I reckons we'll need 80 points to make the playoffs.

This means we'll need 21 points from a possible 27 left.

Will we do it?

I think we'll come up a little short based on current form. Having said that we are definitely capable of of having a good run up to the end of the season.

One thing you've got to consider is that because the bottom clubs are so shit this season, they have got less points than the historical average. Therefore the points have gone elsewhere, i.e. to those at the top, who will end up with more than average. So yeah, I'm with you, 80 points sounds a lot but is the probable target for this season.

It will be 75 points needed, always has been and always will.......

Or there’s been more draws than usual meaning less points have been given out.

If the bottom clubs keep losing, that means someone is winning. You'll work it out in the end if you engage your brain.

On average, teams have needed 73 points to reach the play-offs in the last 10 Championship seasons. In 2012-13, Leicester City reached the play-offs with just 68 points - the lowest number a team has ever required to make the second-tier play-offs. Two seasons later, however, Wolves finished with a huge 78 points yet still managed to miss out on sixth place to Ipswich Town on goal difference.

Leicester's play-off-qualifying low points total in 2012-13 was not thJust a season later, Paul Caddis' added-time goal against Bolton Wanderers helped Birmingham City stay up with 44 points, the lowest of any surviving team for 31 years.e only anomaly of that season. Poor old Peterborough United were relegated with 54 points, just 14 fewer than the Foxes.

Wow, what’s upset you. o_O

I was only suggesting that less points might have been given out, caused by more draws happening.

Have the bottom clubs lost more than usual? Have the top clubs won more than usual?

And just as a quick indicator as to what I mean, Rotherham came bottom last season, losing 33 games and drawing 8. Sunderland have so far lost 19 and drawn 13. If Sunderland lost all of their remaining games they’d have still lost 5 less than Rotherham did last season.

Obviously there will be other results which go against what I say but even at this stage of the season the top 3 have drawn the same amount as the top 3 last season, even with 9 games to go.

Edit: and I’ve just worked it out. If there are 8 more drawn games between now and the end of the season there will have been more draws this season than last.

Brain engaged ;)

You can factor in that the bottom clubs will have to put a shift in as they are facing relegation (of course) and normally one or two pull thier socks up, but then one breaks free and finishes the season as a championship club for next season..

Usually a club teetering on the edge slides on the last day in a shock relegation, dunno who I think could possibly suffer that fate, but regardless of our playoff hopes, that might be very interesting to see...:D

I can see Barnsley and Bolton battling out of it leaving Reading and Wednesday in the mix, bit of a shame that the bottom 3 are kicking the arse out of being crap this season!

Bottom 3 after 37 games
This year 30, 30, 28 (6th 62 pts)
Last year 38, 34, 17 (61)
15/16 36, 32, 26 (59)
14/15 34, 31, 22 (62)
13/14 32, 31, 29 (59)

Does seem irrespective of what the bottom teams do getting into the play offs seems unaffected.
(yeah I appreciate still 9 games to go).

It's not just the bottom 3 though is it. The bottom 6 (or 7:D) are way out of sync with the norm.

75 points needed so 16 from 27.

Of our last 9 games 5 are against teams currently in the top 10.

We need at least 9 points from those 5 games and then pick up 6 in the other 4 games.

It’s a tough ask but I think we can do it.

Got a horrible feeling our poor GD may cost us 6th place.

Ultimately it doesn’t matter... we just need the win as many football games as possible

and work out a way to beat Fulham! (Who are just running out of games too quickly)

If Fulham got 76 last season they would have still finished 6th

Fair enough. I read it as if it were from another teams perspective

E.g. 76 points last season would not have been enough to finish top 6 because Fulham got 80.

For a different team to break into the play offs last season they would have needed 81 points.

We could easily get 4 points from the next two games and 4/6 wins in April really isn't unrealistic.
Would give us 16 points going into the Bristol City game probably needing a point or a win.
Tough ask but April really has the potential to put us right amongst it going into the last day.
