Pyro or flare?

So is it cool to like flares and such or condemn them? Not sure if I like them or not without knowing.

And you my friend are an arsehole. Why the fuck are you bringing race into it, no-one in their right mind would advocate that.

So what should we be able to say that we can't? What could we say before that made things better? You're the one pining for the old days...

I'm in favour of pyro. The picture posted above with the pyro in the backdrop is rapidly becoming one of the most popular pictures of a supporter in my lifetime. One picture is painting so many words and expressing so many emotions. It really is an iconic photograph.

I saw someone earlier mention Hillsborough in 93(??) with Blades setting off flares. This modern day world of everyone being made of glass is pathetic. "What if someone has asthma?" - I'd like to think an asthmatic would have a inhaler as they could have a random attack at any point anyway - pyro or no pyro.

And is asthma just an English problem? Don't the Europeans have asthma? Has anyone seen the video from the Ajax/PSV game yesterday? THAT is an issue. Thick black smoke engulfing the top tier. It doesn't look good. The quick 10 second things we have are nothing compared to the continent.

As for the guy who has been banned, I doubt he phoned the club and said "it's me". He will have been dobbed in.

But some people get a rush from being a grass. Gives them a sense of achievement. Sad fuckers.

Bert is all for freedom of speech. But in your case he would make an exception.

You didn't have flares in the old days. Dragging out of context, selective items such a racism from the "old days" for comparison and as a means to insult a fellow poster is crass ignorance and arrogance on your part. Time for a nappy change son.

Whoever the grass is, if you are reading this, you are no blade. Never darken the stands of the Lane with your presence again please, people who throw their own under the bus deserve nothing. Fuck off far away you snake, before you get what you deserve.

Whereas the idiot who throws a flare into another stand and incites a riot is welcome back?

I can scarcely believe that anyone can say someone isn't a Blade for grassing. The behaviour of many fans of both sides that day was nothing short of disgraceful and if not wanting to be associated with it makes me less Bladey, I'll live with it. It was a warzone and we need to take steps to tackle an atmosphere that has, at times, become unsuitable for everyone but the minority.

.

Yes it is iconic but not really my cup of tea. Suppose it's an age thing. There's no mention of Blades or SUFC on that photo and if it's on social media (not that I know how that works) then other clubs will hijack it.

There'll be a campaign by some set of supporters making it look as though it was taken at Ipswich next weekend.

No. The point I'm trying to make is that there will always be something someone is going to get all indignant about. Football grounds are becoming more morgue-like in direct proportion to the things you're not allowed to do or say these days.

This was the quote. Bemoaning the atmosphere of a football ground because of the things you "can't say and do". Pretending now it's to do with people taking umbrage over criticism of players etc. is a pathetic lie. It was a generic harking back for the old days. When I point out that the old days included acceptance of such abhorrent acts of racist or homophobic chants, you get very defensive. For what it's worth, I'm not accusing you of being racist. I'm pointing out that the world has moved forward and that your nostalgia is entirely misplaced.

I've already explained to another poster that criticism of players and the team was my definition of things not being allowed to say. You're just digging a deeper hole for yourself and spouting more patronising rubbish like that above, the feeble attempt to put words into my mouth and a further attempt to convince yourself by misinterpreting what I really mean't to say is not going to advance your cause. An alternative point of view these days is that those who have subjects such as racism constantly at the forefront of their minds are perhaps the real racists. Look in the mirror before you take this thread any further.

Probably the most ignorant, self indulgent post I have ever had the misfortune to read on here.

Bloody hell, how many have you got on ignore??
Only one, and I've read some real shit over the years!

It's the complete non understanding of people with medical conditions that swung it for me.

If you're not well, tough shit, don't try and spoil our illegal fun. (paraphrased)

Is it my imagination, or is there more in fighting on here since we conquered all?

It's because, in this age of internet trolling, people say anything they want "electronically" because they can.

In the real "spoken" world this doesn't happen because they daren't.

You’re probably right. I can see that being the reason for some at least. Because there’s every reason to believe that the dickheads smuggling and lighting pyros are probably also the sort of dickheads who would turn violent when challenged about their behaviour. I can understand why some people might not be up for a physical confrontation with these people.

The particular poster who I quoted has riled me by escalating various annoyances being discussed in this thread into the insinuation that I would be OK with people reverting to prehistoric terrace racism. This is pathetic and he can do one as far as I am concerned.

I can assure you I won’t be “doing one” any time soon. You’re the one pining for the old days when chants were racist, hooliganism was rife and people got killed in stadiums. I’m not saying which one of those things you think made those days better. Just disagreeing with your assessment.

Please accept my sincere apology Nick . I've reread the thread and i feel compelled to alter my original comment . There are of course two fucking idiots on this thread , you and one other .

Racism and pyros in the same breath ? Don't be a pair of fucking idiots .

Ah the old argument of “in the same breath”. That’s an argument that has substance…..

Nobody is saying they are the same or even similar. The racism point came about as a response to someone complaining about what they are no longer allowed to say at football matches. Apart from criminalising and clamping down on things like racism, homophobia etc. what else could said poster have been referring to? How has “the things you can’t say” ruined the match day experience in any way? All it has done is prevent such appalling behaviour.

I wonder how many of the altruism promoters would prevent a flare being thrown first hand?

If there were as many as this thread suggests, the flare in question wouldn't have left the guys hand in the first place.

I think we need to act collectively to stamp out the idiocy before it does indeed cause harm to others

I wouldn’t recommend trying to tackle someone holding a burning flare. I would advocate reporting the idiot if you’re close enough to the action.

Most of my experiences haven’t been of seeing someone throw a flare. More hearing bangers going off or seeing smoke disperse but the deed has already been done by then and it’s not always apparent who the perpetrator was.

To be fair my inhaler comes in handy when a smoke bomb hits me on the back of the head.....

Fuck, yes.

I beg to differ. You don't have to look very far on here for at least one alarming example of a Blade badly hurt by a smoke canister (thrown by a Blade, into a crowd of Blades) quite recently--young son of a well-known member and regular poster to this forum, who I won't name because he's on the record as saying that he doesn't necessarily want to be in peoples' faces about it. I believe the summary version goes something like, "Child Carried Out of Oakwell on a Stretcher".

There was also the young autistic lad at Rochdale who was traumatised. Then there was the young girl injured in the derby all those years ago. The only way someone can continue to think it’s ok in light of all these examples is if they are incredibly stupid or just extremely selfish to the point that they just don’t care about the damage done.

Before this thread goes any further, can someone confirm whether the offending object was a flare or a smoke bomb. One is an incendiary device which can do substantial damage to people and property. The other errm, emits smoke. It's like comparing a nuclear bomb with a photo bomb. One is regularly confused with the other for some reason, mainly for sensationalism in my guess. A bit like bringing racism into the debate. I haven't seen any flares going off for about 15 years so someone please correct me if I am wrong.

The image doing the rounds in the star was of a man with a flare. Smoke bombs are more common but there has been the odd instance of flares recently. There’s one on the half time video doing the rounds from Saturday. I think smoke bombs, bangers and flares were all on display Saturday.
