Gentlemen's agreements mean nothing in real life but they're still usually honoured in football. It's about trust.

I've agreed with a lot of what you've said on this thread but the statement above has more chance of being the other way round if anything, which if truth be known has no chance of being right either.

Billy is apparently upset that Ched has come in as he is used to being top dog in terms of goal scoring.
Billy also wants to remain top earner but his value to the team is not seen to be as big in the championship and we know we will have to bring in better players at subsequently more money to enable us to move forward.
Also v upset that cheds transfer was leaked before end of season as it took shine off the teams successful campaign but little or nothing we could do as the leak was from the chesterfield end, by a guy who in his position should know better.

Personally, I wouldn't give him anything more than a 2 year deal as I suspect (and hope) by the time he's 33 we will have outgrown him and he won't be good enough for us anymore.

I'm taking nothing away from his incredible contribution last season but that is done now, and we need to look forwards.

Players don't leak news about being unhappy with contracts, agents do it to get public unrest and put some leverage on the club.

Proper players play for the shirt and leave agents to work for the money, as that's their only playing field.

If the players really are bitching then we've probably lost their desire anyway.

I waste an hour reading it all and realise that I've seen it all before and it isn't a big deal, players get unhappy, it normally gets sorted or they leave, the club will carry on because no player is bigger than it..

Agreed, but it's reasonable to assume that our better ones like Fleck and Sharp are going to want to be earning championship wages. Whether we like it or not the board is going to have to stump up more money otherwise we will lose players.

Since when is £40/£50k a week a standard Championship wage?

The players you mention have played in the Premier League regular and international football.

Sharp has skirted around the Championship with limited success and Fleck has been a L1 player and no more. Lets not get hung up on the load of bollocks there was a gentlemans agreement of any sort. Football is a cut throat business with failure and success coming as quickly as each other.
If a professional player is stupid enough to potentially get a £5k/£10k increase in his weekly salary and only has a gentlemans agreement instead of in writing, then more full them and stop causing bollocks behind the scenes...

If Coutts is involved, he should be kissing our clubs arse for being given another chance last Summer to play for the club instead of being shipped off to Ross County on loan until his contract expired....
