Just reading an old programme, it's interesting to see that on September 24th 1996 we lost 5-2 at home to Stockport County (now in the National League North) in the League Cup.
Four days later, on September 28th we had an easier time beating lowly Manchester City 2-0 (now arguably the best team in Europe). I don't know which of these two results would be the more unlikely in 2018!Screenshot_20180301-220841.png

Kevin Francis and Alun Armstrong inspired Stockport. I went to the away leg!

They had a decent team in the 90s. It is sad to see how far they have fallen, it wasn't a bad away day.

We got into the play offs last day of the season with a loss at Stockport. Other things I remember about that day are Arsenal winning the league with Tony Adams scoring that one on one late on. Also it was Wilders second spell with us - he looked like an umpa lumpa - fake tan and overweight. He came on the pitch to celebrate afterwards. He wasnt popular at the time!

I remember going on the last day of the season when Thompson was in charge. We lost 1-0 but results elsewhere meant we secured a play off place. A certain Chris Wilder threw his boots into the away end as it was confirmed we has secured the top 6

Same memory above!

He certainly wasn't great in that 2nd spell. I was still at school and recall one of our teachers at the time spending half a business studies lesson moaning about how bad Thompson's signings had been. Think he signed Wilder, Jon Cullen and Shaun Derry.

I recall Wilder getting the run around away at Sunderland in the play off 2nd leg too .

Jon Cullen. Another fan of fake tan!

Somebody missed a great chance in the last minute of the home leg. We might have done it if that had gone in.

Although that was the year of the Sunderland Charlton play off final that went to penalties after a 3-3 draw. Great game. We would have lost 3-0 because we don't score in finals

My mates a season ticket holder at Stockport County, i’ve seen them quite a few times, including against the Dingles and South Barnsley. We played them,in’the FA cup early 1980’s ? I went straight after working nights, without sleep, slept on the train all the way back.

We had to wait for the Birmingham City result to come in before we knew we were in play offs. Only then did the team come out to celebrate with the fans. Remember it well.

4-4 after extra time, just watched it on Sky

Steve Thompson (from hazy memory) was responsible for signing;

- Ian Hamilton
- Paul Devlin
- Chris Wilder
- Earl Barrett

What was the Charlton keepers name? I've got Sasa Curcic in my head but hecwas the Bolton/Villa player who went to Scotland and said he'd take women instead of money as wages :)

I'd forgot about Devlin and Hamilton. Think you're right about him signing them. No idea with Earl Barrett

Me too - standing on the Railway End where back in the days of steam trains away fans used to get smothered in smoke every five minutes.
I think Vonk scored for us. I remember David White trying to pump the fans up when we got a corner. He didn't get much of a response :)

It's all about the here and now, you cannot change history but you can shape the future.
