Statues

There's nothing in the rule book that says statues have to be of players. We've got one of our famous players and one of our famous directors. The next one should be one of our famous fans. Shred.

Shred looking through the window of a Diamond travel coach window,it could be on the right of the steps as you walk up to the Kop from the John Street entrances, everyone could say alright Shred before every game

Excellent idea. Something for the club to consider when they redevelop the kop.

Maybe if it was put to the club, and paid for by fans subscribing ,I'm certain the money would be raised,I'm sure among our fan base there is somebody who could do the statue

That the pigs lay claim to Dooley is another myth emanating from that end of town. He played less than two seasons for them and got fired after two seasons as a not too successful manager. He's one of ours, fuck the pigs.

Yeh, he was a Wednesdayite as a kid (and I'm not sure that ever changed), played for them, set their season scoring record, managed them and worked at Hillsborough and his whole family are Wednesdayites. They've got no claim to him at all.

The dislike of The Dooley statue on here is childish and embarrassing.

It's embarrassing to have a statue of a person who never played or managed a single game for us and yet is an iconic figure amongst the fans of our bitterest rivals. That's what's embarrassing.

And I don't care what he did in the boardroom. This is a football club. We should honour our players and managers.

Spot on.

What's him and his family being Wednesdayites got to do with it. Same applies to Harry Maguire. Dooley would have fuck all to do with the pigs after his sacking in 1973.

Anyone attending Dereks funeral and listening to the eulogies of Warnock and Bassett would I hope understand just what he did for our club.
Would those advocating taking down his statue feel the same if he had spent some time at Reading or Stoke for example instead of the pigs.Part of his legendary status is because he came to us and devoted pretty much the rest of his life to us.

A possible way round the moving the statue situation is dedicate it to the people of Sheffield and resite it somewhere in the City Centre,in its place should be Jimmy Hagan or TC or other players from our history, maybe the lad who scored the winner in 1925,another possible suggestion is on the approach to the old Victoria Station overlooking the road named in his honour,

When I posted my thread on The Great Joe Shaw, the first to respond was TD with the very perceptive remark " At least there's one deserved statue in the car park " - one which I'm sure reflects the feelings of many , many Blades fans.

That being the case, is it not time that we petitioned the club to have it removed and replaced with one which is much more appropriate ? Such a petition could provide them with the perfect excuse for doing so, since next year marks the 50 th. Anniversary of the debut for the Blades of the man voted as being our Greatest Ever Player, the wonderful TC.

Obviously, there are any number of reasons why this should be the case and, if they resist, perhaps we could demand a Brexit style referendum amongst registered fans, with a simple ' Up or Down' replacing 'In or Out'.

I hope there's someone out there with the time and inclination ( and possibly influence ) to lead such a campaign and I'd be interested to hear what others think.

PS. Put me down for a down, so to speak.
Appreciate many of your sentiments, but I think it is a delicate and complex issue, as the other posters have already shown. Beware the dreaded referendum - if there's one thing we have found out recently, it is that one-word answers to a complex question create a mess. Just as different people understood different things in the Brexit referendum by 'out', 'down' would mean different things. If it meant dumping the Dooley statue at a tip, definitely not; if it meant a genuinely prominent spot in the city centre, for example, and the family agreed, then ok. I am happy to support further statues - a Hodgy leaping would suit me.

The managers should be strongly represented when it comes to Statues of commemoration in the car park . A huge one of Dave ' Harry ' Bassett just has to be erected sooner as opposed to later and then maybe a smaller one of John Harris at a later date

A quick edit : If Wilder goes on to emulate his hero Bassett in the managerial game , maybe he could have one erected holding aloft a trophy with the words D - E - S - S - O

Yes, I would feel the same.

Statues for players and managers only.

His many Wednesday connections only make it worse.

Fair do's if that's how you feel. I suggest the decision by the club was taken after huge consideration and in tribute to what they see as "game changing" contributions by the man. I suspect like many great people, their work goes largely unnoticed and unseen by the public. I am satisfied that without him we would probably never have seen the Prem and given what was going on in the boardroom for many years of his prescence,I can imagine we could well have seen a catastrophic meltdown.
Interesting debate.

I suspect the decision was taken with the same haste as the decision that brought us the Jessica Ennis Stand, but that's speculation on my part.

Never have seen the PL without Dooley? I find that very hard to believe.

Maybe the best idea would be to use the wall around the ground to put carved figures and faces like one of those south American temple's......

You might be surprised as to how vital he was in enabling our managers to sign and retain players.

I still maintain we offered to name the BL stand after JessicaEnnis when the council realised they didn't have a suitable venue / place to name after her. Don Valley stadium would have been ideal but six months after the 2012 Olympics the decision was made to pull it down.

Wasn't a post box on Fitzwilliam St near the City Hall painted gold and named after her?

I'd say that the much maligned Kevin McCabe is largely responsible for that. But I wouldn't give him a statue either.

He would probably get a sainthood, not a statue, seeing as he didn't take over until 1999.

Dooley kept United afloat in the 70's & 80's on the commercial side. He was also a stabilising factor on the board in the 90's when the club was tearing itself apart. I think a few on here are doing him a disservice and it doesn't make for very pleasant reading.

Agree totally with your sentiments.

I think a few others though, rather than denigrating DD, are just saying others would have been more appropriate.

And he did a lot of that during a time of declining health when most of his family were begging him to retire and take it easy.

The board were debating selling Jags and Tonge in the summer of 2003. Dooley stood by Warnocks belief that these players could get us to the premier league and swayed the room against their sales.

Tbh I always think these comments about not being here are over dramatic. We may well have been in the mire but plenty of bigger and smaller clubs have been in far worse predicaments and are still here. Many of them in better positions than ourselves.
