The Blades Golden triangle (Coutts, Fleck & Duffy) - missing v QPR

I am away at the moment about 1 hour North of what the French call the golden triangle in the Dordogne (Perigeaux, Bergerac & Sarlat). I wanted to watch (and pay) via ifollow, but watched it on a social media site instead due to problems with ifollow.

Will post about my ifollow experiences in the ifollow post later.

The Blades too have a golden triangle – they are Coutts, Fleck & Duffy and for me our “heartbeat” was missing last night v QPR even though Coutts played and did OK.

OK, so Fleck was enforced with suspension, but why rest a 2nd part of it with Duffy. Even though we had 62% possession, we didn’t do half as much as we could have. I understand squad rotation but was it really necessary for this game or Hull as ALL championship teams have another two weeks without a game with the 3rd international break after the Hull game. Our management team shouldn’t be above opinion and there were just too many changes – especially with the break approaching and in the key midfield area. QPR got into the game early and then had something to hold onto for the rest.

In no way am I cross, just disappointed that we didn’t perform as we have in previous games. I didn’t think we deserved to lose either – a draw would have been totally fair. QPR had chances and so did we as we got behind them plenty of times. The other question is whether Brooks is a no 10 – his best games appear to be up top. We just seemed to miss Duffy’s great ability of finding space between the lines, especially in away games when home teams look to get forward more. Brooks might learn that ability, Duffy has it in abundance at the moment.

We need to find a solution to our 3 midfield generals – not having two last night caused us problems, partly of our own making with rotation.

Will be flabbergasted if they all don’t start v Hull on Saturday – think we all expect a much more cohesive performance and put Hull to the sword – someone is due one and they are hardly in any form although we must be wary of an injured tiger.

I also expect nothing less than 4 wins in November, playing our A team if fitness allows.

I think it's about the keeping spirit going and demonstrating that every member of the squad has a contribution to make and is expected to be ready to perform when called upon and trusted to do so. To effectively achieve that every player needs meaningful playing time topped up every so often. Our all action game also tends to take it's toll when we have 3 games in 8 days.

I miss Jake Wright more than anybody. Vickers is very much still learning and seems to be putting our players out of the game one by one.

All players who came in with the exception of Brooks didn't show enough to warrant starting against Hull. Fleck was missed terribly, Im not a fan of Lundstram just don't know what he adds to the team. I thought Donaldson would have played a lot better so he can try and get himself back in the starting 11. Unfortunately I don't think Duffy has it in him fitness wise to play as regularly as everyone would like. Can see what you mean about the trio though a lot of misplaced passes today and not enough battling.

Back to full strength on Saturday in midfield and up front. Someone's due a proper thrashing, and Hull leak goals. Exactly the type of game we need.

QPR are a strong,direct and physical side,Wilder watched them beat Wolves and chose a team to combat this.I think Fleck would have played if he had not been suspended and this would have helped,but they did a job on us and a fluke goal settled it.

We struggle against the more physical teams such as Norwich and Cardiff.

regarding Duffy the fitness and recovery what was seen in training and the ‘numbers’ will no doubt play a part, We’re aiming to Keep players at their peak for a 46 game season

But the manager also has faith in other players

I agree on the Fleck, coutts and Duffy partnership being top class but they’ve also had more than a season together.

The problem we have is that these players are human. We need them to also work with other midfielders as we will need them all throughout the season.

Same with the strikers.

If we have to drop Duffy 1 in every 4 games and/or have a suspension for Coutts or Fleck every so often it’s not the worst thing to keep them fresh all season. We are winning the majority when they do play so happy with that.

As WWF says it would be nice if the replacements were up to scratch but that’s a luxury we can’t afford.

We really missed Fleck, he draws JOC down the wing to overlap, I think because Lundstram is less attacking he wasn't as confident leaving his post because we might lose the ball in midfield which is pretty rare usually, that meant we had very few balls in the box/ crosses compared to past games.

Lundstram is fine as a Diet Coutts but he struggles as a Fleck substitute because he can't maraud forward like Fleck does, not that that is bad, Lundstram is decent, that's just not his role, it'd be like playing Moore as a CF.

Lundstram looked uncomfortable which Coutts saw and that changed his game also which didn't help us.

Basically we were weak in midfield which is absolutely not us this season, which meant Brooks did little (made a great pass for I think Leon though) because he needs a solid midfield behind him I think to give him the license to run at people, in case he loses the ball.

We usually go triangle mad on the wings and it just didn't happen last night, always an open pass in a dangerous area usually with Duffy floating around and JOC, Bash, Stevens, Baldock, Fleck on the ball or waiting to receive. Just didn't work last night.

If I were to be super critical I'd say since our game is based on bossing midfield, there were too many changes to the core of it, with Fleck forced out, maybe Duffy out too altered our core too much, but then again Duffy is human not a machine and Wilder should be able to make changes without us starting to play like a different team.

We still had some good performances in there though, Leon did well, Brooks was good but didn't have much opportunity.

We're still third in the table and we only lost one nil but I'll be glad when we have all three in against Hull.

Our January purchases have to include a proper Fleck backup I think.

Coutts wasn't ok yesterday, he was very poor and Lundstram played better, although it's not cool to say that on here.

We can cope for a game or two without Coutts but not Fleck, he's the heartbeat of the team and our most important player.
Coutts will benefit hugely from having JF and Duffy alongside him on saturday and we'll be back to our best.

Fair points on this thread IMO. Duffy/Fleck/Coutts are the key to our success and when they dont play we arent as successful.

There we go. It's a marathon not a sprint and it's a squad not a first team exclusively.
