O'connell

Yes, his defensive heading is good but last season we benefitted from him getting forward and his attacking threat at set pieces. This season we haven't. Neither he nor Basham offer much in attack. Nor does Stevens at the moment. Last season it was our attacking wing backs and overlapping centre backs that caused a big threat and led to a lot of goals. This season, against the better sides, the lack of quality is being exposed.
Slight modification - agreed they have not been as much of a threat this year, but seeing Wright and Heneghan in those roles v Preston makes you realise what we are like with no threat from those positions. They were fine defensively, though.

Speaking of more pressing issues, for O'Connell to get the opportunity to attack the ball from corners, we need to start taking better corners.

At the end of the day, we need to remember that he (and Basham) play centre half, and are both returning to the championship from spells in L1. I know they have to play a roll when going forward, but we have to be realistic with what we're asking from them.
Which is my point. The tactic of getting the centre halves forward isn't as effective with the players we have so we either get better players or reconsider the tactic.

Not negative.he misses some good chances.'New fan' since 1965

Some post creation practise methinks.......
Your posts are like my Dad's texts, short with no apparent explanation and a lack of decent spelling and grammar.

Must try harder.

I'd find it difficult to criticise JOC. He's been one of our most consistent players and looks very comfortable in the championship. He is, however, definitely due a goal. I think he may be saving them up for one game.

A thought which has crossed my mind, seems to have crossed your mind and I dare say Wilder may be thinking the same.

Not to say we have to completely disregard 5-3-2, but it would probably be prudent to have an alternative.

Notice how when Sterling scored that goal against Cardiff a few days ago he headed it down, not even hard, so it bounced in front of the keeper making it very hard for the keeper to judge it and stop it. Wish we would learn to do the same. We tend to head them straight at the keeper or over.

I was thinking more of tactics than just formation. That could be having the sitting midfielder going forward and one of the defenders coming more centrally into his position or the LWB holding a bit and Fleck going wider to pick up the ball from JOC to cross it in. But I'm no expert. Fortunately Knill is. Him and Wilder should bounce a few ideas off each other. A change of formation may ultimately be the answer but I'm not sure it has to be.
It might be as simple as Leon dropping a bit deeper and playing on the turn whilst Wilson looks to stretch them running onto through balls or balls over the top.

Very good point, some subtle tweaks might really improve the performances. I especially like the idea of the CM taking some of the attacking responsibility from the CB - I feel all of our CM options could potentially offer more going forward.

Thankfully, as you said, both Knill & Wilder acutely aware of our problems, and I have faith that they'll work out how to fix them.

Your seriously saying Jack should copy Sterlings heading ability ? I'ts like Derek Dooley telling Frank Sinatra how to sing New York, New York.:p

i’m going to say it .. i’ll get hammered for this but here goes.. we are unbalanced because of enda and bash, who have spectacularly lost form in fact bash is in danger of becoming the new monty.,
enda upsets joc on the left and similarly bash upsets george in the right
lafferty for enda and anyone for bsh (lenny?)

We only became an attacking force v Preston when Basham came on (whatever his limitations).
