/army performs worse than usual, you scream at them and they perform better next time and then you believe that you have had an effect.

The reality is that their performance would very probably have improved anyway, as it will always tend towards their norm.

Tufty’s personality is one of total honesty - and my guess is that anybody who matters in the team loves him for that. If he didn’t come out with exactly how he feels then they, and we, would think less of him.

Claiming credit etc isn’t like him so I’m sure that anybody that knows him can see that he’s hurting and feeling a bit less secure.

If the team spirit exists that I believe is there, then seeing him hurting a bit will only motivate in a positive way - irrespective of what he actually says.

As Billy Joel once sang ‘Honesty is hardly ever heard’ and getting it from a football manager is a rare gift for a club and a team.

Long may it continue.

The Magic Goes On

I also find a few of his recent comments grating, mainly because of their honesty.

But, there are messages to supporters, players and the owners in there that all need to hear, to set expectations and understanding of what the future holds.

He's seen at close quarters now the players some other teams have and whilst say 10th would be great in our first year back, he's not going to be satisfied with that or be prepared to hover around the Championship like Ipswich.

I expect that if he had the means, half our current squad would be moved on, regardless of whether they recently arrived or are on long term deals.

Ownership issues aside, the Summer transfer window could be interesting as he reflects on what's worked and what's not.

He's not sentimental remember.

I wish I could like this a 1000 times! This is the best manager we have had in a generation, the football we play and how we have a go. How anyone can even question him is beyond me, what’s wrong with the modern day football fan? You do remember the last 6 years don’t you keef? You do remember the complete lack of entertainment and players just strolling around.

He took a bunch of players who we all wanted shut of and made them play, we are still in with a sniff of the top 6 and some supporters are unhappy because he has had a go at the players! Awww didums as far as I am concerned he can say what he wants about the players I trust his judgement and every fan of this club should also trust his judgement. Some fans are never happy and that’s the problem unless we are smashing the league by 20 points people will always moan! Grow up and understand how far we have come I am sure Chris will have us going again if we fail to reach the playoffs.

If you don't think the players deserved berating after the Hull game then I would guess you were watching a different game to the rest of us. Yes Wilder had a go at them. Good! It was a bloody pitiful performance, and it did look like players had let their standards slip - some managers may accept this but not Wilder, and I for one am delighted about that.
He was probably right about being the one who made us kick on last season too.

Don't like the bloke on a personal level, but nobody can deny he's an excellent manager. Would hate to think where the club would be without him. He does ramble on a bit in his interviews though

Spur of the moment comments made immediately after the heat of the battle to some journo knob thrusting a microphone up yer nose....

.....Really need to be taken with a pinch of salt and not imbued with meanings never meant or an excuse to bash Wilder.

How would any of us cope with live interviews in these circumstances without saying things in the heat of the moment?

We wanted passion, we got it.

People reading far too much into these interviews. Far too much.

The Hull interview: the performances were shit, and he made the calculated decision to have a go at the players in public to make sure it didn't happen again. He might come across as your mate Chris from down the pub, but he's not--he's a seasoned professional sportsman with a proven track record as an excellent man manager. Do you really think he'd just wander out of the dressing room and just say whatever he felt like because he was a bit mardy? Give me strength.

The Forest interview: he was simply trying to impress on the interviewer and the fans that the whole squad would keep fighting until the last kick of the season, as they did last year. Nothing more, nothing less.

The idea he has turned on the players is laughable. When countless on here and elsewhere were slagging them off during the rough patch in December, Wilder was their number one defender.

Shock headline

Players don’t perform and actually get blamed.

Every industry in the world this is what happens. The players have shown they are good enough and recently havent performed as well. Hence getting a rollicking by someone who doesn’t stand for nonsense.

I said at start of Jan CW if he doesn’t get the backing needed he will look elsewhere.

Given the budget on offer, yes.

He wanted a bigger budget, and given that would have had different targets.

“He wanted a bigger budget”

Just like every other manager in the game. We got the players, or at least two of them, that he had been chasing for a very long time.

We signed the players he wanted ***WITH THE BUDGET HE HAD.

He should've had more money. Plain and simple.

But the money isn’t there. He would have known this when he took the job, unless he was told there would be more money and it didn’t appear, which I’m sure isn’t the case.

Whilst it's a very risky game (and ironically for us - one which will put off PL clubs!!) if Wilder wants to live by that sword, then who are we to question it. It hadn't done Mourinho too much harm.

Dare I say, read Fatty Samuels article in today's Mail where he questions whether a Mourinho is really bullying Shaw or is it the snowflake generation....

So long as Wilder is prepared to die by the sword of it goes tits up, GLTTL...

Can't believe that
#1 You admit to reading the Daily Hate and
#2 You would ever quote Fat Cunt Samuels with any semblance of credit on this site.

Thank you George, I've never been called provocative.

First the Hull interview. If you want to throw your players under the bus you do it in the changing room, not to radio bastard Sheffield.
Did it work? For a very short period.

Forest interview. Before the interviewer could finish his sentence about the players' strong finish to last season, Chris jumped straight in and made it all about him. He's had loads of praise for last season and rightly so but he seems very insecure because it's not all going his way at the moment.

I did think at the time it was a bit of a strange response to the question.

The trouble is, if you're personally taking the plaudits for last seasons winning finish, by the same standards, you must surely be prepared to take personal responsibility for defeats, on your inability to 'push the lads on'?

Shame really because without doubt, he generally talks a lot of sense and is the best manager United have had for many many years and I for one am fully behind him. So Chris, drop the Warnock speak, we don't need you to tell us what a good job you're doing or what a great manager you are, we already agree FFS ;)

Let's not forget that CW is still learning at this level.
Eh?

Man-management is the same at this level as it was at the last level and that’s what this is about isn’t it?

He’s not done anything wrong as far as I can see. He tells it how it is and whilst that can be uncomfortable sometimes it at least means everyone knows where they stand. Some will like it, others won’t, but no-one will be unsure.

But unlike all his competitors, his budget was much smaller. Hence, the player he was chasing were of lower quality.

To say that he got the players he wanted misses the obvious, in spectacular fashion.

What was the budget of all the other teams? How much did they all spend in the January transfer window?

I don’t know, but I do know we don’t need to have a debate about comparative budgets, unless we’ve got hidden agendas. We know how our budget stacks up.

I do know that Lee Johnson was offered 4 time’s that Wilder was.

We signed more players in January than most of the other teams in this league and those who did sign players tended to bring in loans mostly.

Overall our budget isn’t as much as we’d all like it to be, I don’t know how it stacks up against the other teams though so if you can provide some details on that I’d be interested to hear it. We were discussing Wilder being happy with his signings in January though.

Like I said earlier though, when Wilder came in he would have been told there wasn’t much money, he can’t exactly complain now that it’s obviously the case. If the money isn’t there then it isn’t there.

I can tell you, with a great deal of confidence, that Wilder was disappointed with the budget made available in January.

From that position, he went on to sign the players that budget would allow. Within the constraints of that budget, I’m sure he was then happy with the dealings.

The suggestion that he should be happy with it is wholly unrealistic.

How many managers do you think there are who are happy with the budget they have and wouldn’t like more given the chance?

The fans know there’s no money, I’m sure Wilder would have known this also

Wilder’s budget is much smaller than all his competitors. Given our league position, and bonus payments from the likes of Maguire, he would be right in at least hoping for much more than he got. Even the joint owner expected more. Hence it not just being Wilder who was disappointed with what transpired.

I’ve long argued that you can’t spend what you haven’t got. That’s a different story to the human emotion of hoping for better.

But you can hope as much as you like, if you know the money isn’t there then you can’t be disappointed if it doesn’t materialise. Like I said before, it appears Wilder spent more in January than a lot of the teams in our division, regardless of how small his budget was.

Which owner was it that expected there to be a bigger budget by the way? Either one of them could’ve put more money in if they really wanted to.

Edit: I should add that I fully agree with you that Wilder’s budget should be bigger, as it sounds like I’m arguing the opposite.
