This is a bit of a soft thread, but just wanted to say this, because it's nice to know we've got such good blokes playing for the club.

And, Paul Coutts is undoubtedly a good bloke. Met him today up at the Whirlow Hall Farm Fayre. Walking round in full Blades training kit (or so it looked) - because United are sponsoring the farm through the community outreach programme or some such. Was there with (at least) either his or his partner/wife's mum and one of his twin girls. Very friendly, happy to chat to me and my little one (who went a bit shy, but still pointed to the United badge to say "Daddy football badge...") and seemed very relaxed and like he was enjoying life.

Congratulated him on the win at Sunderland, told him it was good to be enjoying the footy again after a rough few years, which he agreed with.

All in all a very enjoyable experience. Thanks for making my day Couttsy.

So not only a top quality midfielder playing some great stuff, but seemingly a top fella to boot.

Pure class on the pitch and off it by the sounds of it.

I love watching Coutts play, he was superb yesterday
 
This is yet another tick for Wilder and Knill's method. Of course they want good players but they also want good people who understand and connect with the fanbase. So refreshing in an age when footballers are becoming increasingly distant and detached in the realm of superstardom.

Donaldson is the latest example who exemplifies the type of player they want. Hard working and talented but incredibly grounded. Seriously, a few interviews in and you can tell he is a really nice bloke. Brum fans say the same.
 
I guess it depends on their football upbringing.

Lauded as a superstar and treated like one from being a teenager.....usually a spoiled brat and a twat.
Treated a bit harsher, grown up and settled with a family.....likely a decent bloke who appreciates where they are and what they have.

Hope he's with us til he decides to call it a day.

I was bollocksed too. Had just pushed my Gran's wheelchair up the hill in the bottom field - had a joke with him about it being decent training!

He kopped sight of my Granddad's United necklace that I inherited when he passed, told me he was looking for a similar one himself - told him he was out of luck as it was a custom job that's best part of 50 years old!

It really was a genuinely enjoyable experience. Absolutely made my day. Bloke is already a legend in my eyes because of his playing.

True class.

Yes I met him too and really nice bloke. Had my photo taken with him. Chuffed to bits. Billy was also there and got photo with him as well. V chuffed. Think Couttsey was there through the sponsorship and Billy came to support him but did not stay that long. Both great ambassadors for the club and great role models.

I saw Billy and said hello, but he seemed a bit less impressed with it - possibly because he wasn't there "officially" but was with his kids and his dad on a family day out, and possibly for personal reasons which I won't be expounding on.

I was tempted to try to get the photo with Couttsy, but decided against it in the end. I'd've wanted my little girl to be in the picture too but she takes a few minutes to warm up to people and I didn't want to either monopolise his time, or have my girl upset and generally making things less pleasant for all involved.

Mentioned some players that he's surprised don't start more often, such as Carruthers. Samir is one of the more technical players and has bags of ability but, for some reason, Duffy just works better with him and Flecky. He reckons it's experience and Duffy's off the ball work that is the difference, but thinks Samir will deffo come good at some point.

I didn't manage to grab Billy for a word but Couttsy is a top lad and a nice bloke. I'm a fan."

Doesn't this just underline how competition for places means that each player needs to be in that 'zone' all the time?

Anyone who thinks they can turn their effort on and off like a bulb is mistaken. The trainers and managers will take note and have a word with those who appear to let their standards slip. It's really all about each player and what they want - do they have the desire to succeed? Can they battle through times when it seems like there's no light at the end of the tunnel? As we've all seen, an opportunity can happen in an instant, and if you're not tuned in that chance will go to someone else. It won't matter if they're not quite as good technically, but if they've shown exactly what the manager wants from the moment they arrive at work then it's not rocket science.

By signing for a club there's an investment of trust from both sides. A player has to do his bit to ensure he's noticed, and then continue to impress. A tough game is professional football, but one all of us supporters would love the opportunity to take part in. So personally I've little sympathy with any player who throws away the opportunity he's been handed.
 



I play 11-a-side on Sunday's and actually model my game on Coutts's. Since watching Coutts, Fleck and Duffy play together I have infact improved as a player no word of a lie.

Yeah, but the fact he is even getting regular starts at a level far higher than we were at the time he moved, and are still now, means he must have something about him.

By the sounds of that game, I don't think he was the only one running round having a mare.
