What year was it?

I remember the old houses in Asline Road. When were they demolished? My dad used to park his car there.
Picture caption says Oct 1938

As for the Asline Rd houses - good question. I used to go to my mate's house in the early 70s - he lived on Harrington Place, which was one of the streets that was demolished to make way for the park. At a guess, I'd say they were demolished about 1976.

Yes, mid 1970s would be about right. My dad would always insist on watching the 2.35pm race in Grandstand before setting off from our home in Dronfield and there would always be a place near these houses where he would park his car, often mounting it on a pavement in Asline Road or on a grassy area. Sometimes we would miss the kick off

Born in 1962. Went to Maud Maxfield school until I was 11 and then to Mary Hare (near Newbury) until I was 17. My sister (born 1966) went to Dronfield Junior, Gosforth and HFS

Din't realise just how big the old John Street were until I saw this pic. Bit too young to remember it standing...
It wasn't really though.

If you look at the Lane end it was quite low. It's surprising how much BDTBL has changed since we were kids.

I'd guess the seating area is about the same as the old stand/terracing but with the corporate on top to make it higher.

Used to stand just to the right of the tunnel as they came out during the 70s and 80s. Match days used to start off drinking at Handsworth, bus in to town, a few pints en route to BDTBL, in to town after, 52 to Darnall for a curry and then a stagger up the hill ready for footy on Sunday morning. Great times. Also distinctly remember watching the reserves midweek in the central league from the wooden seats in John Street Stand, there was always a few thousand for those games - or maybe my mind is playing beer tricks!

A measure of Cec Coldwell's character was shown in the 1962/63 season. Every season he was virtually ever-present, 'Cec Coldwell Played 42'.

Just want to say what great bloke Cec Caldwell was a true gent , when I was 14 playing for the Junior Blades I injured my knee after a heavy collision in first leg of cup semi final ending a 4-2 defeat on a pitch like a farmers field , our manager at the time contacted Cec through John Stubbs as Cec was the physio at the lane at the time and asked and asked a favour if in between treating pro's could fit in a 14 year who was desperate to play in the second leg of a semi final ( can you imagine this nowadays and what answer you'd get back ?? ) The long and short of it is that the that came back was yes .. I couldn't believe it .. time off school .. 4 physio sessions down at the shrine & saw a few of the people I worshipped on the pitch on a Saturday !! He was such a nice bloke , down to earth & made a young lads year never mind his day . He worked is magic hands & heat lamp and got me ship shape for the return match.
We won return match 1-0 but dipped 4-3 on aggregate see even the young blades suffer same effect as the seniors lol , but an experience and a thank you I'll never forget . Cheers Cec .

Still convinced in my mind that it was Thompson who broke Gil's leg. Don't think Hughes had made Blackpool's team in 66? Armfield possibly as he was the regular RB around that time but my memory still insists Thompson.

He was definitely playing. He signed for Liverpool same season.

Every match 1971, just to the left of Pagets sign, half way back

What memories..

I stood just the BL side of the tunnel towards the back just in front of the seats for every home game 71-77. There were some real crusty old gits in the seats behind me. They must have been about as old as I am now!

Bally sitting on the ball, TC sitting on the ball, Quality Goal, McAlister's broken leg, Woody volleying TC's corner into the net, I watched it all from there - and then back for a few more pints of Wards in the Grindstone. Was it really more than 40 years ago?

Magic Days then - but the Magic is Back
