Championship v premiership

So not a meritocracy at all then if it's all about the money.

It's a system whereby the best footballing teams rise to the top by gaining points/ promotions etc. The team winning most 11 v 11 games will ascend. I'd certainly say that is a meritocracy of sorts.

The PL boasts a truly terrible line up of clubs.

The Championship is far more interesting.

So you'd be happy for us never to return to the Premier league then and stay in the Championship because "it's more interesting"? :(

It's time some of you lads stopped pretending. Actually, I think it's a bit of self-protection coming in. You want to pretend the Championship is a better league than the Premiership because you aren't confident we are good enough to make a push for the Premiership - right? What will you say when we get promoted to the Premiership then? "Oh dear, I wish we'd have stayed in the Championship because it's more interesting?". Come off it!

What I'd concede is that, because of the huge sums of money involved, the teams in the Prem are so desperate to hang on in there that they go out ultimately, not to lose, rather than win. And this can lead to some dull games. Whereas, perhaps, in the Championship it's a bit more open, traditional, cut and thrust, football. But you have to weigh that against seeing the very best footballers in the world, week in and week out, and the money and security and recognition that brings to our club.

There are dull and interesting games every week, in every division of the Football league. I don't think the Prem is any different in that respect. I'd rather worry about that when we get there than try and dismiss it as being not as interesting. Whichever league Sheff Utd is in is the ONLY interesting league to me.

Didn't say that whatsoever did I. You're jumping to a conclusion again.

The objective is to get to the top, the objective is to get the most success you can. How interesting the league is is secondary. But I do find the Championship considerably more interesting than the PL, on the whole, and probably will for the foreseeable future. But obviously the PL would become more interesting if we were in it.

I think your second paragraph rings true to an extent. Maybe there's an element of that for some fans. But being in the Championship is a far greater consolation than being in L1.

So in a race between an F1 car and a Nissan Micra, this would also be a meritocracy?

Between cars yes, not between drivers. The F1 car is better so would perform better. Chelsea are better than Wimbledon hence they are much higher placed in the league.

Because they are better resourced.

Yep. But as I say, that doesn't take away from the fact that the best teams rise to the top which was the relevant point of the discussion of Championship v Prem.

Yeah this has been a totally irrelevant distraction and well off topic. And you have a good point. I'll let it lie now. :)
