The season starts in six weeks. The preseason start is within a week or two. If we don't sort out the CB's soon then the following will apply when we get off to a shit start.

The guy's not match fit
The guy needed a good pre-season
The team needs more time to gel
The new guy and his family need time to settle in Sheffield
We need more cover at CB
etc

Please feel free to copy and paste whichever you deem applicable around September/October when you feel the need to backtrack.

It's interesting that we haven't really been linked with any CBs at all and it's the position most in need of strengthening. It's clear we are after Holmes and Leonard and there are plenty of rumours about players in other positions but virtually nothing on centre backs except EEL for obvious reasons.

I suspect it will be another 'under the radar' type signing that nobody saw coming.

we all underrate basham he is steadily improving and can certainly do it at championship level he was the best midfielder in the cup game against southampton 3 seasons back and we forget how solid he is, so much so we only remember his mistakes! not the other 45 games without them!

Actually it used to start in September - it is quite a recent phenomena that it moved to August - and even more recent to this early in August - I am sure Silent Blade will concur!

Sorry but don't score you get relegated pure and simple, Middlesbrough last season are a prime example.

Our Strikers

Sharp. Will do well if he gets 10-15 goals next season.

Clarke. Never done anything in the Championship in his long career.

Lavery. Didn't score loads for the pigs.
Their verdict while he was not bad nowhere prolific enough for the Championship.

Evan's. Again never done it in the Championship, also been out of the game for so long. It's going to be really tough for him.

Hanson. Simply not good enough for the Championship. Can see him going on loan in January.

Can't say I know anything about the guy mentioned above but do you honestly think the above strikers have enough goals in them ?

I agree we need Central defenders.

I don't know if we have enough goals in the squad. We could actually sign another 10 strikers and still ask the same question. Expensive strikers also cost lots in wages as we have seen with the piggies. No one knows how much our 2 owners have released in monetary terms either, it is pure speculation that we could or would pay £2-3 Million for one player so signing Hugill might be an actual none starter.

Point taken about Middlesboro, but that was the Prem. IMHO there isn't the remotest chance we will be relegated this season even with the strike force we have at present. Again, it's just an opinion, but with a couple of decent centre halves to compliment what we have and stop conceding a few silly goals, we should surprise a few people and teams this season.

I think Wilder will want someone who can play as a lone striker and I don't think we've really got one in the current squad. Hugill fits the bill.

We need more than one centre back as we've only got two, only one of who is likely to be starting. So if we need 6 strikers, by the same logic we need 6 centre backs. That's at least 4 more using the same logic.

Basham, Wright, O'Connell. Brayford can also play there at this level (if he stays). Wilder has said he wants one or 2 more centre halves and I'm certain that at least 1 will arrive before the season begins. Last season, Wilson, O Connell, Wright and Ebanks all signed in July or August. It's only June now. There's plenty of time and bringing in a forward doesn't make it any less likely IMO. It does mean that Hanson or Clarke (or both) will probably be moved on though.

Given that you don't get medals for spunkin' moneh, if this is happening somebody will be leaving I'd guess. Especially as Leonard and Holmes have offers pending on them and there will still be defenders coming in.

Not sure when was the last time we started the season in September. Think it was before WW2

Regarding Hugill, people are linking him to Wolves, again, not Blades. Either way, he is a good target man and does actually have a touch of pace about him. He couldn't finish a fucking biscuit though, his efforts on goal when he has more than a second to think about it are absolutely laughable. For all my moaning about him all season I wouldn't want us to sell him, to get someone in to do the job he does for us would be very tough and probably impossible to get someone for around the same price we paid for him.

Good luck with that. There are a handful of players like that in the world. They all cost a fortune and want to play in the Champions League.

That's a whole different world. If you can find a good support striker worth 10 goals and a few assists each season, sign him....quick.

I suppose the alternative on a lower scale is probably like a Glenn Murray, Dave Kitson in his peak, Darryl Murphy etc. That said, I still think those sorts of players are likely to be out of reach.

HMS and chief were used very differently. HMS was a regular in the team and our top scorer in our promotion season. Think he started more games than any other forward. Chief was almost exclusively used as an impact sub late on in games when we went more direct. I don't think Hanson can do the HMS role but I do think he could do the chief role.

Just looked up. All the football seasons started in September from when we entered the FL in 1892 until the 1919/20 seasons and from that season until 1947 we started our league campaign in the last Saturday of August. from 1947/48 to 1967/68 the FL started in the second last Saturday of August
