That's 'Reciprocal Overtime Scammers' to you and me. So that's Christmas expenses sorted for Durham Constabulary:

500 police officers drafted in to stop derby day violence with Sheffield United set to take on Sheffield Wednesday on a Friday night
  • Sheffield United host Sheffield Wednesday on Friday, January 12
  • South Yorkshire police made no objections were raised to the kick-off time
  • About 500 police officers will be deployed to keep order at Bramall Lane
  • There were fears the time would increase the risk of alcohol-fuelled disorder
About 500 police officers will be deployed to keep order after no objections were raised to a Friday night kick-off for the Sheffield derby a week on Friday.

Fears had been raised that the televised 7.45pm Championship clash at Bramall Lane would increase the risk of alcohol-fuelled disorder.

However, despite drafting in officers from other forces to help, police in South Yorkshire believe the late start will lower the risk of trouble by reducing time spent in the pub.

The last Sheffield derby, in September, kicked off on a Sunday lunchtime and police were dealing with football-related trouble across the city until 1am on Monday.

The number of officers on duty in Sheffield is likely to exceed the total patrolling Friday's Merseyside derby and is significantly higher than deployments for recent Manchester derbies.

A police source said: ‘The number of officers is surprisingly high but it is right that hosting matches on Friday nights lowers the risk of trouble.

‘What you tend to find with earlier kick-offs is that there is little trouble at the stadium but then people have the rest of the day to drink and reflect and you end up dealing with issues hours after matches have finished.’

United and Wednesday had not met for more than five years before the September clash at Hillsborough, which the visitors won 4-2.

Police made 11 arrests on the day and issued 35 dispersal orders to fans associated with risk groups. Several pubs closed early amid concerns they could be flashpoints for trouble.

Wednesday fans will be kept back after the game to reduce the risk of clashes outside the stadium. United currently sit in seventh place with managerless Wednesday down in 16th.

It is not the first time this season that South Yorkshire Police have turned to other forces for help.

When Wednesday entertained Leeds United at Hillsborough in October, officers from three other forces were drafted in to assist.

The stance by police in Sheffield on kick-off times is likely to be welcomed by Premier League clubs.

Friday night matches were introduced into the top flight last season and, despite early concerns, most have passed off without major incident.

The readers' comments are worth a look...

Are they shutting the pubs at 6pm like they said ages ago ?

That’s about 1 police officer for every 4 away fans.

Hugely over the top.

Can we keep this nugget for when they next switch one of our games with Leeds/Pigs/Millwall to fucking 11am on a Sunday.

Nowt to do with Sky then?

Besides the many who will have taken the day off months ago, 'early finish Fridays' are extremely commonplace. I'm 'working from home' that day, personally.

Love to know where they get their intelligence from...

That's because there's a high number of coppers in the force allergic to Prawns. We only eat greasy chip butties so there is less chance of them going on the sick.

I gather that some nasty men will be hanging around on Cricketers corner. I think they should hold the Wendyites back. Brook Hill roundabout should do it. For an hour. To make them miss the kick off and most of the first half.

Said it all along, after the disgraceful treatment of the Blades fans by SYPD and the stupid prices to pay to see a bit of the game at Hillsborough, I wouldn't have given them a single ticket for the game on Jan. 12. Or sell them only 3-match tickets (Bolton, pigs & Villa). £90.

Less time in the boozer hows that work then? a lot will either be finishing work early or have at least half the day off to go out and get well pissed before the game and I would imagine most night clubs will be open well into Saturday should anyone need a top up. It makes me think back to the Derby game that ended 2-2 which was a vile atmosphere with plenty that pissed they could hardly stand up, stewards getting shit kicked out of them, god knows what would have happened had Beattie not equalized with that free kick. SYP unfit for service since Orgreave.

We know its going to be bad as the police tweeted a warning a month or so ago saying that it was going to be bad.

And we know that it will be bad because the police will tell us afterwards that it was bad.

Moving a big game in the city to a Friday night, despite what the Police are trying to say here, is not a good idea.
- People will take the day or half day off work to get on the piss
- The game means that rush hour will be busier.
- Friday/ Saturday nights generally have a higher police presence than a Sunday at 12pm because people are out drinking anyway.
- Given the New year Stabbings, police have already said that they are increasing patrols of Bars, pubs and clubs

Whatever the police try to say about lunchtime kick offs they're much better to police than a friday night when people have been drinking.

Highlights:

Overtime is time and one third.
Time spent travelling to unusual places of work count as working time (no doubt three hours each way from Durham)

Unsocial hours allowance

- paid to a member of the federated ranks for every full hour worked by the member between 8pm and 6am. The allowance is paid at an hourly rate of 10% of the member’s hourly rate of pay.

Away from home overnight allowance £50

Hardship allowance £30

Did I miss any? Good that we will be paying them with our own money to guard us from ourselves.

I get the feeling no matter what time kick off is, there'll be "I can't believe they're allowing it to go ahead at this time!!!"

if Chansiri supplied the Taxis, every officer could drive 4 fans each to the game .... and back
Tbh I’m worried about child kidney punching opportunities. I reckon the bus load of orphans will each have their own allocated policeman.

I guess that may reduce the ratio of officers guarding the blind pensioner owls supporters branch though. So maybe it will even out.

Everyone I know is either having half/full day off work, or leaving early for next Friday. So I’m not sure where this less drinking theory is coming from.

I hope they don’t close all the pubs in town again afterwards. It’s a Friday night ffs

I was hoping they would be wanting to leave not long after Half Time when 6-0 down...oh well, they'll have to stay and suffer.

Never heard so much bull. Sky money talks, it’s a simple as that, Friday Night is many many more times High risk than 3pm on a Saturday due to the added booze fuelled morons who occupy the City centre every Friday night

Will we ever see a Saturday 3pm Sheffield derby again? I highly doubt it.

Yes, when the pigs play Sheffield FC in the conference north in 2021.

Exactly. We can’t even play the dingles in front of 1000 demented fucktards from Barnsley at a sensible time any more.

I've got to get back from fecking London that day
If I can get away by 15:00 then I might be able to get to the bloody game - If I can park
