I know Wilder has mentioned wanting to bring 1 or 2 up-top in.

With Ched seemingly a way off match fitness and Hanson unlikely to be more than a bit player, that leaves us with Sharp, Clarke and Lavery. The latter has still not really put in a run of 90 minute performances and seems to get a fair few niggles.

With all the talk of a CM and/or a CB coming in, there's been little about strikers.

It's just over two weeks until the season starts, and for me the next signing needs to be a striker. Sharp and Clarke can be static together up-top. It's going to be more difficult to create chances this season and the strikers need to do more. I know we went with one up front second half tonight, but not really a viable option for me with our personnel. If we can get someone in this week, it gives him a couple of weeks with the squad before the season starts.

Given the wage structure, I think it's going to be the trickiest position to fill.

It doesn't matter who the next signing is as long as our team is ready for the start of the season.

If CW thinks 1 up front with 2 in behind I think it's also viable. Chelsea and Tottenham do it regular too.

Not too sure what your trying to get at, CW said he wants 1 or 2 up top. So he's clearly looking. This topic basically says that?

Brooks played as a back up striker so we have 6 players to fill 2 positions ,all have qualities ,we just have to find the best pairing. Sharp/Clarke doesn't have enough movement ,Hanson has better movement than either of them. We will mix and match all of them in different games though ,we don't have to find 2 and stick with them.

I thought there rumours we were looking at one or two strikers....or was it that man in't pub again?

Agree about a concern regards the forwards, most of them have good potential but we don't know how they'll perform.

There's only Sharp who is tried and tested Championship quality but he lacks pace and physicality
And needs the ball playing directly to his feet, set him up and he invariably scores
If the midfielders struggle to set him up then expect Sharp to struggle, like he did under Blackwell.

I would imagine Wilder will have one eye on some highly rated loanees.
Bristol City managed to persuade Chelsea to let Tammy Abraham join them on loan.

Just being reading an article on Manchester United's James Wilson.

A young pacey striker who recently has lost his way a little. I could see him being a target on a loan towards the latter end of the window.

He was meant to be a goal scoring machine, but did he pick up a bad injury a couple of years back? I remember there was talk of him playing at the start of last season but I think Rashford jumped in front of him.

Harry Kane
Diego Costa
Billy Sharp

I'm basically saying that I think it's imperative to get someone in asap so they can get a couple of weeks pre-season work in with us.

Last season I think it was, had his loan cut short at Derby.

Sharp and Clarke, more often than not, won't offer enough pace or movement at Championship level.

Lavery is an interesting player and prospect, but he needs to brush up on the basics, if he can do that we've got a potentially big player but we can't wait forever.

I've said a few times that our best bet might be to go with 2 attacking midfielders supporting one striker. We have one very suitable attacking midfielder in Brooks, and maybe Lavery or Thomas could play opposite him. But one thing we lack is someone who can play the lone role up front.

If we're to sign a striker it's difficult to know what to go for, because although someone who can play the lone role would be ideal, I feel we're in equal need of someone with pace and the ability to produce from nothing.

The best solution would perhaps be to sign another attacking midfielder with pace and flair and then try to get a centre forward who can play the lone role effectively.

Do some research.

Lavery in championship. - 6 goals in 34
James Wilson in champ - 5 goals in 29

Not a great deal between them, but because we own one we don't believe him to be as good.

Have to be honest this striker thing really does annoy me a bit. Yes we and every other team in the league wants better more proven strikers.

Can anyone produce me the name of 2 Strikers we should sign! Bit of google search to prove they are better than what we have. Also that would roughly fit in our budget.

What fast as fuck striker who'll bag goals at Championship level could we get for our default 500k offer?

Please quote a post by me where I have said I don't rate Lavery. I feel once the season gets under way & should we struggle up top then we may look for another option, probably a loan one & Wilson was merely a suggestion.

Why look for another option when you already have that option? Lavery is our pacey striker and you want us to loan James Wilson?

I'll highlight it this time for you seen as you didn't read the post properly, I said should we struggle for goals when the season begins with our current batch of forwards then we may look at another option.

Coutts / Freeman - on their way out last summer

Done - on his way out this summer

I will underline what you actually said. Instead of highlighting things you didn't originally say.

Done - on his way out this summer

Coutts/Freeman – listed within 1 week of Wilder joining.

Done – has had the benefit of showing his talents for an entire year.

Wilder may have changed his initial views based on a few months when he first joined, but I imagine he's fairly confident in his views after a full year. I don't expect a single player listed at the start of summer to be with us come the end of the window.

We already have 6 strikers : Billy - failed at this level 3 years ago with Dirty Weeds and will spend the coming season fighting with the CB trying to get near the ball ; Ched - failed at this level 6 years ago and now basically a crock after a full pre-season ; Hanson - a big useful L1 target man ; Clarke - an enigma ; Lavery - returning from a serious knee injury ; Done - on transfer list (possibly as a wing-back ?).

CW has boxed himself into a corner with the long contracts he's given most of these strikers , who were great at getting out of L1 but will struggle in the Ch.
But in reality he had no choice - he had to offer long contracts in order to get them.

The mere fact that , in his interview this week , CW is talking about getting 1 or 2 strikers , reveals to us that he KNOWS his present strikers won't cause any problems for Ch defences.

Beacuse that would make 8 (yes , eight !) strikers - more than even Colin had !

So my hope is that he does get 2 , who are better than what we've got , and he quietly manages to shift a couple.

Brooks not included above , but playing him as a striker might be an idea , if McCabe hasn't done his usual trick.

A 'Keen Blade' and you have already written Billy off after last season?

Get a grip, FFS!
