Statues

Tbh I always think these comments about not being here are over dramatic. We may well have been in the mire but plenty of bigger and smaller clubs have been in far worse predicaments and are still here. Many of them in better positions than ourselves.

I'd be inclined to agree actually. The club has at its worst points stagnated rather than been in mortal danger.
Although that twat Mike McDonald might have driven us to that point if he'd been there much longer.

I still maintain we offered to name the BL stand after JessicaEnnis when the council realised they didn't have a suitable venue / place to name after her. Don Valley stadium would have been ideal but six months after the 2012 Olympics the decision was made to pull it down.

Nothing to do with commercial gain from her success?

Maybe Paul Woolhouse too?

Why thank you! 'Perceptive' is one of the nicer adjectives that have been ascribed to my many musings :)

I should point out at this stage that my comment probably came across as being more acerbic than intended. In no way do I intend to denigrate Derek Dooley, who was by every account a thoroughly decent man, and of course served us well in his role at United.

But being a nice bloke who was on the clubs board for a bit doesn't warrant being immortalised in bronze. It's a slap in the face to the many figures in the clubs past who have served us in a far more tangible way.
The Dooley statue is clearly a concession to a man who is a prominent figure in the city of Sheffield itself, having being connected with the other lot.
But when it comes to putting up statues of people in the Bramall Lane car park I have no interest in those who represent "the city", I want to see somebody who represented Sheffield United exclusively. We already have a road named after him, a statue in our car park is inappropriate as far as I'm concerned.

I won't reel off a list of the great players or managers who should take its place as I don't want the thread to turn into a debate over their respective merits, and besides which, any one of them would be a preferable option.

So to summarise. I'm a "down".[

Agree totally with your sentiments.

I think a few others though, rather than denigrating DD, are just saying others would have been more appropriate.

No problem with that line of thought, but you can't just take it down based on retrospective comments from a minority fans who have no idea by the sounds of it what he did for the club. I don't recall any protests when it was erected.

Hinchcliffe? And the potential Daddy/Mommy of the lot.
Sam(antha) Hashimi.

Can we add the fake Count too, Colombotti. Well I say count, sounds similar but possibly lost in translation e.g I like a lass who shaves her count.

Which all tends to back up my argument in Dooley's favour. How the fuck did he manage to keep it all together in spite of that lot?

And he did a lot of that during a time of declining health when most of his family were begging him to retire and take it easy.

The board were debating selling Jags and Tonge in the summer of 2003. Dooley stood by Warnocks belief that these players could get us to the premier league and swayed the room against their sales.

Shane he didn't manage to persuade the board not to sell Brown as well.

The last time I checked there was one other statue at a ground in this country of someone who wasn't a player or a manager at the relevant club. Michael Jackson's statue at Fulham. Not exactly good company.

I'd like to see Hollywood make an epic film of The Battle of Bramall Lane.
And the Oscar for the best supporting actor goes to..................... Samuel L Jackson for his portrayal of Patrick Suffo in 'The Battle of Bramall Lane. I can see it now.

Brown had 6 months left on his contract and was playing like a tit. It was a case of selling him for what we could get (£0.5m if I remember) or sticking him in the reserves as he had made it clear he was on his way. The rest of your post is just a load of nonsense to back up your parochial attitude to this issue.

Dooley kept United afloat in the 70's & 80's on the commercial side. He was also a stabilising factor on the board in the 90's when the club was tearing itself apart. I think a few on here are doing him a disservice and it doesn't make for very pleasant reading.
And some are making him out to be a saint ..he was given the commercial role which involved selling the equivalent of scratch cards

Damn right I'm parochial. I don't believe he should have a statue in our car park as 100% of his playing and managerial accomplishments are for our bitter rivals.

Actually that's not fair. He also scored twice in two games for Lincoln but was quoted later as not enjoying that, in part because they played in red and white stripes and he was a Wednesdayite.

Anyway, it's not coming down, so parochialism will get me nowhere.

Suggestions for who plays Megson?
