Interesting that so many Wednesday fans have watched him manage in the Kaiserslautern derby. They really are cultured fans aren't they.

Also find it quite funny that they're all judging his ability as a manager with statements like 'has managed in front of 74k'. It seems attendances ARE important again after all.

I was at that game, squashed like a sardine in the crow's nest, peering through the grubby perspex of the north stand.

My only worry is that whenever I read the preview of a game and the fans think they've got no chance of a result (Norwich/Birmingham) they have!
I would take any kind of positive result Friday but if there has ever been a time to put a few past em it's now!

No, society has always had its share of ignorant people and there is no excuse for some of the abhorrent behaviour recently from a minority of Wednesday fans. However, the Wembley moment was special and from what I remember the Wednesday fans were superb towards Mel that day; simple as. Life is too short, so let's enjoy being the best team in Sheffield AND the best fans too.

The only derbies that spring to mind to compare it to are either Rome or Edinburgh (albeit the Rome comparison probably doesn't hold so well as Roma and Lazio will have an importance that extends beyond the confines of the city)

I'd have it down as the 2nd most intense derby after Glasgow which is next level. Its the only one really where one team hasn't consistently been dominant historically. You could make a case for Tottenham/Arsenal but both clubs have glory supporters from far and wide, plus fairly placid crowds, which takes the sting out of it


Matches between sides from neighbouring towns/cities don't count as derbies for for me, and those between clubs with 30+ miles distance between them (Man U/Liverpool, Barca/Real etc) certainly don't.

We're a strange one to place as we don't have any political/religious baggage and one team hasn't been massively dominant. The dislike just stems from being in the same city. As big as it is to us, it's not in the top 10 for european same city derbies.

It might be for some Sheffielders though and I dare say fans of other clubs will say their derby is the biggest. I wonder what makes a derby big?

Religion, politics, social differences, differences in levels of success, supposed slights, chances of disorder, attendance, historical context, etc. The top 5 stand out on their own for me; belgrade, glasgow, rome, athens & istanbul.

Another factor is distractions.

For example for 20 years Liverpool were too busy winning titles and cup finals to be bothered with their inter City Derby.
Their main rivals and the match they’ve always wanted to win is the Liverpool v Man Utd match, far more riding on it.

Both Sheffield clubs are relatively crap.
Neither has many distractions, so winning the derby match becomes one of the main target in a season.

Also there’s a greater equilibrium regards the 2 Sheffield teams than almost any other inter city derby.

For example how can Nottingham Forest fans have much concern over Notts County.
Same for Bristol City and Bristol Rovers and Stoke City with Port Vale.

how kaisersloughtown played when he was there has no relevance to championship football today
Hes had a 36 month break with a 5 game holiday, and will have no idea on the quality or lack of in any of the players

I think the same arguments can be made in favour of United vs Wednesday being a big derby.

There isn’t even the excuse of Christians vs Muslims, Catholics vs Protestants. It’s just that we plain don’t like them and vice versa!

I’ve been to the Sunderland Newcastle Derby. They were separated by a line of stewards. They were basically next to each other.

I expect there to be 4 dogs / 8 police office officers / 20 seats taped off with cameras etc.

From my knowledge there’s never been a massive brawl inside the ground it’s just the hatred for each other. I don’t see it anywhere else.
