a good read until I got to this........

“What I will say about the Wednesday fans that day is just how terrific they were to Mel. As he walked round Wembley, they all stood and applauded. It must have been a very poignant moment for Mel and his family.”

brought a tear to my eye first and then my thoughts passed to what the S6 scroats wanted to do with those stickers at Friday's game.

Is it just a case of society has got worse?

“People outside Sheffield don’t have a clue about what this derby means”

So very true. It is unique.

well we only have to look at previous manager. Carlos, he either underestimated how big the derby was or was just naive. because did carlos in an interview either pre match or day before say this was just another game. whereas We had a manager & a captain that knew derby like the back of his hand & rammed it down the squad throats every day for at least a week before

I've always said that ours is the fiercest inner city rivalry in England. Seriously what else comes close? Villa v Brum maybe? Spurs v Arsenal? Nah. Newcastle v Sunderland is practically 1 city, but not technically. The Merseyside derby is a bloody joke, the Manchester one is a lot fiercer, but really both are just classed as big and overhyped much like some of those that span 2 cities [Man U v Liverpool, Man U v Leeds, Forest v Derby for instance]
Pompey v Saints has some proper vitriol and I would probably rank it 2nd behind us. I would also give Chester v Wrexham a mention if we are going lower league.

The only one fiercer and bigger than ours in the UK is the Old Firm, nothing touches that.

Rivalry is usually bigger when you have 2 clubs of similiar stature who have similiar support, similiar histories etc.
The thing that makes the Sheffield rivalry special is that neither club has been able to dominate the other for any period.

This is different to Birmingham.
Villa have always been the much bigger club. The last time Birmingham City has bigger support was in 1975. Also there are 3 clubs in Birmingham so surely that would water down the AV- BC rivalry. Where do West Brom come into it?

In Manchester the red half have been so superior to the blue half for so long
That many Man Utd fans now say their biggest rivalry and most hostile match is Manchester United versus Liverpool.

I think the problem with the really big clubs is that they have non local admirers attending matches not diehard supporters. Also you get football tourists attending those games. So it’s much more difficult to get the hostility you find in the Steel City derbies.

Can't speak about Lukuhay as its guess work as to how he'll prepare, behave and react.

However, i can say one thing about German football having seen Wolfsburg v Hamburg and Union Berlin play is that its much like Italian football support. You have one guy leading the supporters in the songs or chants, usually with a megaphone or piping the noise around ground.

Its all very loud, but to me its very staged, which is fine. But to be honest its not an intimidating atmosphere as there is not the same spontaneity, there seemed to be less interaction with what was happening on the field than you'd get in England.

What i love about Blades games, big nights under the floodlights in particular is the hostile nature of the crowds. 2002/03 was a year that stood out for this and then it went too far at times(flares fired into away ends v Leeds and Pigs), but there was always a sense that the crowd was on edge, there was a true hostility in the crowd. The nervousness of the big game creates that edge and its reflected in the big roars from the crowd.

Piping the GCB at the start of the game, whilst being loud and impressive to hear, it can be a little staged some times. But you can always tell at the end of the GCB as to how the crowd is going to be with the roar after the 'Oooo' of the GCB.

On the face of it, I would actually say that Carlos was better prepared from his time in Turkey etc as to what a hostile atmosphere was!

I don't think Lukuhay will crumble because of the crowd, however, on the pitch he has to prepare his players better than Carlos did. I think that he'll have been filled in on what to expect in the game by the likes of Bullen and if David Hirst is around still, he'll make things clear. However, that's all irrelevant if the players aren't prepared. The same players that bottled it in Sept and many are the same that bottled it in the play offs.

We can absolutely, 100% be sure that Wilders players will not be phased by it.

Interesting that so many Wednesday fans have watched him manage in the Kaiserslautern derby. They really are cultured fans aren't they.

TBF, I don't think they meant that Jos managed a Kaiserslautern derby, they're referring to 1991 where, after beating Spora Luxembourg in the UEFA Cup, the pigs lost to 1st FC Kaiserslautern in October 1992 in the second-round, first leg. When Jaoa scored the equaliser back in September they played some 'anthem' (can't remember what it's called, one of these Euro-style 'Ode to Joy' bollocks) which they used to 'sing' back then. Who'd a thunk it? Wendy having to go back 26 years to their 'glory days'...

“At least with Trevor (Francis) and the Wednesday lads when I was involved, they knew exactly what it meant. You didn’t get them strolling through a derby. They got stuck in, just as we did.”

Maybe a bit of selective memory in that quote from Post #1. At the 1993 semi at Wembley, the camera zoomed in to Wendy's bench. Francis was on the front row and - sat behind him - was yet another of their Galacticos, substitute Chris Bart-Williams. With the game approaching it's climax, there was C B-W wearing shades and earphones and banging his head to whatever shite he was listening to. I thought at the time - and still think it applies - 'If I was your manager, I'd rip those fucking cans and shades from your fucking head.' If he had to come on, he wouldn't have had a clue about the pace of the game etc.

So it's not just recently that the pigs have been arrogant fuckers.

True, good points. If his quite telling how neither Sheffield side stays on top for long, something I tried repeatedly reminding Pigs about during our league 1 excile. Of course they were having none of it. Also a reason why us Blades should stay grounded.

Regarding West Brom by the way, I thougt they're main rivalry is with Wolves?

Also find it quite funny that they're all judging his ability as a manager with statements like 'has managed in front of 74k'. It seems attendances ARE important again after all.

They're fucking mental.
I think they talking about their 1990s meander into Europe. They lost.

It's not in Birmingham either.

Let's hope he shows the same fighting spirit his fellow countrymen did in June 1940,personally speaking,I don't trust any of them,Wednesday that is,not Dutch people

Anyone else get the irony of this....

"Union is smaller BUT they, the fans rebuilt the club

Not too many Berlin derbies cos of the division difference over the years

Whatever happened to Tennis Borussia Berlin? Anyone? Can't be arsed to google coss NFL on tv in a mo"

It's probably taken the think git more time to type the message than it would have to type the team in google (given he typed the team in the message).

I just hope to God that Kop remains standing after the big "Oooo"
It's not that big of an ask to stand for 90 minutes for the biggest game of the season.

Was DB's first derby the Zenith data systems cup in 89 ?
Not the most popular competition until that game. Big crowd and proper steel city derby. Full strength teams.
Pigs did us 3 - 2 Sheridan scoring goal of the month, just like opponents do now damnit, Deano got one of ours.
"Only United player we'd have is Tracey" said one porker.

"Shurrup nob'ee-erd"

Totally. I think Liverpool v Man Utd is more fierce than any Derby.

Ours is intensified because we've gone so long without one, but those two clubs really do hate each other despite playing at least twice a year for decades!

I have posted a link on another thread from Porktalk, which yesterday was 5 pages long where every Wednesday fan who had commented on the thread had condemned the Stickers, Song and that facebook pillock.
All clubs have idiots unfortunately including us.
