Marquee signing is an American term. A marquee is what they call the thing on a theatre or cinema where they advertise the play/film and its stars.

Not that I want to come over all superior, but I believe that the original term was a "Marque signing" in the sense of a readily identifiable famous brand or in the case of a football signing a player who would be known and shown as being of "history or pedigree" such as, in the car world, Porsche, Ferrari etc. It has regrettably suffered the same fate as "of" for "have" and "get" for "have" and "pacifically" for "specifically" in recent years, but hey, that's English for you. Marque not Marquis or any other derivative please. It pisses me off.

Interesting. Its an explanation but it probably reinforces the point that uneducated journos didn't know what they were talking about and added an extra e because they couldn't pronounce nor understand the proper word that was originally meant. I never thought I'd miss the day when the Star was a completely print journal and its journalists were educated.

As I've said, I believe the term originated in the States. I hadn't heard the term at all until relatively recently and I've never heard the term marque signing.
