Thought i’d focus on our ex Wednesday, talismanic top scorer on the eve of derby day. The hero of the day at Hillsborough in the bouncing day massacre.

How does Leon compare to our most recent ‘great’ strikers?

Based on the fact he’s doing it in a very tough championship he beats Sharp and Evans all ends up and his biggest competition is Beattie as an all round player.

But what Leon lacks in technique and set piece ability he makes up for in running and link up play. He’s also doing it in a better league than what Beattie was in.

In current form Leon Clarke is out best since Deane for me. Dunno how everyone else views it but 15 before the turn of the year is crazy.

More of the same tomorrow please from our player of the year. Rub their snouts in it again Leon.

Well for me, that position is taken by the man who stopped us getting sent to the 4th division before firing us to the 2nd.
Anyone else remember him? Nah, wrong place.
I think you’ll find I mentioned him in the OP, but he isn’t as good an all rounder as Clarke is in terms of pure talent. Ched nearly took us up almost single handed but he similarly doesn’t compare to how Clarke is playing at the moment.

I remember him ,fucked us off twice didn't he ?

You mean he was fucked off by a big nosed cock end of a manager the first time and returned in 2015 on half his wages at Leeds and also stated that he would never have left if it was his choice.

Knowledge is power.

Hulse was fantastic till he got injured. I see a few similarities between the two. Big, strong etc. I'd say Clarke is quicker but Hulse was better in the air.

If you want a reasonable comparison for these things you also have to consider the team around them. We play better football and create high quality scoring opportunities at a rate I've never seen from a United side. I don't like to take anything away from a player in the form of his life but we make the most of our strikers. On the other hand, Beattie's first time at the Lane was in a side that far less productive for its strikers (hence Sharp failing in it). Let's not forget Beattie's free kicks too.

Beattie was a Premiership player on his way down that was still too good for the Championship. He was even capped a few times.

Other than goals what exactly did Beattie bring to the table as an all round player? For me he tossed it off for 18 months and the amount of goals he scored masked the fact that he spent most of the 90 minutes doing jack shit. In my time watching United we've had some really good forwards, James Beattie shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as them imo.

It was no surprise to me that we went from play-off maybes up to him leaving, then the best team in the division 'til the end of that season (by best team I'm meaning we got the most points in the second half of the 08/09 season). If Beattie wouldn't have been injured in summer transfer window '08, we'd have sold him then and gone up in the top two, probably as champions imo

There was no all round play if you were a striker unless you count flick ons from the ball being hoofed up. Kevin Blackwell was a tactical genius.

Have to take issue in Clarke ‘lacking technique’ - some of his finishes have been absolutely top drawer and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone in recent times that had similar abilities.

His career issues have been well document but if Clarke had had the same focus and determination though out his career as he is proving he has now I’ve no doibt he’d have been a 15-20 goal premier league goal player.

Let’s face it... I’ve never seen a player get 7 goals in 2 home games.

Agree.
Beattie seemed to think the whole team should revolve around him and I don’t think he was a team player.
I’d love to know what Sharp thought about Beattie.
Remember a young Sharp always seemed to be doing all running, especially out onto the wings.
Remember when Sharp ever took a shot, Beattie would always complain that he should have passed to him.

Was going to say the same.
Almost all fans of every club Clarke has played for have said “Clarke has great technique”
It’s his consistency and temperament that has been in question throughout his career, not his quality.

We don't need that sort of player at the club.

I actually had a fellow Blade say to me today that we need to offload Sharp. So sadly Tyler it isn't just some folk on here that want to see the back of Billy.

When Sharp hits a dry spell of form some can't wait to get rid of him, people were saying the same last season when he missed a penalty and went a few games without a goal.

I've heard a few such sentiments from some individuals myself. They're scum as far as I'm concerned. Pathetic ingrate twats who I rank roughly on a par with Wednesdayites.

Clarke's better than Beattie was for us. So was Evans.

He doesn't lack technique per se, just compared to Beattie. Some of Beattie's hits for us were absolutely world class.

Agreed - beattie did score some crackers. Particularly remember some of the free kicks.

But then I think about the effortless technique of some of Clarke’s goals. The volleys against port vale and MK Dons last year and some of the finishes against hull were sublime. To me Leon is right up there

Not so sure - I seem to remember Sharp going on a barren run in 08 and one home match he had a shot crawl towards the line which Beattie should/could have tapped home but he left it so Sharp could score the goal and it ended up getting cleared :( - so there must have been some sort of camaraderie between them. Beattie always comes across as a decent bloke in interviews etc.
