Thoughts on the game today

Great performance? Really?

Barnsley were piss poor and will go down, today was not a championship quality affair it was like a league one game.

Don't let this result fool you, we seriously lack pace and directness and are going to come unstuck again against the better sides playing like we did today.

Our play is far far too slow and predictable for this level, it worked today but won't against the better sides. Need major reinforcements bringing in.

I think it was a good performance can't take that away from the team. But I agree the opposition were terrible, it was like last season against a top League One side.

I can't agree when people are saying that Wright and Duffy made a big difference because had Stearman and Samir both played, the performance would have been at a similar level.

Our two home matches have been against a poor Barnsley and Brentford who are bottom with one point. If we put a good performance against Derby then I'll believe we will do well this season. At the moment I still feel we are 3 or 4 players away from being a comfortable mid table team.

Sounds a daft thing to say but it was good to score after dominating the play for the first 17 minutes. Before the goal we'd had a few decent chances and it was important to capitalise psychologically. Funnily enough I thought the sendings offs actually helped us more than them. They lost a big player for them and had to re-organise from a goal behind, whereas we didn't have to really as we weren't chasing the game.

Duffy was excellent and assume he came off because he hasn't had much game time, his link play and ability to make space for others is superb. I thought both Fleck and Freeman had much better games. We just needed that 2nd goal again to kill the game off. Full marks to the defenders though, can anyone really say that Stearman is better than Wright? Jake just did his usual effective thing.

Stearman hasn't put a foot wrong. He's better than Wright. Sorry, I know that doesn't suit the party line. Perhaps we can let Tufty know by booing Stearman if he's selected ahead of our favourite?

Duffy was good and I think he offers a better link-up option than Samir - which seemed to suit today's game.

Also, not seen it mentioned yet but I thought Freeman had really good game.
Freeman was better in the second half, but if we played a back four probably wouldn`t get a game. His defensive qualities leave a lot to be desired. He often either stands off watching or dives in.

firstly Barnsley are shit and I expect them to be relegated. I'm sure Roy's view from will be them blaming the ref but we were far better before and after the sending off.

Clarke isn't quick enough in movement and thought, at least at the moment, he may grow into the league but I'm not sure.

Fucking stupid sending off as well. Cheds not match fit so it leaves us with a problem, I guess lavery will come in.

Duffy was outstanding motm.

Brooks looks exciting but not the finished article by any means.

Fucking lines men are shit in this league, more incorrect offsides.

Coutts and fleck played well and no complaints from the defence, Stevens slightly iffy in possession but that's nit picking.

Should have finished them off and we dropped deep at the end again despite wilders protestations

Really important game to win and I'm going the enjoy watching the results coming in.

Bang on If felt like we made hard work of it at times - good all round performance but I do t think we will see many teams come to the Lane and do so little.
Makes our start look reasonable, pretty much what we should have expected looking at the fixtures so far.

First time I've seen ched, since the "not bad for a one man team" Chesterfield match.

He needs to relax.

One thing we can put to bed is the notion that this division is La Liga. If Brentford & Barnsley are average sides in this league then we are above average.

My thought were that Barnsley approached the game like a league 1 side. They thought they could sit back, soak up the pressure then hit us on the break. They under estimated and didn't realise that if you give us the initiative we are a really good team.

We have attacking fullbacks that aren't great at defending and we have a midfield that are great in possession but aren't the most physically strong players to break up play when out of possession.

Today was typical of so many matches in league 1 where teams just sit back.
Thought Duffy was a real key player, he seems to pop up all over the place, accepting a ball, creating space and making the midfield like up as a better unit. Also was impressed with Brooks confidence to just run at their defence, he certainly looks a talent.

Actually I thought Brentford played like a Spanish La Liga side, much more technical and looking better than us, but they were guilty of overplaying, very tippy tappy trying to walk the ball into the net meaning they didn't create than many clear chances.
Today Barnsley were similiar to several teams we played in league 1 last season and based on that display that's where they're heading, they were so poor.

total speculation

To be honest, not sure why Ched is getting the nod over Lavery. Hasn't done anything that I've seen to merit the preference from the bench. Think maybe Wilder's investing in his need to prove something. Lot of effort, but not a lot to show so far. I think maybe Lavery would be a better option still.
Tin hat on.

Might give lavery a kick up the arse?

No tin hat needed. Lavery isn't good enough but at the moment he's a better option to Evans who is way off the pace.

Much of the decision is down to the recent Walsall match.
Ched did more in 30 minutes than what Lavery did in 60 minutes.
Ched looked easily the better striker.
Think Lavery can be a good option off the bench though.

Barnsley played defensively and gave the ball away cheaply. They were very poor and we defended well, thwarting them at every opportunity. I listened to their fans as they marched to the ground calling Sheffield a shit hole, the usual pathetic chant about Ched and their pathetic abuse about us as dee dahs so it was karma to see us match them at every turn

of course it is speculation.. samir wasn't on the pitch .. you can't say but., but.. but and quote it as fact!

How was I quoting it as fact? That's a ridiculous comment to make, it's clearly an opinion.

He defended very well today; as did Edna. Sometimes it's better to watch the game rather than restate entrenched theories.

Thought Stevens was phenomenal today. When Clarke went it wasn't easy to get bodies close enough to Sharp and then Evans but he just never stopped bombing on. What an engine the guy has. Pipped Duffy, Coutts, JOC and Wright for MoM in my opinion
I agree, I thought Stevens and Freeman had good games today at both ends of the pitch.
Late on in the game Freeman got upended in front of their goal and seconds later was back in our box making two crucial interceptions.

Lavery played his way out of the side at Walsall tbh - was pretty poor.

Ched came on at boro and Cardiff and did more alright - probably looked more threatening than Clarke and Sharp had.

We were the far better side. No gripes from me on any player other than I wish Basham would learn to head the ball more than a couple of yards. I thought Coutts, Fleck and Duffy controlled things in midfield until we dropped back the last ten minutes.

Enda played well, and creates and uses space well too. My comments about Freeman are my own observations over time, and not the regurgitation of anyone else`s theories. I do watch watch the game; your implication that I don`t does you no credit.

Should've won 3-0, didn't, who cares 1-0 great for me, yeah need a couple of players, 6 pts from 4 games..me happy UTB

good win today to calm the nerves creeping in. even more when you look at fixtures & 3pts were hugely vital because i didnt our fancy our chances v derby next Saturday with ton of money theyve spent over the last few years. i didnt want to be going into the international break likely no win in 4 on 3pts in relegation zone. so we can now go into derby as a "bonus" game

it shouldve been more comfortable but for 2/3 stunning saves by there Goalie & during the 2nd half we were getting too arsenal some pretty football with nice movement with little end product. i thought duffy coming in for carruthers was excellent. easily deserved Man Of the Match involved in everything offensive. The defence at times still had time were i was anxious but on whole much better even with big loss of stearman. Barnsley were poor but i think organisation wright brings always helps

cant complain about clarke sending off because it was the right decision i can understand why he did it espically heat of the moment & all that, as ill discipline after he was provoked but you cant (from where I was) grab anyone by throat. i knew a red was coming straight away

Barnsley poor, Fleck and Wright brilliant. Freeman I though was poor in the first half, I don't know if he is carrying a knock but It seemed to me like he was playing bit half harted. Leon played well until his silliness, although distribution was poor but think we need better for the Champ, give Billy the service and he will pop up n the right place and finish.

My thoughts were that we battered them and it should have been more than 1-0. As other posters have said - if Sharp gets chances in the box, he will score. He needs service and players around him to make the chances happen. But his finding the back of the net has never been in doubt for me.

Agree on Brookes - first time I've seen him and he clearly has talent. Really unlucky to not get his first league goal for us today.
