£500K on the KOP

I appreciate this will go down like a lead balloon with a lot of the hard core Kop season ticket holders but as a south stand regular I'd thought I'd mention it anyway -

Took the Mrs who is a geordie and a big newcastle fan to the Sunderland game on boxing day so she could have a laugh at the Mackams' predicament and see Bramall lane for the first time. We didn't realise we could go til Xmas eve so we ended up on the Kop rather than where i normally sit on the south stand. First time I'd been on there for probably 5 years.

One thing she pointed out which has just bypassed me over the years is just how dated and grim it is by the bogs and food stands. It does all look a bit war time round there. I know the average Kop goer couldn't give a toss about the facilities but I do think £500k spent on revamping that whole area would go a long way and bring it in line with the quality of the rest of the ground. We should still keep the character of that area but just bring it up to date and a pleasure for our fans to visit. You see the money that gets spent everywhere else on the transfer fees and wages and this is literally a drop in the ocean in comparison to what all those other bills cost. What are peoples thoughts? Daft waste of money - better spent on one young player in the transfer market?

I love the BLUT. It's at a rake you'd never be allowed to do these days. My only complaint is it's a pisser to get out of when Plod put the barriers up on Bramall Lane.

Been saying it for a while mate. Our ST is in the Family Stand but when my boy can't go, I'll typically switch to the kop.

The difference in facilities is like Night and day! In this day and age the facilities aren't really fit for purpose. Don't think I've ever managed a half time beer and piss on the kop and made it back in time for the second half....

Kind of you to think of us. I'm still grateful for the novelty of the 'roof' on the Gents, which improved the quality of the half-time comfort break no end. If £500k gets us a decent player this month, I am happy to wait for the Premiership money to fund the next upgrade.

It is physically impossible due to the queues on the back deck, the steps and outside the old bogs. They've only had roofs on for a few years so we should think ourselves lucky for that.

Having said that, I get my beer before and I'd rather have the £500k on a striker, although I suspect both the striker and a decent Kop refurb would be may times that.

I would agree if we didn’t have plans in place to massively improve the Kop facilities when promoted.

So for me if we don’t think we’ll return to the PL in the next 10 to 15 years then I would spend £500K upgrading the facilities
But I’m sure the owners believe it’s only a matter of time before we reach the PL, so they’re going to wait.

Once back in the PL there will be all kinds of stadium improvements and spring cleaning done.

Joking aside, I agree with the OP. I think even a small short-term upgrade could be done at a relatively small cost and go a long way. Regarding drink, they ought to bring back those guys with the backpacks of bottled beer. Worked a treat during the Premier League season when I was a Kop low-life.

From my seat I just have enough time to get to the bogs for a half time piss and usually just get back to my seat in time to see the 2nd half kick off. I'm usually chilled out too after pushing my way through all the weed smokers, no time to get another pint or a pie without missing some action, saves me £7 quid that does.
