Some were tiny holes in the ground to reach easily mined surface seams, but these were soon worked out. The proper 'pits' were all to the South East of the City and IIRC one at Woodhouse was still going into the 80s. Obviously slightly further afield, Kivvo, Dinno, Maltby, Thurcroft, Shireoaks, Manton, Cresswell kept going into the 90s until Thatcher and MacGregor achieved their masterplan.

Might still be of relevance if property in the area is being bought/sold :(

Nice, always wanted a Cortina. My Dad once had a Mark 3 Estate, white with the vinyl roof.

You're spot on about that. Well done.

I went back and dug out the photo's and answered my own question about the Skoda 100 v Renault 10. Yes, it's definitely a Renault 10 for the reasons you've mentioned and I mentioned too in the photos.

And I think you're right about the Triumph 2000 as well. Oh well! I got one out of three! ;)

(And I thought I knew about cars! Must get my bloody eyes tested!)

Which is pretty much what I said in the first place.

Nope. But close.

The cars in the top photo are (possibly) a Triumph 2000 as you say, although it could also be a Triumph Dolomite, it's hard to tell. It is a Ford Cortina for sure, but it's the Mk 2 not the Mk 3. And the other car, the one passing Timpson's, is a Skoda.

The Skoda. Bert passed his driving test in one of those at Dodd Street test centre.

Those top two pictures especially evoke some good childhood memories for me. Getting taken to Hagenbachs for a Gingerbread man, sometimes going to the Cafe up on the Gallery. Getting a toy from the market if I was good. Cheers LS26BLADE I enjoyed that.

Now, where the fuck did it all go wrong!!! ;)

Hopkinsons Toy Shop?

Hopkinsons Toy Shop?

I can't remember the name Shaun, but very possibly. I think there might have been a couple of toy places in the market? Another place I'd get a toy from was just up the road at Woolco (think it's a Wilkinson's now?)

Also the visits to Santa's Grotto in the old Co op.

Too young for Wilson Gumperts then!

Turner's was another Toy store in there. Think there was another one as well, in the middle of the upper floor.

Child of the 70's so possibly, I've heard the name before though.

Wilson Gumperts was in Fitzalan Square wasn’t it? I think it became part of Redgates but my memory might be playing tricks.

Yes. Didn't mean it was in the market. Was eventually owned by Redgates.

Redgates, now there was a shop.

A few years ago, when Ms Crab worked at Little Chef head office, one of the suppliers she dealt with was hoping to resurrect the brand. Not sure if anything ever came of it sadly.
