£5m should not be out of our reach considering our position and the prize on offer. Doubt he would smash the wage structure either, seems just the type of lad to fit in here as well. We'll see how serious the Prince & McCabe are in January, Wilder's done his bit now they need to do theirs.

Can't see that sort of money spent on one player. Nor can I see there being any risk of upsetting the dressing room over wage demands.

The club may spend a few bob, but imo it will be spread over a number of players. McCabe will still be expecting CW and AK to perform miracles in the transfer market

Its the wages that worry me. I hear people saying we should spend big on the Coutts replacement but if you buy big you'll have to pay big, and togetherness is our biggest strength right now.

Then McCabe and Prince are playing a dangerous game, back him with proper funds.

Personally I don't think £5m would be enough.

How much do you think we should go up to?

Great player but an unrealistic target as things stand. He's contracted for another 2.5 years and if, on the off-chance, Brentford would be willing to deal, they'd want closer to £10m. Possibly more of a target in summer should Utd manage to achieve the impossible.

I don't think they'd sell Woods for less than £7m.

They got about that for Andre Gray a couple of years ago and fees have only inflated since.

On the flip side they sold Jota for 6m and Deen for 1.5m

Sadly I can't see this happening, certainly not in January as an immediate Coutts replacement - as much as I 100% think he would be a great signing, think Brentford would be wanting upwards of 7million and given we were bidding 500k for Leonard (allegedly) - I can't see us upping our bids by such a significant amount. Cracking player though.

I really wouldn’t be surprised if this comes off. He’s the perfect replacement for Coutts. Brentford have form for selling their players of late and maybe if we were 10th the board wouldn’t back Wilder but we are knocking on the door and not just keep pace but setting it too..

He clubs mentioned who may also be interested are all say below us..

For football reasons, we're now the most attractive proposition to this type of midfielder out of all the Championship clubs bar none.

Likely starting role, good chance of promotion, winning mentality, a great system and playing a relatively unrestricted role within it. Then there's our big crowds and lovely desso. It's the perfect setup for a player to come into and perform and develop.

The least it does is put us in a great position for top quality loans.

I'm sure Woods would love to sign for us for football reasons, but it probably wouldn't stack up financially for him.

Both Brighton and Burnley linked to him in today' Evening Standard so if true we've no chance

If we carry on as we are I think Wilder will have a blank cheque book come January to bring in whoever he sees fit. and by blank cheque book I don't mean football manager type nonsense but if he says I need £3m for Woods and and Sinclair on loan I cannot see the club saying no, he has most certainly earned their trust.

No way woods would cost less than £8m

Offer him a greasy chip butty and that should do the trick.

Know what you mean but its the reality of today's game. If they want him they can afford the fee and won' balk at paying him 25k+ a week.

It could have been Bournemouth being linked and that would have depressed you even more !

Woods has scored 4 goals in his career in nearly 200 games and he doesn’t directly assist many goals either, now I know that’s not his job in essence and he is a very good player who I want us to sign but no player of his nature in the Championship playing for a club with one of the lowest budgets in the division will be going for anywhere near what they got for Jota, £4M at the most and we should go all out to bring him here.

Oh, and he likes red and white. ;)

Not many have mentioned John Swift as an alternative.

Younger, cheaper and probably easier to land.

Don't think so, Reading are a club who spent £7m on Sone Aluko. They're richer than Brentford. It would probably take over £10m.

Laughing at some of these fees. Woods will be easy north of £6m, Woods will be closer to £8m, probably more.

Agreed it would take more than £6mil to get him and I doubt Brentford are in a hurry to sell more of their best players in January.

Sadly Woods is one of those shoulda, coulda but didn't transfers. Its too late to go and get him now.

If we stick around the top end of the table, we will be in a strong position.

I don't see us getting him, but if Derby in 14th offered you 25k a week, and the Blades in 3rd offered you 14k, with the chance to double your earnings within five months, and be a Premier League player, who would you go for?

Derby.

Someone needs to explain to me why a player who doesn’t score or assist and hasn’t played in a higher league than the championship is worth £8M, now that is laughable.

I think it is explained by what Wednesday have pissed away on players.
