Brooks For Wales

I suspect he hasn't been called up to the England under 21 side because he hasn't played enough minutes for us at the start of this season. If he breaks in to the side and does well then I'd suspect an England under 21 call up won't be far behind.

I imagine he thought that if he isn't going to get called up after Toulon then fuck 'em. Don't blame him.

He has a potentially easier and quicker path to international football with Wales. Impress in the Championship over the next few months and it's possible he might get a senior call-up before the season finishes – the likelihood of that happening with England this season is virtually zero.

Smart move in my opinion. Won't be a popular opinion but I think he is highly unlikely to ever reach England quality and therefore has more chance of playing international football with Wales.

I think with us being in L1 for so many years we have forgotten what true England quality looks like. Brooks has potential to be a very tidy player, but when you recognise that Dele Alli is only a few months older than him, it might make you realise how far away Brooks is, in real terms.

In his position alone, there are plenty of players under 25 that are way ahead of him (Redmond, Rashford, Murphy, Ali, Oxlaid-Chaimberlain) and really there quite a few more, I think it makes perfect sense from his point of view.
Nothing is ever good enough Bladeswise in your opinion is it.

This to me is a sign that he's got the right attitude. He clearly wants to play and has a realistic enough grasp of his current standing and ability to know he is some way down the pecking order for England U21s. Plus at the moment Wales have a decent set up.

I'd be more concerned if he was binning off an U21 call up because he thought he deserves a better offer.

It's a big step up to under 21 level though.

There is only one player from the Toulon tournament who has been called up to the under 21 side this time around and that's Joe Worrall who has started every game this season for Forest.

Competition for places in the England set up is far greater than Wales.

He was originally in the Welsh youth set up until pinched by England a few years back wasn't he? I think it is possible to switch between different team you qualify for at the youth level, it's only once you've played for the full team that you can't switch.

Unless you throw a double six to start.

No substance behind that. Feel I have a reasoned, balanced view there.

But no, sorry, what some people want is 'fuck Dele Alli, Brooks is miles better. Already worth 10 million and that's always climbing' blah blah bladey shite.

It's not about being good enough it's about being reasoned, not delusional and seeing the game through tinted glasses. He's a good player, why do we always have to apply hyperbole to it? Not every good young player we have has to be future England star, they can just have potential to be good players, which is compliment enough without going over the top, surely, do you think he'll be as good as dele Ali in a year? I'd assume not.

Potential in the England squad never amounts to anything so why not play for Wales. If both teams are going to do shit all in terms of trophies, play for Wales. You'll get a game, you'll be a hero if you qualify for a competition, and there's less pressure.

When I used to go track, every 4 years guys used to find a Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish ancestor so they could do the Commonwealth Games.

It's a career and business to these guys. Feeling nationalistic and/or kissing the badge is superceeded by the commercial benefit of being a regular international and the rewards of playing in a major tournament.

Good luck to the lad!

Does this mean we'll lose him for games? I'm sure we don't have enough internationals to postpone games.

I can't see it but he may have been told he is short of a England U21 call

As for the age limit for switching nations etc there isn't one. Diego Costa has caps for both Spain and Brazil, Thiago Motta both Brazil and Italy and didn't Platini play for Kuwait too?? Should have known back then that he had a "price" the rule is none competitive appearance think Costa'a only Brazil Capps were friendlies

The Premier League and Championship have international breaks. Only League one and two play on through these think U21s tend to fall into the same break don't they?

I'm sure that if he played for a 'fashionable' club once he's moved, England honours won't be far behind. See Maguire, Harry.

Plenty of premiership clubs youngsters get called up to the u21s without playing any senior football.

Whoever scouts for the England set up just stays in the circles of the 6 top clubs youth academies and only in exceptional circumstances they look elsewhere.

Closed shop.

England have an awful set up. It's farcical how the manager gets appointed so I can fully understand Brooks choosing Wales U21's

Look at the spirit which they had at the last tournament and that of England. England pick the older players who've never done it. Wales pick the players bang in form that want to do well

This makes no sense. He was Englands player of the tournament at Toulon. Doesnt this exclude him from England duty going forward?

Think you can play At all levels and still switch. Unless you have a FULL cap. Carl Jenkinson played at all levels for Finland but was then capped by England

Maguire was never going to get an England call up whilst playing in League 1.

This.

Can you imagine Gareth Southgate giving a tub thumping half time team talk?

No neither can I.

The only thing I can see Southgate thumping is his own thigh in exasperation when he sees the price of quinoa go up at his local Waitrose!

Plus in Bale and arguably Ramsey, Wales have almost two world class players whereas England (r'Kyle aside) don't have any...

I'd be backing the Wales programme to outperform the English one over the next 5-10 years. They already did much better than we did at the Euros...

I can only imagine Southgate failing and then keeping his job because he's the dull choice which suits the fa

There really is no passion in the England squad anymore

Gets the nod again in Portugal this evening – hopefully with the same result.

I think he's made the right move. He'll get more opportunities, enjoy it more and actually appreciated. England squad must be a disconnected depressive bunch to be amongst.

Ben Woodburn is getting rave reports after coming on as sub for Wales over the weekend, and he's only 17.
If you're anywhere near half decent, you'll get your chance with Chris Coleman ..so go for it Brooky !

You think Ramsey is better than Lallana or Alli?

Of course the Wales under 21 manager would have been a selling point for me and I'm sure Brooks as well. Also he still lives in Sheffield. I speak to him now and again, he will always chat footy.
